Cesar, I have tried you technique of doing master copies from the museum and may I ask you a few questions that have come up when i try? One question i have is do you consider if the color on the painting in the museum has faded and do you compensate for this or do you match the color exactly as you see, even if it may be discolored or faded by time? My second question is what role if any does photography play in this process? Do you take reference photos for use back at the studio and if so how do you use that to inform your copy? Thank you for sharing this process. Copying from painters I like has been one of the most rewarding things I've done and I hope to continue to learn and build my skill.. thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

I love the colors on the actual paintings now. They look pretty well conserved. I rather have those harmonies than anything I see done now with fresh pigments. Lol I do take photos but write lots of notes about the difference between the photo and the real. In the studio I try not to look at photos to not forget the visual effect I felt from life. But I do use it for proportions.

You say you have to offset the verdaccio by layering different value ranges of terra Rosa over top. Does just a terra Rosa glaze over the green naturally result in a skin like color or are you also adding some yellows into the terra Rosa glazes?

Are you trying to replicate the colors exactly or are you moving on a little more freely?
@jorllima
@jorllima 2 жыл бұрын
Great work Cesar with your oil paints, but you know that the original technique was the egg tempera, which is hard as hell to replicate and match the colors since they turn lighter when they dry. Since you got pigments, you could try to work in that technique, it's tedious but funny. Regards!

Say it louder. I am so tired of seeing people do "master copies" without following the master's technique and method. Like, I've seriously seen people copy Sargent portraits starting from the details and working with small brushes, funny enough they even detail what in the original is thick impasto with very thin paint
@bodeaalex1142
@bodeaalex1142 2 жыл бұрын
@@saint_gales I paint in egg tempera and in my opinion he did a good job in emulating the medium. He kept the brush strokes small, one at a time, like in tempera. I think he wanted to render the atmospheric feel of tempera and he did that quite well.
@jorllima
@jorllima 2 жыл бұрын
@@saint_gales well, I would say that he did a "studio" of Fra Angelico work rather than a "master copy". He tried to emulate the atmosphere and colors, but without the egg tempera technique, it is imposible to achieve the texture and patterns of that technique. I wouldn't blame him, he is just trying to develope his skills in oil technique rather than doing an exact copy. Regards
@sketchartist1964
@sketchartist1964 2 жыл бұрын
@@saint_gales Yea, I notice many painters who have been trained in the modern academic style, tend to use tiny brushes to fill large areas of a canvas. I don't get why they do it but they do get good results. I prefer using larger brushes and I strongly suspect painters like Sargent and Bouguereau both used the typical sizes and kinds of bristle brushes still sold in stores today: filberts, flats, round, etc. At least that's what it looks like when you consult old photos of them at work.
