00:18 - Building up from the back
01:32 - Full-backs
02:31 - Midfielders
04:44 - Wingers and strikers
After 20 years as a player at the top end of the game, Cesc Fàbregas made his first steps into coaching at Italian side Como. Having led youth and reserve teams for the Serie B side, the former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea star made the step up to interim head coach in November 2023.
As a player, Fàbregas worked under some of the most prominent coaches in the game, including Arsène Wenger, Pep Guardiola, José Mourinho, Vicente del Bosque and Antonio Conte.
In this exclusive Masterclass with The Coaches’ Voice, filmed in May 2023, he gives us an insight into how he wants his teams to build up from the back to create attacks. Using a 4-2-2-2 system, Fàbregas runs through the roles and responsibilities for players in each position, reveals the obsession for playing forwards that he inherited from Wenger, and explains why he sees the midfield as key to the game.
It’s a brilliant insight into the philosophy of an exciting young coach, who will now be putting his learning to the test on the grass. We hope you enjoy it.

After seeing what Xabi Alonso is doing at Leverkusen, i can see Cesc having a similar path. Both were players that had great vision and were always 5 steps ahead
@thierryhenry674

Because they have both learned from the greatest ever tactician in the world, Pep Guardiola. Alonso is doing great. Xavi won the La Liga. Arteta got 2nd place in the PL just behind Pep. Kompany won the English Championship. EnzoMaresca’s Leicester is topping the English Championship this season. Fabregas is of course, going to become a great tactician. He is a Spanish midfielder. So he reads the game in a more sophisticated way, because Spanish midfielders THINK a lot of how to build up. Not just hoof the ball forward. He is a La Masia graduate. So he has learned the football philosophies that are passed on from Cruyff. He has learned from Pep Guardiola, who has revolutionised modern tactics, taking the complexity of tactics into a whole new level, making it like a micromanaged chess game. He got his coaching badges at Arsenal under Arteta. Which Pep, Arteta and also Fabregas himself, are Spanish midfielders and La Masia graduates.

Cesc also learned from Mourinho and Wenger.
@thierryhenry674
@thierryhenry674 5 ай бұрын
@@louissolano9929 Mourinho is just about simple kick and rush, parking the bus football. Not much tactical complexity in it. Wenger said that he prefers to give freedom to the players rather than doing much tactics. A lot of ex players also said they learned tactics the first time once they left Arsenal. This approach works in the old days. But as tactical systems are getting more and more advanced, complex and sophisticated, his approach won’t be able to beat the modern micromanage chess like approach. Wenger might have taught him how to build a vision, a culture, how to develop players. But in terms of tactics, more than 95% of their knowledge is actually from Pep, because Pep’s approach was way more advanced than other managers.

Cancelo, Zinchenko, Guerreiro, Kimmich are those type of players. It’s just that they are playing fullbacks in the modern game. A lot of false 9, are also those type of players. ColePalmer, Foden, Fernandes, Silva, Gundogan, Pedri, Gavi, DeJong are also those type of players. Neuer and Ederson also seems to be very silky. It’s just they are goalkeepers.

the lazy classic number 10..the magician..the creator who's is no longer with us. Players are pawns who are being controlled by the manager. They are told what to do in and out of possession and all of the players are physically strong enough to play 100min. The magician used to have more time and space around the 60th min. Time and space are limited. Football in 2023 is a tactical physical game with a lack of magic and creativity. Its boring and predictable. The fifa should have seen this coming and should have intervened on time by rewarding attacking teams or remove the off side trap which would create more time and space for the magicians and creators.

My Favourite Player of All Time: ● Fabregas was 17 years old during virtually the entirety of his breakthrough season of 04/05 and made 33 league appearances (24 starts) in a side just off the back of winning the previous seasons league without losing a game, finished 2nd in that current campaign and won the FA Cup. Just let that sink in. Absolutely frightening 😲. ● Youngest Arsenal goalscorer: (16 years 212 days v Wolves Dec 2003) Youngest Arsenal goalscorer in League: (17 years 113 days v Blackburn Aug 2004) Youngest Arsenal goalscorer in Europe: (17 years 217 days v Rosenborg Dec 2004) ● Only he and Evan Ferguson have 10+ goals/assists to there names as 18 year olds in the Premier League era who weren't from England. Had to get that one in as an Irishman 😄. ● Statistics show that in the five years prior to Fàbregas's departure from Arsenal, Fàbregas created 466 goal-scoring chances, made 86 assists and scored 48 goals, all three statistics topping those of new teammates Xavi and Andrés Iniesta, despite both having made more appearances in the same period. ● 09/10 League Season: Apps: 27 Goals: 15 Assists: 15 Who knows what numbers he would have finished with that season if he'd avoided a few niggling injuries during the first half of that campaign and not fractured his leg to Barca in March and been ruled out for the remainder of the season. I've no doubt that he would have comfortably broken the record of 20 assists in a PL season and in all likelihood would have 20+ League goals to his name alongside it. All from CM at 22 years of age in his second season as club captain as well it's worth noting. ● All time leader in history of assists for Spanish national team. ● Most assists as a CM in the 21st century ahead of the likes of Lampard, Gerrard, Iniesta & Xavi. ● Only player in PL era to record 10+ assists in 6 separate seasons. ● 2nd All Time Leader in assists in PL history to Ryan Giggs who spent 9 and a half more seasons than him in the PL . ● Made captain of Arsenal at the tender age of 21 as well. Yep this is basically what De Zerbi is operating currently at Brighton who average the highest possession in the league. Not surprising since Cesc played his best football in possession heavy sides (Arsenal and Barca). Only flaw with this system is that it isn't universal. It's success is entirely reliant on press resistant and duel winning players all over the park - including the GK. Furthermore, accurate long passers and direct wingers are essential as 1v1 situations can be common if the opponent is aggressive with their press as Cesc explains.

@@yaredmussie4086He was much better individually at Arsenal. He had more success collectively at Chelsea and I know he got 18 assists when they won the Prem in 14/15 and got something like 11 assists from 11 starts during the second half of the 16/17 campaign when they won it that season but he was a much more well rounded footballer in his Arsenal days. He was far nimbler on his feet, had more demands in his role, and was given licence to get up & down the pitch, which made him a massive goal threat as well as being able to drop deeper at times and dictate the tempo of games. He was pigeonholed into a strict & specific deep lying playmaker role under Mourinho & Conte, which, although he performed brilliantly, restricted him from showcasing other aspects of his game. He performed best when he had the freedom to get around the pitch as an all action midfielder similar to someone like Gerrard during his peak years. His best years, imo were from 2006-2011.

I also think that modern wingers need to be more "balanced" (instead of just being "go inside and shoot with your strong foot"): being able to support the team in both offense and defense makes huge difference, and playing wider on offense can create big spaces for modern FBs to go inside the box (seeing it quite often in AC Milan with Leao often playing wide and Theo Hernandez pushing inside, between defenders CB and FB, if he's not being followed by a midfielder)

I find it quite funny how such a gifted midfielder has sacked off the 9 and instead has two 10s. It also contrasts with Pep's evolution in England of getting in a big, strong no. 9. I think two 10s might struggle to penetrate a low block and not get enough touches in dangerous areas in the box. Also, having your most advanced players on the wings increases their distance to goal, which might allow opposing CBs to recover ground. Your wingers would need to be very quick.

I play like this in FIFA, and find that I have to lure the defense into fouling me around the edge of the box, and having good free kick takers and set pieces as my only way to beat good low blocks. Maybe we’ll see some unique tactics from set pieces

That's why you need a hybrid 9/10. The striker is basically a 9 and a half. We had Firmino at Liverpool who linked the play but when we played against deep compact defences he was in the box.

He was absolute magic.
