Dealership paint and interior protection are a waste of your money (and I’ve worked in Dealerships for 35yrs) the car is not correctly prepared and is normally applied by someone that has little or no clue. A correct ceramic coating with cost £800 - £1500 depending on the amount of preparation required. Why do it any? ….. paint for many years has been water based, rather than the older oil based paints. Better for the environment, however not a durable. However you need to wash your car correctly and not take it to your local car wash. If you do you just wasted hundreds of pounds, as after a few washes (chemicals used) you have no protection.

As somebody who actually worked in dealerships for many years, and am also an ex-valeter and hobby detailer, I think I have enough experience to give a credible opinion. Trade quality ceramic coating products are better (longer lasting) than consumer quality. Dealerships charge you over & above the actual realistic cost of ANYTHING. The main upsells on new cars are mats, and you can always get the same quality as OE mats, from an OEM product, for half the price. Ceramic coatings are the same, you can buy trade quality ceramic coating products for half the price of dealership offerings, and it will be exactly the same quality. It's not a 'scam', as such, you are paying for a product that will be applied at the dealership, so it's convenience, rather than having to take it somewhere else. Also, this valeter talking about how easy it is to prep a new car for ceramic coatings, lol. If you could see the absolute state of some brand new cars that get delivered to dealerships, they do not arrive super shiny and perfect. Most of them have been sat at the docks for months, (just using Hyundai as an example as I worked for 4 years there), covered in birdshit, covered in jet fuel as the docks are under a flight path, and often covered in minor swirls from dust. The prep needed is hard work. The dock workers often use 1 car as a taxi, to transport 3 others up/down the dock to fetch cars all day, so 1 in 4 cars is usually muddy as hell inside, and the paint even more abused. A used car is often a lot cleaner and easier to prep, if the owner has kept the car clean constantly. And, no ceramic coating is perfect, many owners get their car ceramic coated then take it to the Eastern European hand car wash once a month, where it is covered in strong caustic TFR, and that eats away at the ceramic, causing it to be eroded a lot faster. Learn to wash and detail your car properly, yourself, and that will save you money and get you the best results. A good quality wax, can last 8-10 months, something like Fusso Coat Soft99, and is only £30 ish for a tub, and that will last you 5 years. That will be just as good in almost every way as a ceramic coat, and actually look shinier, and bead water better. One last point, you are trusting this valeter, who thinks the modern water-based paint is soft and as such the paintwork needs ceramic coating, to sell his OWN service and product (Diamond Brite is not a great product). Does this melon not understand that there is a solvent based CLEAR COAT on top of the paint, which is much harder, and that is where all of the swirls are sat in.

I highly appreciate your comment and your insight. I can actually concur wight he Hyundai remark, in fact my brand new Tucson had water marks/stains and had to return it to the dealership for them to get that fix nd they did. Afterwards, seeing the damage water does I decided to get ceramic coating for it and somehow I don't feel satisfied, supposedly I cannot get scuffs nor scratches off my car without removing or damaging the ceramic coating and it's basically the service provider telling me I need to get professional work, to actually paint the scratches and then do the ceramic coating again and... I feel like it's bs, there must be products that could use to get those removed or at least reduced without having to paint and whatnot.

In fairness, I think he was talking about how easy it is to prep a new car as delivered to the consumer - not as it was delivered to the dealership. If the dealer is any good - it will be delivered to the consumer in nearly ready to coat condition.

As a keen amateur who is obsessive about my vintage motorcycles but less so about a car which lives outside, I knew that the two part clearcoat is the hard, shiny surface you see. Lots of colour coats are actually matte when sprayed out of the gun and the clear imparts all the gloss. Yes, the colour may well be water based to reduce organic solvent effluent that the manufacturer has to cope with (else our water courses get it) so that clear is utterly vital.

Exactly, I have had some shocking cars delivered new (one had actually been rear ended, and the delivery guy was kind of like, yeah it happens, give it a polish and it should be ok - you could see the plastic of the bumper and zero paint🤦). The worst one I ever had though was an early Model 3. That had damage everywhere (wheels, bodywork, interior). In the end I took a chalk marker to it so their bodyshop could fix it all, there were even parts unpainted. I also took a paint depth meter to it and right at the bottom of both front wings, there was hardly any paint at all. It was about a third of the recommended depth. The later Model 3's were much better though, once they started coming out of China.

I’ve had two cars ceramic coated by trusted professional detailers and the gloss of the paint afterwards is fabulous, dirt is much easier to remove when washing and the effect remains for many years without the need for further regular protection like waxing. However it doesn’t protect against bird lime etching which was a major disappointment. The cost of treatment is considerable and my wife and I have both changed our cars in the last three months and have decided not to ceramic coat this time. The cars are washed regularly (not at a car wash) and applying a good quality wax two or three times a year isn’t for us onerous. I do agree that buying ceramic treatment when purchasing a new car at a dealership is to be avoided mainly because the people applying it will usually be untrained and the all important preparation poorly done, if at all. Dealers push this plus other products like GAP insurance, wheel and tyre damage cover etc because the profit margin for them is very high and the sales people will carry a target to sell them.
@kevinwhite8836
@kevinwhite8836 Ай бұрын
I had exactly the same with bird lime. It etched a bit like crazy paving. In the end, I had to wet sand it back, compound and polish, which obviously removed all of the ceramic coating, which was supposed to have protected it. Good thing about wax and semi-perm ceramic sprays, is that you can correct any issues and easily reapply a coat to the affected area if you need to. Full ceramic coatings have a much longer cure time and application process.

Hydrophobic qualities are the only similarity between a wax and a ceramic coating. Coatings offer a much higher level of gloss, last much longer and the protection they provide far exceeds that of a wax. If you go through an automatic car wash and the brushes induce minor scratches and swirls it will be in the clear coat with just a wax. Those same scratches and swirls are in the ceramic coating. In addition, you don't get the protection from etching from bug guts,bird bombs and water spots. With that said, a coating will be much more costly so there's a personal preference.

@@ModleskyAutoDetailing That is the furthest thing from the truth, stop spreading misinformation. When a car gets scratched with a coating, it does not happen to the coating only, that makes zero sense, its literally impossible as a coating is a few microns thick at most. A ceramic coating isnt some invisible shield against scratches or marring. Now PPF is something that will protect against scratches but not a coating. Also, some coatings are worst than wax or sealants with bird bombs or water spots meaning in a few hours that stuff will be etched in the paint regardless what protection you have on the paint, some you can wait a few days and be in the safe zone but eventually that stuff will etch in be it 2 hours or a week.

Watch other KZbinrs who are in negative equity and even their dealerships won't buy back the cars or part-ex them because they have too many unwanted EVs on their books. Electric vehicles are great for milkfloats and the like, but not for cars. Synthetic fuel should be the go-to technology until something better comes along. It can be used with petrol or diesel or on its own. We just need the mass production and infrastructure to make it viable. Don't buy EVs! They are the real scam.

I get far better results using Turtle wax Flex Wax , Hybrid ceramic wax or even their wax it wet ! The Flexwax holds up better and on.y use it every few washes . Keeps car looking great with a deep shine and dirt cleans off easily. And car even feels waxy. Any car that is detailed well and then protected with FlexWax or the Hybrid ceram wax fro TW will stay just as good looking at a fraction of the cost. But thats just my opinion.

All new cars use water based paints. The paint is protected by lacquer. Which nowadays protects cars from colour fading, especially red cars which use to fade because there was no lacquer protecting the paint. So when you ceramic coat a car, you are not coating the paint, you are coating the lacquer.

So much missing information. Just because your car is new does not mean it will be less work. That new car has been through a factory, a transport carrier or boat, transported on a car carrier, washed by a lot tech before you received it. There is plenty of contamination, swirls, hazing and marks on every vehicle. Like stated new paint is soft and very receptive to abrasions. When a professional applies a Professional coating, that car is decontaminated including Iron decontamination, clay bared, polished or corrected at the minimum, IPA wiped down then coated. My bottle of Professional Ceramic cost almost as much this service.

Absolutely agree. I have detailed all of my new cars and some of the paintwork was shocking new from factory. Often needs a bit of de-nibbing and all cars should be washed, clayed, compounded, polished and then IPA wiped before ceramic coating. Micro scratches will bug any perfectionist if you coat over them, as they become more visible.

Hi Lee. I have never heard .such a load of DO DAR in my life, water base paint is NO softer than solvent based paint.The factory applied lacquer is not water based only the basecoat and the primer surfacer are waterbased. All of which are baked at 220c apart from the plastic parts. The water based products only have a small amount of water in them to lower the emissions when the products are being applied [VOC's] Once the car is baked and has cooled to ambient temperature the water base product is as hard as solvent based product.

Ran into it in 2019 as an adjuster. I didn't like it. Thought it to be a gimmick to solve a problem that could already be solved with a higher quality clear or an extra coat of standard clear or both. I'm no longer a tech and glad I don't have to deal with it. Been out of the mix for awhile and ready to get back to it. If it's possible as an adjuster, I'd recommend Appearance Allowance and leave crap off or leave it to the owner to pay for the coating themselves. OEM and aftermarket urethane clears are really good nowadays.

Even if you did it yourself you are talking 150 quid just for the paintwork ceramics. I've a Range Rover that a client has for over 4 years and the ceramics still beading with no other top ups. Its all in the prep and application. I think DIY detailing is still easy to do yourself to an extent..but remember if you pay a decent company to do a superb job you are paying their labour, premises costs and experience. As others have noted a competent DIYer can get to 95% of a professional ceramic coating service - but you need to invest in a dual action polisher and watch a good few videos on how to use it to prep the paint. A 2 stage ceramic coating can then be applied (not the single coat DIY stuff). It helps to practice on an older car first and allow a couple of days to do the work..

It's a combination of things. One, paint is a lot thinner than it was years ago. So, brand new cars can suffer clear coat failure a lot quicker. Second, vehicles are expensive and they are depreciating assets so the less you maintain the faster they depreciate. Nobody wants to pay for a vehicle for 6 years and have it look like hell now that it's paid off. Third, profucts have significantly improved over the years. What is available now is significantly better than what was available years ago. I was a diehard Rain Dance user. No way I would pick Rain Dance over what is available today, especially because of ease of application and durability. Rain Dance would last a month or so. Carnauba wax doesn't last long either. Both made your vehicle look really good but why use them when the quality of the products available are so much better. My base price paint sealant on a detail lasts 9 to 12 months if the customer is maintaining the vehicle by washing periodically. A ceramic coating can last a year, 2 years, 5 years or longer depending on the specific coating. But, it depends on the individual. If I have a classic that I want to show off and also protect and have ease of maintenance I'm choosing ceramic coating. If course, PPF is the ultimate if you have $8,000+ to spend

In my experience, which is limited, car finishes are better than ever. If you’re willing to properly wash, dry, occasionally polish your finish, clay bar it every few years if you’ve an obsessive mind, it’s fine. It’s the clearcoat that protects your paint. And clearcoat is extremely hard and durable. I have found on the better makes, those clearcoats will last decades, even living outside 24/7. My wife’s Audi TT looked as good as new when we sold it aged 15 years. It was always a pleasure to detail her car. I will confess my MkIV Golfs x2 were nowhere near as good and became dull and resistant to polishing within half that time. Current RR Evoque looks closer to Audi than VW so far. I also find I don’t care as much as I used to and find a lot of people don’t either.

Good video as always , however all though almost all cars are now water based paint they are sprayed over with a lacquer to protect and enhance the finish and the lacquer is ‘ not ‘ water based it will be a solvent based 2k lacquer without this lacquer the water based paint would wash off in the car wash as it is water soluble.

If only people knew how easy is to ceramic coat a car. I DIYed mine with 0 experience. Watches a bunch of youtube videos, spent around 400 bucks worth of products + a polisher and did it myself in one day. Wash, decom, polish, coating. It's going strong for 2 years now. 400-500 bucks is 1/3 of what you'd be charged and you still learn a trade on the process that a LOT of people are willing to pay for. EDIT. 400 bucks I spent was in all products + a polisher. Just to be clear.

It's not that its waterbase paint but the application of clearcoat is far less than lets say upto 2014 non single stage paint( meaning for example they do 6 coats of clear before and now their doing 4 coats or less) is whats causing clear coat failure/ damage and compared with other brands it is much more significant with Japanese vehicles than North American or European Cars. Even the the headlights suffer uv damage prematurely hence i recommend applying clear film on headlights and taillights and this year i started offering not ceramic but flow coating for certain clients who wants to take their cars paint to the next level (which the car is color sanded and re cleared a few times enough to color sand and polish the car 3-4 times more than a regular car that came out of factory without going through the clear coat and also with just a little to no orange peel depending on the clients preference and a car show gloss level. This is guaranteed the life of the vehicle if properly maintained.

The joy of vehicle ownership for me is DIY cleaning. This is an easy job but probably 6-8 hours for a perfectionist on their own vehicle. I’ve had ceramic both DIY and professional (£800) but believe a 6 monthly quality polish is as good and enjoyable, with the correct preparation of course. Each to their own though and at £350 it’s worth a go if you’re time crunched 👍

The base coat is waterborne on some premium vehicles but the clearcoat is still solvent borne and the same as used on solvent borne base coat. Clearcoat is the outer layer so that’s the only layer that the environment interacts with. I’m amused by all the waterborne rationale.

It depends on the starting point. If there's scratches and swirls that need to be removed first it takes time to correct that, especially if it's over the entire vehicle. Then, you need to refine the paint to bring back the gloss because the cutting phase tends to dull it up. And it's not as easy as it sounds because you need to do a test panel first to see what kind of results you get from different pad and polish combinations before beginning. You can't just throw a pad on a polisher and put a few dots of just any compound and go at it because not all paint is the same. Some are harder than others. After the polishing stage you need to do a panel wipe to remove all the oils from the surface so it's completely clean for the coating. And, the application of a coating is different as well. Different coatings require different amounts of time before wiping off and then you need to check for high spots because if a high spot dries you have to use a machine to get it off and re-apply the coating in that area. And high spots look like hell. Some ceramic coatings require the use of heat lamps to cure them as well. And that takes time. In any case, if you find a good detailer who has been in operation for years and not just some weekend warrior who says it's easy and he can do it a lot cheaper you will get a combination of the best price and quality. I've corrected numerous mistakes made by weekend warrior types. Find a good detailer. You won't be sorry

@@chodkowski01 Yeah it's really fishy trusting any detail shops for anything at all. The marketing is just crazy behind ceramic/nano now, and there are guys selling this for woodworking/epoxy projects and general use. The coatings have some use cases, but the need to polish it off and reapply is simply impractical for most applications. For a dealer however, it's the perfect way to continue charging someone for a refresh, or maybe the ceramic even went away because you didn't maintain it properly. Lol, no thank you I also hear about them being applied incorrectly and having to fight with the shop to fix it.

Not really a scam is it? Unless they are using inferior sub-standard products. They are just charging more than smaller indie detailers. In saying that, I have had very mixed experiences with ceramic coatings and personally I wouldn't bother with the 'permanent' ones. I would instead opt for the semi-permanent sprays, which last anywhere from 3 to 12 months. They are much easier to apply, much cheaper and you can do remedial detailing (e.g. scratch removal) much easier and then simply re-apply.

He's a youtuber...he's being hyperbolic. The science behind ceramic coatings is sound. The 'scam' part is where dealerships will charge double or even triple the cost of what a full, standalone detailer would charge for the same product. My personal shop offers this service and the package includes everything one would need for a successful relationship with their coating which is everything from the wash stage to polish/correction and the coating itself. Heck, I even throw in the first maintenance wash, gratis and for a vehicle this size it's going to be 1250 USD whereas the local dealers here want anywhere from 2 to 4 grand JUST for the coating and on what amounts to a vehicle with flaws on the surface. Yup, they put it on right over the swirls.
