For our pets, the Fourth of July holiday may not be as fun as it is for their human companions. During this time it can be stressful and traumatic, so Cesar shares his annual dog tips on how to prepare for the festivities. Creating a safe environment is key, but what are the key steps to take before the big shows?
Each year there is a massive rise in lost pets around the holiday including veterinarians fielding calls from worried pet owners. As challenging as this can be for pet owners, it is crucial to be proactive in understanding how animals naturally react so you can help them stay safe. Cesar explains a few important tips and shows examples with his pack on what you can do at home.
Preparation for the holiday is key for a smooth weekend. For those that might not be celebrating as the holiday is celebrated in the U.S.; you too can practice these tips at home for your local holidays throughout the year or special events that may include fireworks, loud sounds, and more.

Extra exercise and mental stimulation not just the day itself but several days in advance. Not fun for us this year it’s in the nineties for the next ten days here. Limit to parts of the day to be out. Miss the snowy cold part of year. Five miles of walking and outdoor mental games is doable in thirty degrees and lower and pleasant.

The day before the 4th last year the plumber was installing a faucet. Our street went to life with fireworks. Our Chihuahua mix squeezed into the cupboard under the sink with him 😇 He had a deep voice and loved dogs so she calmed down. He allowed her to stay with him while he worked. That was wonderful ♥️

@@cynthiahernandez4439 try anchoring fire with positive experiences like praise, food, music he likes, toys, etc... first from afar and moving away from the fire before he gets anxious... increase proximity gradually and maintain your calm state at all times, don't push him, don't get frustrated...

One year i went for a walk with my 1,5 year old dog, boom a big fire bomb in 2feet away from us. I did exactly what Cesar did, noises from KZbin and playing with good treats. Inside was not a problem but he was very scared outside for a month or so, after that never again scared of fireworks, luckely! Only even now on a evening walk when there is a hard sound he freezes, i keep my calm, walk along and he follows. He’s 4 years now and scared for little feathers that stick to his nose😂 but not for fireworks

There’s not too many dog trainers that I will listen too...you Cesar trained me to help me pit. But it’s sad to say that my Romeo passed away 2 mo ago. (RIP) he was a blue like Jr. I rescued him five years ago. He was five when we rescued him and through your training I was able to have a well-balanced dog. It’s still too soon to have another but when I do you will be the first person I go to, to continue to train me as I lead my future dog. Thank you Cesar.

Already on top of it Cesar. I watched your older prep videos and have working on all of the tips. My dog is exactly like the Chihuahua in this video. No barking, but she's scared of any type of louder noise. The thundershirt works surprisingly well, as does exercise, and in worst case scenario her vet prescribed her anxiety medicine for the week or the 4th. She been getting extra long walk all week and the thundershirt has been enough to keep her calm.

This is our first 4th with our rescued Pomski. I don't have a week, only 2 days. Tomorrow and the following day, we will go for long walks. I can simulate the sound, and have liver treats. She has a few pandemic pounds so, I have reduced her food, and cut down on the treats. Hopefully, this will help with the focus part of the training. With only 2 days my goal is just to introduce it, and see how she handles it. Because there is no fireworks near us, people will set off their own fireworks. We do movie night with our surround sound. So the TV that they are so used to is the loudest and closest sound they deal with along with extra cuddles on the floors. I found that not reacting my self to the fireworks helped teach them that it was no big deal. For my Danes 4th year of 4th of July she was out and asleep before they started and slept right through them lol

I had both sides of this, my dog Gus was terrified of fireworks and storms the dogs that came after him didn't care about them much at all. They would even go outside and sit and watch the next door neighbors light off some pretty big stuff. They would get irritated by them after the month or so simply because they woke them up. It was so nice to have dogs that weren't terrified for 4-6 weeks every year.

I live in Balsall Heath, B/Ham UK & the fireworks go off all year round. It's a nightmare for my American Bulldog who has to endure this. I rescued him as a 2yr old from smack dealers who had him tied up in a garden constantly. He goes into severe trembling that can last a few hours after the last of explosions it's awful to see. I'll definitely be applying tips I've seen here. Fingers crossed . .

My dogs love the fireworks almost ass much as I do. Lol. For us in Romania it is on new year's eve. My German shepherd is top for that... he absolutely loves it. I also have a Jack Russell terrier and cocker spaniel and they love it too.

Thank you lots for the advice. I feel it is so true. Important for us to care enough to actually prepare our pet family for such situations. Funnily enough, for me as a human it works same way. I have a strong reaction to loud sounds and repetetive sounds as such - I can't stop focusing on them. But when I was on vacation, I was walking an enormous amount throughout the city and got really drained. Despite having a room near a crowded, very loud street with cars and trams right under my windows until 1am, I went to bed and passed right out :D

I 💜the way he says thunder😊 I am a dog walker so my dog gets over an hour walk a day. Last year I walked her for 2.5 plus hours and it didn’t really help. She’s a nervous chihuahua so maybe that’s part of it. Used cbd too. This year I got drugs from the vet because I hate seeing her hide under the bed for 8 hours scared for her life shaking like a 🍁 She’s sacred when there is a fly in the house!!!

After 9 years at the shelter, I have never seen a dog show fear from storms or fireworks. They might react, bark or get startled, but never have I seen a dog hiding and shaking in a corner over storms... but in homes it pretty common.

I have always ignored the lightening etc and my dogs have followed my reaction as they trust my pack leadership and so remain calm. Most of my folks have been rescued and some very nervous at first, but all have reacted to my reactions re fireworks etc.

as much as i appreciate ur advice. we double walk our dog but our city/neighborhood is horrible with loud bombs fireworks. not the light ones. and it goes from April-Oct. day and night. this won’t work. all my dogs had to be medicated to the extreme.
