I'm trying to learn X-Plane 11 and was confused about VOR flying and you made it so easily to understand and your tone of voice made it more relaxing. Great instructor, Thank you.

Great, Frank! Yes, VOR navigation isn’t the sort of thing that’s easy to figure out or pick up on. It takes some intentional learning, but keep at it - you’ll get it! A great exercise to do is to take off from an airport with a VOR on or near it (like KAHN, for instance). Fly around for a bit and work to get a good way from the airport. Work on some maneuvers, or something that makes you lose your way a bit. Then, play “let me find my way back to the airport using ONLY the VOR.” Turn off the GPS and anything else that would help you navigate besides the VOR. It’s a great way to get familiar with it before getting bogged down in much of the details that VOR learning can throw at you. Have fun!

I still watch clayviation's videos 3.5 years after they were released. I wish you made more videos today on these topics because they are the best and are explained eloquently. I have been simming since 2020 and most of what I have Iearnt on VOR navigation, since the very beginning, was what clayviation shared in his great videos. Thank you, Sir!

Very kind words, Ghost21. I’m glad you’ve found them valuable. I wish I was producing more, too, but do know that I have more in the plan book and hope to get back to it soon.

I have been looking for a video tutorial like this for X-Plane and I have found it. Thanks you so much for explaining how to set it up and fly it the way it is supposed to be done. Kudos. I am already subscribed. Will come back for the radio lesson.

Well done. As a sim pilot I always used VOR back in the SubLogic, Pre GPS days. Now GPS is my goto but it's a good fundamental to have VOR knowledge as a fall back.

Pretty nice effort. One very important distinction though is as it relates to the VOR navigation - there are NO radials TO. Radials by definition emanate from a VOR . Now we may fly a bearing TO a VOR or fly a radial from a VOR but there are no 'TO radials'

@@clayviation What version of the Cessna 172 are you flying in this VOR demo?......and how did you pull up that sectional chart at 1:17 in the video and thank you
@clayviation5 жыл бұрын
I tend to use the Airfoillabs Cessna 172, as I did here. The sectional overlay is a cut in from ForeFlight on my iPad, but you can use the M key to pull up an in game map or use a website like Skyvector.

A question To realign the needle into the middle you go to the direction that it is in (if it is inclining to the right take your airplane to the right) does that differ if you are going TO or FOR the station?

That’s the first I’ve heard that they are blurry. You might check your KZbin stream quality and make sure it’s 1080.

How are you quickly zooming into your radio stack and other instruments? (X-Plane noob used to FSX).
@clayviation7 жыл бұрын
Great question, NukeDaddy! Many of my movements are simply the arrow keys on the keyboard - up, down, left, right. Period and comma zoom in and out. For a tilt, use R and F for up and down, Q and E for left and right. If there is a certain view you use often, you can assign it to your num pad keys. Shift + 1-9 captures the view, and then just use the 1-9 you set on the num pad to go back to it. Super handy to assign some of those to buttons on a joystick or such.
@nukedaddy7 жыл бұрын
clayviation I found the saved views for the keyboard and then the “memorize views” keys and used those to set it up. Thanks!
