I came across this video of The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens while browsing on Facebook and shared it to my timeline there and not finding it on KZbin found a way to upload it. One of my favorite of all time. I love the synchronized singing by all the singers included the young lady with the high notes.

The original is Anita Darian and thank you for acknowledging that she could wipe the floor with this soprano. Something other people don’t have the musical prowess to figure out.

If you're going to demean the opinions of the other commentators here -- none of which questioned the prowess of the soprano who sang in the original recording -- you could at least take the time to do so using the correct words while doing so. It would behoove you to understand that tastes in all art forms are purely subjective, for even though there are some objective standards in music -- a C note is a C note -- the execution of the art and its final composition affects the patron of that art uniquely. If I say that the 4th movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony is the greatest piece of music ever composed, there is nothing you can say to prove that I am wrong. It is a subjective opinion that isn't based on a rational, objective, indisputable calculation. I say that because that's how it affects me. So, those who are more impressed by the soprano singing back up in this video than the woman who sang in the original recording aren't "wrong" or "right". It's just how they feel.

This song was recorded in " Zulu " in 1939 by a South African immigrant Solomon Linda and his group " Evening Birds " . the song was called " MBUBE " , which means LION , it was a lullaby, for which he got 10 shillings In 1961, George David Weiss recorded English lyrics to it, it went to No. 1, and became copyright Linda died in 1962 in poverty from kidney failure. In 2006 Linda receives for his part in the song, after a settlement with Disney In 2017 the settlement ends There were long fights to get any money for royalties.

This is a PBS special (2000). Jay Siegel's Tokens reunited with original Tokens Mitch & Phil Margo. At that time Jay's group had John 'Jay' Traynor (left) who was original lead singer for Jay & The Americans, big hit 'She Cried'. John passed away in 2014. Bill Reid is on the right who continues to perform in Jay Siegel's Tokens. Mitch & Phil toured as The Tokens until Mitch passed on in 2017. Jay is still out there with Bill and a singer who replaced John/Jay. Catch them live while you still can as Jay is 81 yrs old.
