Cervino 4478 m, Hervé Barmasse - Linea Continua (ENG subtitles) ( The Matterhorn)

Hervé Barmasse, alpinista ed esploratore, apre con il padre una nuova via sul Cervino.
Quattro generazioni un solo “intento”: andar per monti alla ricerca dell’avventura, del nuovo! Questa è la famiglia Barmasse di Valtournenche; montanari, alpinisti, esploratori e guide alpine del Cervino. Ed è proprio sulla “Gran Becca” - così viene chiamato il Cervino dai Valdostani - che il 17 Marzo 2010, a distanza di una generazione, padre e figlio si legano assieme per cercare di salire quel Couloir che, dall’Enjambée, precipita per 1200 m verso la base della parete Sud del Cervino. Un vecchio progetto tentato 24 anni prima dal padre Marco ed oggi ripreso dal figlio Hervé. Una via difficile, definita dai più forti alpinisti degli anni 80 come “uno degli ultimi grandi progetti logici delle alpi”, e ancora irrisolta nel 2010.

“Ho rivisto il muro che mi aveva sbarrato la strada 24 anni fa. C’erano anche un friend e un chiodo da ghiaccio del tentativo degli svizzeri: il passaggio era molto impegnativo ma Hervé, caparbio e risoluto, dopo alcuni tentativi è riuscito a passare…”

“Finivamo sempre con il parlare del Cervino che per noi “Barmasse” rappresenta molto più che una semplice montagna. Di lui sono state dette e scritte un’infinità di parole; io posso solo dire che questa montagna è dentro il mio cuore e credo che anche per mio padre sia la stessa cosa, d’altronde da qualcuno avrò pur preso!”.

Four generations, one sole purpose: going to the mountains in search of adventure, again and again! This is the Barmasse family of Valtournenche: mountaineers, alpinists, explorers and mountain guides on Matterhorn. It was on this very “Gran Becca”, as the Val D’Aostans call Cervino, that on the 17th of March, 2010 spanning 2 generations, father and son tied in together. Their aim was to climb that Couloir, which, from Enjambée, plunges for 1200 meters towards the base of the South Face of Matterhorn. An old project, attempted 24 years prior by Marco’s father, taken up on this day by Marco and his son, Hervé. A difficult route, defined by some of the greatest alpinists of the 1980s as “one of the last logical projects in the Alps,” it still remained incomplete in 2010.

“Once again I saw the wall that had barred my way 24 years ago. There was also a Friend and ice screw left behind from the Swiss attempt. Hervé managed to climb, slowly, without ever missing a step, and so we reached the exit at around 8.15 p.m. That was it: we were on the Normal Italian Route at the Enjambée, nearly home! In the Couloir the immense south face of the Matterhorn towers over you, almost crushing you…”

“Whenever we met up, at a family meal or just for a coffee, the “ Couloir” was often the main topic of conversation. We always ended up talking about the Matterhorn which for us Barmasses represents much more than a mere mountain. So many things have been said and written about it; I can only say that this mountain is in my heart and each time I stop to look at it I can only daydream. I think my father feels the same..”
