This video gives a pilot's view and experience in piloting a 1974 Cessna 310Q twin-engine airplane from transit cruise along the Georgia Coastline at 9,000 feet toward Vectors-To-Final (VTF) RNAV Z for Runway 28 at KSAV. This video format gives the complete experience in transition from cruise to approach to landing. Your comments and questions are welcomed and encouraged. The purpose of the video is to raise awareness of the general aviation flying community and demonstrate flying complex airplanes. Enjoy!!

This video may be the reason a teenager decides to be a pilot. I encourage kids to join the Civil Air Patrol it's a hidden gem. Not expensive. My 22 year old was a member. Now he maintains F16's fighters currently stationed in Italy and has visited over 5 countries in the last four years. Pass the word. Please keep posting you videos. Greetings from Virginia

I think your fan base is going to be phenomenal over time. I'm not a pilot, but I play one on MSFS X. I love the aviation channels. I'm grateful to you and other aviators who share their passion and promote aviation. Decades ago i aspired to be a recreational private pilot..even took some lessons. I learned very quickly that I didn't have what it takes to competently fly an airplane of any type. I love your channel , which I recently discovered and I'm now a fan and subscriber. Good luck and blessings.

310Q's are sweet airplanes. I don't like the belt driven alternators on the IO-470's, especially in icing conditions but they are slick machines which can haul ass and look cool. The one I flew had most of its switches up above the glareshield which gave it the look of an FCP in an airliner.
@billinga
@billinga 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and the insights. There is value in belt driven alternators especially when issues arise. Replacing the belt is a $15 part and does not affect internal engine operations. The gear driven alternator has some failure modes that places metal into the engine oil. Also, gear driven alternator is another check point for oil leaks. Anyway, neither configuration is free of risks and the operator must understand general operations and failure modes/mitigations. Stay safe!!

This is one of the best videos of piloting an aircraft that I've seen. It displays the necessary flying instruments allowing one to see the aircraft's heading, altitude, etc, etc making one feel being sitting next to the pilot. In addition, the audio between the pilot and control towers is awesome. Great job putting the video together.

If you ever have the time, it would be great if you could get around to schools a couple o few times a year and tell your story - to black boys, they really need it, not that it would do any good, but you show there are avenues. Aviation has a different language for sure. The good news is the language has a limited vocabulary and after some practice, expected patterns of use are learned and repeated. It is hard for most to initially understand but after a couple of months, it gets better. Thanks for watching!

Long Passion Rant ahead, caution!! LOL First read this --> www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2017/november/pilot/musings-married-to-my-airplane Now the background: In April of 2012, after some 300 hours in the Cardinal, I began to search for a suitable platform to fill these new mission/role requirements. I had flown and rented many types of GA aircraft and have developed a bias for Cessna and its design philosophy. As such, I had a choice in going from C177 ($60K to acquire, 10GPH, 135 KIAS) to something more capable. The Cessna choices were C182($80-120K, 13GPH, 145KIAS), C210($140K-240K, 17 GPH, 155 KIAS) and C310P/Q ($80-140K, 24GPH 175 KIAS). The most economical with best all-around utility was the C182. The better performer while yielding some economy was the C210. The best performer while yielding yet a little more economy was the C310. Below is a table of operating economics for flight lengths of 305/340/425 miles. Consequently, the candiate platforms were C-182RG, C-210, Baron, Seneca, Aztec and C-310. These were the airframes with which I had familiarity and insights into their operation and performance. The first down select was based on useful load and performance. That left the Baron, C-210 and the C-310. Then came the analysis of purchase price and maintenance costs. There are some nuances involved in comparing Cessna Centurian(C-210), Beech Baron (B-55/58) and the Cessna Songbird (C-310). A comparably equipped Baron in the same/similar year as a Songbird was hard to find/compare at that time. My purchase budget dictated a look at 1972-1976 for model review. However, because the Baron has been in continuous production, it gets a plus in maintenance. The downselect for the Baron came because of the cockpit arrangement and purchase price. I am a fan of Cessna's design philiophy and comfortable with Cessna panel layout. For my new role/mission, the choice came down to the Centuarian(C-210) or the Songbird (C-310). Given the market at the time, late model 210s and 310Rs were trading at a premium(>$120K). While maintenace costs are considerably more for a twin than single, the useful load, slightly better performance (310Q) and system redundancy(safety) were worth the difference. I settled on the 310Q as my desired platform to fulfill my flying needs and purchase budget(

I appreciate your response👍🏻 Very straightforward. I also once considered Duke, Commander 500. But C310 I hear is much cost effective and has good reputation of being long living Cessna line.

Hi. Most interesting. What is the horizontal meter sitting atop your glare shield? Looks like it might be an AOA indicator. I've never seen an RNAV approach. As I recall it offsets a VOR to a point at which it can simulate a non-precision approach where there is none.
@billinga
@billinga 8 ай бұрын
Indeed, this was a Cessna innovation in 1974 placing a variable-resistor in the stall warning vane to produce an early example of an AoA. It works but is not in the scan on final. Only fifty of the 310s had this installed in 1974. RNAV is a GPS approach and when supplemented by ground "augmentation" can produce precision guidance to roughly 200 feet agl. Aircraft must have WAAS capable GPS unit to use the published LPV precision approaches. THanks for watching!!

Advice for new aviators. Join flying groups/clubs to learn as much as possible about the flying culture. Ask questions about flying and how others got started in general aviation. Ask for a mentor/advisor to help(ask online or in person). Listen to stories about how airplanes are used. All this will serve you well throughout your aviation journey. There are many online groups that are aircraft-type specific and most are free to join and review conversations/threads. Keep pressing forward, Cheers!!
