The thing that is really extraordinary about this promo was the speed that it was produced. I was at DIC...but was sent to Japan in late September...there was no talk of Ghostbusters happening at that point. I was working on lip-sync retakes for a few months...and came back after Christmas of 1985. That means that Kevin had to have boarded the promo sometime in October to be animated in November to come to the studio in early December to have music and be mixed. Considering that the show had not been discussed and had a completed promo that fast was a testament of how skilled Kevin, Eddie and the animators were at KK DIC. The funny thing was that I was there in the studio and country responsible for the animation...and I was so swamped with my duties at KK DIC...I don't remember watching the promo until I got back to the States.

What I love about the animation is that the Japanese studio nailed the tone and energy of the show- a surreal cartoony version of Manhattan- RIGHT FROM THE START. From the exaggerated expressions and body movement of the people on the street, the way the characters run, the way they react. Its not overly exaggerated like when it became Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters, but breaks enough of the real world rules like physics and logic to be funny and exciting.

The Real Ghostbusters is one of the few cartoons that my mom would watch with me on Saturday mornings. With the few others being X-Men The Animated Series, Reboot, Garfield and Friends, and Spider-Man. It’s a shame they haven’t made a new Real Ghostbusters series box set to include all the stuff. I have a memory of this promo running as a music video interstitial between movies on one of the premium cable movie channels - HBO?, Cinemax?, Showtime?, The Movie Channel? - many months before the series debuted on ABC. I remember not being sold on the idea of Ray riding atop Ecto-1, no matter how humorous the image, but liked the Japanese look of the cel shading in the animation. [It also makes sense that "Ragnarok and Roll" is also my favorite episode as that one is also very late seventies/early eighties anime in the vibe of its look and animation.]

@@cerealgeekTV I was hoping you would reveal another Real Ghostbusters mystery and it is who sings the theme song? Credited as John Smith but who is this John Smith? And most importantly does the actual recording of The Real Ghostbusters theme song exist?! I mean it had to have been remastered for the restored version of the promo? We know part of the vocal was heard during the closing credits of the 1989 Real Ghostbusters Halloween Special which aired in primetime in 1989. It was also used in the end credits for Slimer And The Real Ghostbusters season 3 only. Sadly the theme song wasn't even included on the soundtrack cassette released in 1986 with Tahiti which I was recently able to score a copy for myself not by any means cheap LOL!👻🚫📺📼

@@cerealgeekTV Where's my comment about the Real Ghostbusters theme and unmasking the real singer John Smith and if the actual theme song exists and can finally see a release? I have the mega rare 1986 cassette but the theme song wasn't on it, neither was the background score by Shuki Levy. Only the pop songs by Tahiti. Ray Parker Jr. played guitar on two of the tracks. And the master tapes for the O.G series are lost so only the promo pilot has been remastered because they found the master reel of it! Sadly not the official series.👻🚫🎸📼

That's happened to a lot of stuff. Purportedly, that happened to one of the Firebirds used on Knight Rider. There was a hard top* that was used as a stunt vehicle starting in late 82. The car was used throughout the series. Because it was bought off a dealer, the studio owned it outright. When the series ended, there were photos of it on the lot, and it apparently was used a bit. Most of the pictures were taken next to the train derailment vehicles, until they got carted off. The car was last seen in...1989, 1990, I think, then vanished. No one knows what happened to it. Thankfully for Knight Rider fans, five of them still exist. *Yes, I'm aware KITT and his maniacal sibling were both T Tops, but they did have a couple of hardtops used for stunt work. One of them got bashed up in "Knight of the Juggernaut." One other was converted to T Tops and was put on tour and became a display car for a while. And two were turned into convertibles.

I'm only six minutes in, this is really cool so far. I just wanted to say that I personally saw the promo air at least twice on HBO. The first time, I was so gobsmacked, I froze in place standing in front of the TV trying to memorize every detail. The second time I caught it was unfortunately much closer to the end, BUT I had a tape loaded in the VCR and managed to bag from there to the end. Unfortunately, I lost a few frames of the very end due to VHS backroll the next time I wanted to record something onto that tape. I went looking for it a few years ago and was heartbroken to discover that I'd taped over it-- or so I thought for a few minutes because I had recorded the same music video onto that tape twice and had forgotten there were two. Thankfully I kept skimming the tape just in case, and found it after the second copy of the video. (In case you're curious, it was the Peter Gunn theme by the Art of Noise. A VERY interesting story regarding the promo. I (and I'm sure many others) never knew about how that promo got around the way it did, but fortunately fans of the show like yourself got to see and preserve it with one even managing to randomly get the 35mm film print of it, that was a major lottery-esque win for the fans, that's for sure, I'm glad Sony decided Robert should be acknowledged for his hard work. This coming from a company that has a pretty up and down relationship with it's animated shows, but hopefully is getting better. (Looniversal take notes). Pity though that the studio(s) involved were uncredited for the production of the pilot, but they did an awesome job bringing the jump suited paranormal investigators to life. :) Another fantastic episode sir. @@521Maxx - Oh no...animation art collectors like myself have managed to unearth much material from the cartoon - I used to go to the Filmation warehouse in Los Angeles...in that warehouse owned by a company called Sunday Funnies, they also acquired all of the episodes of The Real Ghostbuters...so the cels, animation art materials, etc., were all still VERY much present! :)

Wish I had connections like that. Or maybe not. Look at egons hair, notice anthing? Then look at your kenner figure hair. The figures arent based off the cartoon. The figures are designed off the pilot. Packs and all. But that being said. There were even earlier kenner pack design. No one watches my vids so ill throw some info here lol. I did a few vids on the kenner ecto 1 and pke prototypes which ecto looked more cartoon accurate with spot lights etc. Etc. And yep. That's my bud bobby lol

Wow, that's awesome. I had no idea this promo existed - and I watched this cartoon religiously as a kid. The animation always was pretty amazing. It's too bad the "Extreme" series that came after wasn't nearly as good. I couldn't ever get into that one, but maybe I was too old by then, I don't know. Thanks for sharing this - I always love hearing "found footage" stories, especially ones that go to the next level of being remastered. It's in the right hands. :)
