as a pediatrician I gotta say you nailed it. We usually summarize CP children as “the child lives, but never recovers”

Well that's a depressing way of putting it. I hope you don't say that to parents when you diagnose their kids.

@@able2Bdifferent Sorry about that. It’s only for students, not for parents. Personally I never talk to parents that way, rather I tend to explain the pathology of their child’s illness in a simple way that they would understand.

I am beginning to get concerned my son has CP. He was born prematurely, he had a low birth weight, we had a traumatic birth also as he was breech, they tried for a natural birth but was stuck, his oxygen dropped and heart rate and had to have an emergency c section, he was in intensive care for two weeks. He had a bleed on the brain also, albeit small. He is 8 months old tomorrow and can't sit up, barely reaching for toys, still struggles on his front lifting his head up and is very jerky in his movements. He has regular physio, he has a paediatric appointment but not for 2 months. I really hope he doesn't have it.

A cure is absolutely necessary for this condition.. Is it possible?
@shannondominguez9725
@shannondominguez9725 2 жыл бұрын
There’s currently no cure for CP but maybe one day there will be there’s a ton of research being done on it. Living with it though is also possible although each individual is different so therefore our challenges can be different as well a task I can do may not be as easy for another person with CP it just depends on how mild/severe it is,in some cases the brain damage is so extensive that the person has little to no speech or needs full time care from those around them.

If this is what medical students learn about CP, I guess I know why doctors are all terrible. First of all, CP doesn't mean you can't move your limbs, it means the ability to move your limbs is impaired. Second of all, you don't even discuss what the clinical symptoms of hypertonia/spasticity and athetosis are, what the practitioner is going to see on clinical exam. Third of all, you completely leave out ataxic CP. Fourth, diplegia has long been recognized as where the legs are MORE impacted than the arms, not necessary that the arms are not impacted (and there's been some discussion about the usefulness of diplegia as a term in general). Fifth, since when is microcephaly a part of CP? Sixth, IQ tests are outdated, racist, ableist measurements of intelligence that are often even more inaccurate when it comes to measuring intelligence in people with CP because the tests often depend on fine motor manipulation and/or speech. And finally, though CP is technically non progressive, in that the brain does not become more injured over time, the wear and tear on the body is cumulative and many, if not most, people with CP, will experience a decline in function as they age.

The reason we watch the videos is to get a summary. It's a 5 minute review not lecture. So stop attacking and go find the lecture.
