Right, make sure you tick "texture" instead of "points" on the mapping nodes in the gradient tree. It's paramount to success, at least in the latest Blender versions. I nearly went insane trying to figure out what was causing the issue, so just be mindful of that lol

To have and change between multiple materials: Copy the mask and link it to a new empty, add your new material, and then as before link the Gradient Texture to the Factor in a NEW Mix Shader. Then link the new material into the Mix Shader and then link the OLD mix shader in the NEW mix shader. NOTE: if it doesn't work, just swap the position of the new material and the old mix shader in the new mix shaders.

@ajpink58802 жыл бұрын
for some reason in my case using an empty didn't work right, but eventually found that you can animate values by right clicking them and clicking "insert keyframe" or by pressing 'i'. putting this here so hopefully the next guy who needs this finds it easier.

Very helpful! Thank you! I wonder, how would you go about making the transition appear in a more spherical or radial shape?
@cgboost2 ай бұрын
Hi, great that the tutorial is helpful :) For a spherical transition you could use a spherical gradient for setting up the mask so it will have a round shape. ~ Masha

This is awesome thank you! Is there a way to do a similar transition like this from transparent to colored version of a mesh?
@cgboost11 ай бұрын
Sure, you can use the exact same technique but instead of using a material with the clay texture you just add as second material a principled bsdf with alpha set to 0. Should work. ~Masha

Can this method also work for changing the look of something at the center of an object, branching outward to the surface of an object?
@lazyartist69853 жыл бұрын
You can use geometry data for a proximity effect I guess, and then whenever you bring the controller object to the parts of the mesh only the near ones will change material.
@nolanbennett3463 жыл бұрын
Can you do this with bump or 3D vector extrusion masks like in Luca? Can you also apply some sort of flare or change in the mask near the object?
@cgboost3 жыл бұрын
Hey Nolan, you can definitely use bump - check 8:30 I took a look at Luca (there is a section about it early in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH24q3tpfrWNgrM&ab_channel=TheThings) and you can clearly see they use real geometry. That means the scales are real geomtry and the transition is done in a way, so they appear and lay on the skin eventually. So only the color transition is done through shading. Not sure what you mean by flare or change in the mask near the object. Hope it helps!

how would you go about adding in displacement to this effect....?
@cgboost2 жыл бұрын
There are probably many ways to do it. What you could try is to use the Displace modifier, and add some texture for the deformation, and set the "Coordinates" to "Object" and pick the same object as used in the shader for controlling the position of the transition.

Can you make a transition from the center of an object? I mean like a radial gradient transition effect rather than linear. Thanks
@cgboost2 жыл бұрын
Hi, yeah, you should use the spherical setup for the gradient texture and mess around a bit with the mapping node to make it small enough to be visibly round. But it's absolutely possible. ~ Masha

Well, the new creatures are oriented towards the old one. So we have this little creature and a raptor-like creature will be part of the future course update. The turtle was from a free KZbin video (it is not in the course anymore): kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2ayZGVvj9Nne7M

Hi Arthur, the course itself starts at "zero" for the sculpting part. Required is a good understanding of the general Blender basics, like navigation, understanding the UI, working with 3D objects and working in edit mode. Some basic shader nodes knowledge is also useful.

Is there any way to export shader graph animation embedded into obj, fbx or glb files? Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks.
@cgboost2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I don't really think so. At least not in any efficient way. Maaaybe if you used custom attributes to drive the animaiton and then get this information out, but this kind of information is not well supported in Blender and even if it was, it would still mean replugging everything elsewhere. What exactly is the aim of exporting this? this also changes what you might need to do.
