As an American, every time I see a rouge in the CFL? I smile. I'm not a fan of awarding a point for a missed field goal, but otherwise I love the rule. To see multiple rouges in a game is special to me. And to see a game's outcome *decided* by a rouge gives me another reason why I enjoy the CFL to the point where I watch it instead of the NFL.
@teo_heel11 ай бұрын
Giving a single point for a missed field goal that ended with the ball staying in the opponent end zone (or even when the ball went out of bounds in the end zone) isn't that bad of the idea. If you miss a field goal, there's a big chance of a TD on return, the size of the field allows you to do crazy routes on return. So I see nothing wrong with giving a point for not letting a return to happen at all.

@neilm2794 Жыл бұрын
No Yards is only applicable to punt returns. If the bonehead Elk had left the ball on the ground, Sask could have recovered it for a touchdown. Terrible coaching not to make a rookie KR aware that the ball is still live in the end zone in the CFL. The guy didn't watch Alford bring the missed FG out of the end zone for a 125-yard TD return?

On kickoffs everyone is behind the kicker so you don't have to worry about No Yards.
@kevinreilly51 Жыл бұрын
To be slightly pedantic, No Yards only applies to players who are *in front* of the ball when it is kicked - those behind the ball when kicked (i.e. "onside" like with rugby parlance) can go after the live ball. On kickoffs, every member of the kicking team is by definition onside, while on punts the punter is almost always the only onside player with everyone in front of him. In practice this means that you have to give yards off of a punt but not on a kickoff, but it is possible to have someone be behind a punter when he kicks it and fairly recover the ball off the ground/in the air.

@@CharlesLiu6111 The difference is there's no change to the scoreboard with a goal line drop or 5m scrum. I played union in high school and played 6 years of American football under college rules in Australia in my late 20s. The thing that is close to the Canadian Rouge is in Australian Rules football where you get a point if you miss the goal. Here's an odd fact a goal in Australian rules football, a touchdown in either American or Canadian football and a converted try in Rugby League are all worth 6 points. Union used to be 6 for a converted try until they made a try 5 points. But then a converted try in union is the same (7 points) as a converted touchdown in American and Canadian football. But then Rugby league also has a 1 point field goal like the rouge. Its strange there's all these different codes with some common origins but vastly different histories have similarities in scoring.

Over the years we’ve seen the defenders pick up the ball and kick it back out of the end zone only to have the offence kick it back into the end zone. Those are bad rules.

@@wastedbread8036 CFL kickers kick for field position as well. If you take a knee in the EZ you get the ball on the 40. So there is a balance between scoring the single, depending on the game situation or trying to pin the opponent deep. The American version of the game is way dumbed down. Also the point is not awarded for a missed field goal it is awarded because the returning team does not or cannot return the ball out of the EZ.
