This is the Cessna 172 Full Motion Flight Simulator of the DHBW Ravensburg University. It consists of a TRC Simulators 472F Cabin and a 6DOF Motion Platform build of 6 electric actuators by SEW Eurodrive. Some Parts are still more or less provisional, like the wooden struts.
Flight Simulation Software: Microsoft FSX or Lockheed Martin Prepar3D
Addons: Aerosoft Friedrichshafen, Aerosoft VFR Germany Süddeutschland, Thomas Zipfels Wildberg - Fliegender Bauer (Freeware)
Motion Cueing Software: BFF Motion Driver

Nice to see a simulator rig moving properly to simulate forces as oppose to duplicating the planes attitude. So many videos of home made rigs are doing this. I saw a guy flying a plane upside down and his rig was upside down!

That was some right to left crosswind on the take-off! Whew! I would've loved to be in that to see how real it felt. From what I could see, it looked pretty close to how that feels! Those linear actuators are noisy! Surely that could be mitigated. Between the huffing and puffing and the ring of the currents, I wonder that a pneumatic system would be better. Nowhere as control-able or trackable though. I love these things! I had a friend that worked at Flight Safety back in the 80's. At the time, they were one of the few that built full-scale simulators for all forms of craft. the were monstrous, full-sized cockpits of 737, 747, Jet Ranger and I flew in an early Airbus simulator, I actually brought that pig down on my first try! (My second, not so much! All souls were lost!) They had a place for an instructor or test administrator to sit back in the back and they would throw challenging situations at actual commercial pilots to see how they handled it. From bird-strikes to decompression, to smoke in the cabin! As long as it was there to be completed, if it was working at all, employees were invited to come in and put some hours on them to help to debug them. Half of the time the motion systems would not be ready to go but it didn't matter. You were fully immersed, where every switch was there and had a function. No Ctrl+E to autostart the engines! The only time I ever had an issue was while testing a Bell Ranger, I was really suspending my belief and my stomach was doig things and 1500 feet above a populated area, the tail rotor system glitches and I went into an uncontrollable flat spin, at hover! It kept going faster and faster until the motion systems went into "screw this" mode, but the simulation was still in the spin. I was about to throw up when the guy manning the system shut it down and I gclimbed out green in the gills. I had found a bug! It felt like I had one as well!

Nice sim, though the 6DOF is overkill, still nice. I think XPlane visuals are better than FSX. For more serious training, I would black out the surroundings, and doors on. Wish I had any sim back in the 80's when I started flying. Today, I fly and maintain the multimillion dollar airline kind. Great job, and thanks for sharing.

When you think the old Link trainers used bellows. I wonder if car lifting air bags and a cheap compressor could be used. I built a two axis motion sim, but abandoned it after a while as it did not feel realistic. In realty you don't feel lean when turning in flight and only extreme pitch up or down do you notice pitch. Most important is the vertical sensation. Also in real flight i notice seat movement more than airframe movement. My body moves relative to the cabin interior. Just make seat move up or down a few centimetres, in fact just mount seat on springs.

@martinlaubner
@martinlaubner 7 жыл бұрын
You are right my friend. The problem is, that it is quite different to real-life flying, because there is no control loading system. Especially the rudder is very sensitive in the sim because you also control the nose wheel with the pedals but you lack the force feedback you have in a real C172. Other Pilots who flew with the sim, had the same difficulties. In a real aircraft I have no problems maintaining centerline direction. But to be honest, I don't fly in real thunderstorms ;-)
@Kron1K_

Me and all my un-educated comments :P The C172 seems to be harder to taxi than most planes anyway. I can taxi a 777 easier than a c172 hahah. I have only sim experience though, I have no idea if its like this in real life. Thanks for taking the time to reply :) Once again, amazing setup! :)

I remember one time on fsx I was landing on 04L at JFK on a CLS B747 as I was about 100' to touch down suddenly a wind gust pushed me to the right had to abort landing immediately or I would've ended up on the grass then screen would show crash. Then went around and same gust was there but I was prepared.

Stick it on a giant 8 ton industrial robot arm so it can twirl you around at different angles. It will simulate the violent motions of a jet fighter. It would make an extreme thrill ride as well as a super imersive flight Sim station.

Awesome FMS. I would like to say though you should not be training for this type of flying as your flight planning skills (weather) should have revealed to you not to go up. I realize we get surprised by weather at times, but when in doubt turn about and don't get tempted unless you like living on the edge. Just had to throw that out there for those on the edge. Calm blue skies to all.
