I've always recommended that if you wish to try out Gel printing you should start with 5x7 gel plate, my preferred brand is #GelPress.
In a recent comment a lovely subscriber requested that I show how to get started, this is a video I should have made a long time ago, thank you for the reminder.

Oh Ceri, Ceri, Ceri, I'm having tears in two ways. 1. You have saved my gel press. I have 6 of them and I have two that I saw have exactly what you said would happen if you do not store them correctly. So I cried for them because as you know that they are not cheap to replace. But you mentioned that the little marks will eventual go away. Now the second reason for teas, these are happy tears because you have now saved my other 4 gel plates from getting ruined . Oh my friend I am so glad that you made this video, this was the best thing that you could have done for all of us. No one goes into such detail in explaining all this useful information that we need to have. You are a Gem, can't thank you ever so much for your help and doing this for all of us new Gel plate users. Your friend , Naomi

Thank you Naomi, there’s no guarantee the marks on your plates will go but over time they may diminish.

@@CeriGriffiths You said not to use a heat tool because the plate will melt. Couldn't you use that to melt out the blemishes? If a plate would be ruined anyway then you could take the risk, couldn't you? Or did I make a mistake in my thinking?

I am pretty much a gel plate printing newbie. I freaked out watching this truly excellent video because of course I was storing my two precious gel plates incorrectly. Ahhhh! I ran to remedy the situation and check on the plates. They look pretty good, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the damage isn't irrevocable. Thank you for being such a wonderful and charming teacher. 😀🇨🇦

Ceri, Hello from Jayton, Texas. I just wanted you to know what an inspiration you are. I have had scrapbooking supplies for years and have only used them a couple of times because I didn't know all the things that could be done with them. I now have my gel pads and can't wait to get started. Your teaching method is exactly what people need to get inspired. I love the way you explain things and demonstrate different methods. I am a retired high school teacher, and at 73 I've been to and seen a lot of instructors, you are amazing don't ever change. Love your videos ❤

I made gel plates during the pandemic as children weren’t allowed to share resources, so this way I was able to let each child have their own (12 children as just key workers children were in school) … they LOVED printing and turned their prints into collage houses. The home made gel plates did the job, and lasted 3 years being used by the children and re-melted when needed. However, I still prefer the bought gel plates as they produce better prints of leaves and feathers. The home made ones took marks very easily, but were good enough for what we needed at the time.

I have played with my 5 X 7 gel plate exactly once and had a wonderful time. I am in Arizona and found my paint drying very quickly so I bought an extender that helped it not dry so fast. But, I ended up using way too much paint. So I bought another plate so that I could brayer the extra paint onto it. Seems like that should work. Haven't played again, but really want to. Got both of them at Hobby Lobby for $9.00 with a coupon. When Hobby Lobby was clearing them out, I got an 8 X 10 really cheap. So lucky! But now I have to go check on them to make sure I didn't do any of your no-no's. Thanks for the video. We all needed to hear and see it. By the way, diluted Murphy's Oil Soap will make your brayer and its plastic holder look like new. No scraping needed. Oh, also, thanks for the shower curtain idea! ❤

Thank you so much for starting straight from the package. Quite a few videos claim to be "the basics" and, while they were awesome and informative, they weren't for someone who barely knows what a gel plate is or how to use and care for it. I can read about stuff until I'm blue in the face, but until I see it done or do it myself, nothing sinks in and gets remembered. Your demonstration has shown me a few things I've done that I shouldn't have and has helped me improve a few things that has made playing with my gel plates a lot more fun and exciting. I also appreciate seeing the smaller size plate since my craft area doesn't have room for anything bigger than 5 x 7. You are the best, Ceri, keep doing what you do and by-the way......I LOVED your Alaska trip videos as well. It was kinda like being there with you.

You are a wonderful instructor. I've had a gel plate for a while and I really wish I had had this information when I started. I've wasted a lot of paint and feel lucky I haven't "injured" my plate! I have a 5x7 but I have kept the acrylic plates on it. I will definitely pull those off and use them for holding and transporting. I had watched enough videos to know to keep it in the clam shell. Some other things I knew to do or not do but I always remember better when I know the why and I am always more successful when I know the reasons behind the why to do it a certain way. Thanks for sharing from an "intermediate" user! ❤❤❤

Thank you so very much for this basic walk-through on gelli plates. It was exactly what I needed. Yes, there are many gelli artists out there. HOWEVER, information delivery style is extremely important to many of us and often we just want to know what to do in the simplest terms so we CAN play. You afford us that with your sensible information delivery style (you keep saying you are not a "teacher" which makes me chuckle). I have made a separate playlist of specific art videos, this is in there. Once deep winter arrives post holidays here in Minnesota, I can re-watch and give it a go. Thank you again for this great information delivered with Ceri-the-Crafter style. 😊

I've made gel plates. You have to store them in the fridge, and you have to throw them in the trash after a few weeks, because they do grow mold in time. I don't enjoy the mess and fuss. Buy one. In the long run, the initial expense will offset the cost of continually remaking them. I've never been happy with my prints, so I feel that starting from the beginning will be helpful.

That was so helpful Ceri, whilst I'd say I'm an experienced watcher I'm not an experienced do-er. I was wondering how do you know how long to rub the paper for, I feel like it's a bit of a silly question but as I'm not sure I thought I'd ask, thanks again for such a helpful demo.

That’s a good question, sadly I can’t answer that with a finite time, it’s a little like stamping in that you need to give it enough time for the ink to absorb a little into the paper, the paint needs to adhere to the surface of the paper when printing.

Thank you -a packed tutorial! I am no longer worried that I didn’t keep the protective acetate, understand image transfer, got my head round layering repeatedly on paper v. monoprinting, & learnt about paint types. Loved the first effect - blooming/crazing - with high flow on your new plate. Will that only happen when the plate is new? Thanks Ceri 🙏
@CeriGriffiths
@CeriGriffiths 11 ай бұрын
Helen, the blooming effect will happen when you’ve got a clean plate and high flow or liquid paint, it will always be a bit hit and miss however I do know some artists who rub a little mineral oil into the surface of their plate then wipe off any excess in the hope of creating blooming.

Thank you for this beginner information. Much appreciated. How do you take care of your speedball soft brayers?
@CeriGriffiths
@CeriGriffiths 11 ай бұрын
As mentioned I wipe them down at the end of a session then I lay them down in my gel printing basket, I make sure they are laying on their back so that the roller doesn’t stick to any surface.

Hi from Australia, Ceri .. Thanks for your awesome intro video! My question relates to the baren. Is there any reason I couldn’t use an old iron (cold of course)? Thank you so much, Best wishes 😊

Good question, I believe you could use anything thats smooth and easily moved around on your gel plate without damaging it.

Just curious, can you put a brayer in the dishwasher?? I may or may not be a Lil lazy at times and always looking to work smarter not harder to have more time for what I wanna do. Now I do LOVE using magazine paper or junk mail for gel printing which works out great for collage and it's free basically. Even envelopes and the postcards that have ads on them.

Amanda I’m not sure about the dishwasher as I’ve never owned one, the brayer may be okay but I worry more about what the paint would do to your machine.

Ceri, as you know I love your videos. However, I have a problem. I can't find anyone who sells your storage containers here in the US. I finally found out that they are Weston boxes, but I can't find them here. Can you help. I tried to order them from Weston but they wanted to charge me 170.00 for shipping. Do you know of any store that sells them in the US or Canada?? Thank you so much ❤ God bless from Jayton, Texas.

Wow that’s highly expensive. Maybe search for scrapbook storage boxes as I’m sure there’s got to be an American equivalent. If they can store 12x12 papers and have a flat base they will work.

So I put a piece of paper on my brand new gel plate and 2 Days Later the whole page was filled with the oil so I decided not to do that not knowing it was okay to do. If I decide to use the paper again will it be okay for the gel plate
@CeriGriffiths
@CeriGriffiths Ай бұрын
It should be, all gel plates have a small percentage of mineral oil on their surface, it’s one of the components that aides the release of the paper, when you have a brand new plate it will have been freshly conditioned and some of the oils will leach into paper. Using the same paper just means it won’t leach out any more oil.

@@CeriGriffiths so it's okay to continue to use copy paper? Not to worry about the oil?

I used my gel press for the first time a few days ago and the paint got stuck on the gelpress. I didn’t come off with paper, lifting with paints, wetwipe or even water and soap and a soft sponge (even hurt my plate ) . I feel so destroyed from my first attempt and now my plate looks so horrible. I used a heavy body acrylic paint, a thicker one as the first paint on the new gel press and that is the one I cannot get up and away now. . My plate looks like it has been painted. Tried afterwards to clean again, the paint is there stuck. What do I do now? I am so upset about the state my plate is in now, it is not stained, it is full of dried paint I cannot get off
@CeriGriffiths
@CeriGriffiths Ай бұрын
Don’t worry, if all you’ve used acrylic paint it will come off, if you have a roll of clear packing tape then lay a strip of that over the paint, rub it with your finger tips and then peel it off you will lift the paint. It might take a few pieces of tape if your layer of paint is thick. This works with manufactured gel plates I’m not sure it would work with a home made plate.

@@CeriGriffiths thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It worked! So relieved. Asked the manufacturer (Speedball) too and they said to use gel hand sanitizer but I was scared to do that. But I used the tape now and got of most of it and then conditioned it. I thought that maybe it was dry or something from start, who knows how long it has been laying on the shelf in the store (smaller local one)… hoping next time will be easier. I think I got one nice print I love even though it was a bit of a cumbersome start.

@@CeriGriffiths I followed your advice and used a smaller plate today and just used paint and started easy. It worked so well and was so much fun! yey! I can see myself loving this. I think the other day was partially also a bad day weather wise, we had 30+ celcius and the paint just dried in seconds. I can´t partake in challenges because i do things according to my illness, when it allows me to, but I actually made a simple card today inspired by your challenge. Thank you for all the advice and inspiration!
