The mere mention of 9.9 gets CGC fanboys excited...With bad paper quality and poor packaging distribution to retailers there is no way to get a 9.9 unless its a foil/cardstock...With that said, its another income stream for them to charge for a prescreen at an even higher, which they will increase as they usually do, and later damage while encapsulating the book and not compensating you for it. The audacity to offer more services when rhey can even do the basics like caring for ones personal property/investment when they cant even be precise for basuc grading. Poor leadership...the next steps will really show how negligent Nelson is and ill be watching w/ my popcorn on the side saying: " I told ya so!"

By Matt even speaking to that, I think he admitted that their grading credibility is in question because you can somehow turn some of your 9.8s to a 9.9. So either his staff isn't adequately trained to grade properly, or they're trying to downright control the market by not allowing any 9.9s or 10s to show up, or their credibility as a whole is shot because they're now just throwing random grades out and making a "new norm". But yeah, money grab was the first thing a lot of people thought.

Call me cynical, but i dont think this is going to damage CGC at all, but do think it'll lead to a dip in prices. If CBCS were jumping on this (offering free/discounted reholders from CGC etc.) It might shift the market. Alas, i think we're stuck with CGC..

Yes....thank you! Word for word exactly what the community is thinking. Five or six years ago when I started collecting comics again the first time I saw slabs I wondered why they didn't use plastic screws for the corners. The plastic screw can easily screw into a locking mechanism that's colored and if that screw is backed out it will break the locking mechanism. We use stuff like this in construction all the time. They also have to make the slabs a little bit bigger and add a inner wall so that the comic cannot be slid out unless the top cover has been completely taken off. Certified and Guaranteed

The CBCS case is actually thinner AND extremely difficult to open, so thickness and function don't equate. I've been cracking slabs for 3 years now - CGC can be done with my fingertips almost instantly....CBCS is with a screwdriver, takes time and is actually quite difficult to do...the difference between the brands is amazing.

Pre-screens for 9.9s? Where the heck are 9.9s going to come from? The best in the industry of pressing and cleaning these days only really get 9.8s on average. Are they going to lower the bar so yesterdays 9.8s are tomorrows 9.9s? Are only CGCs pressers and cleaners going to be able to generate 9.9s? This can-o-worms could end badly. Very badly!

CGC doesn't need to change their case. They need a high resolution scan of each book after it's graded, available for people to be able to look at online. Which they DID months before the scam was found out by the comic community. The question they should have asked in the interview was: WHY did CGC start offering this for free then? And did they know about the scam before and not tell anyone?

I watch that interview when it came came out pretty lame. Then when he was talking about how he’d reimbursed people at FMV one of the FMV at the time the guy bought the book was 25K and now it’s say 17 K or lower person is not gonna get the value they paid. I feel if Steve Borck was still there the shit would’ve been handled completely differently. CGC just set themselves up for action lawsuit. I mean so. Many questions weren’t asked. It’s ridiculous. I recently found out there was a massive amount of comic book 'micro' trimming years ago that CGC was unaware of until collectors pointed it out. Many of those books are still in circulation, not noted as trimmed. That sure got swept under the carpet.

100% agree with you. My thoughts exactly. It’s not so much of a big deal if you’re buying a $200 slab. But why in the world would I pay $30k (say) for a comic encased in cheap plastic?? I know precious metals refiners like PAMP do a bang on job encasing their products in tamper-proof packaging. Surely CGC should do the same. CGC could have 2 different streams of packaging for comics: one process leading to a robust tamper proof case for encasing really valuable comics ($5,000+ say), and maintain the current cheap crappy encapsulation for any comic sub-$5,000. This will of course lead to massive price hikes for the top tier comic encapsulations. But if a buyer is going to shell out thousands for a comic book, these crappy cases are not going to cut it…

I like CBCS more and more and I also feel their grading is real accurate. CBCS labels and cases have come a long way as well. I'm surprised that prices for CBCS graded books are still coming in at a lower value than CGC.

Up front I use both CGC and CBCS - I'm sure everyone knows that CBCS was founded by a co-founder and developer of the initial grading standards/process at CGC. The interview should have also asked if CGC was able to catch this or was it just the community -I don't think CGC can catch when things are tampered with - and nothing they have said so far makes me think any different

I think it's absolutely absurd to make this video piggybacking on, and further criticizing the work of, the two guys that actually broke the news of this problem in the first place without even tagging them or linking to the channel, and telling people NOT to watch the video they made! Please think about the time and work that go into actually investigating this, making and developing the contacts, scheduling an interview etc etc, before dismissing someone else's work as soft or "fluff". Something can be done about this: submit to CBCS exclusively. CBCS has a vastly superior product: a secure, solid case which does not allow the books to move within them at all, never any newton rings, and alas! a better label. But collectors will still submit to CGC, because collectors want CGC cases, because they demand a higher price. So nothing will ever change. Ignorance is bliss…

I have a question. I have a ASM 300 cgc 9.8 but its in one of those older slimmer, flimsier cases. Before the scam, I was thinking of getting it recased (the newer and thicker ones) but at this point I'm unsure since that particular book was the one that got hit with the most scams. On top of redesigning the slab, they should provide more of a track record for each book. All books should have more detailed grader notes and numbers associated with the “three” graders that reviewed the book. They need to hold themselves accountable for their own poor grading. The fact that it’s all so loosey goosey subjective garbage is why it was so easy to scam everyone in the first place.

CGC went from being a service that helped to revitalize the market to a service that suddenly defined the market. I'm a comic collector. I'm not a case collector. Years from now, a graded (preserved) book will retain value. The emphasis on WHO graded the book will diminish, as it should. A 9.8 CGC is NOT worth more than the book within. As always, I buy the book. It's like you've mentioned in the past. You're not buying the case... I never thought I'd say this, but, "Comic collecting was more fun during a pandemic!" 🤔

If you really want their feet held to the fire, then start by reaching out to investigative reporters at local media outlets in Sarasota where they are located. Those guys are always looking for a new exposé for the nightly news. I don't know if anybody else noticed yet. But the interview has already had an affect. I was on ebay and noticed you can filter by looking for 9.9 now. You could never do that b4, 9.8 has always been the highest you could filter for.

He committed to nothing on this interview. No new cases or anything to give the consumer, any confidence that they are going to spend an extra penny to make the product better. But I guarantee they will raise prices.

As people are saying it needs a new case or how can it be trusted to spend many thousands on a book, you would now be safer looking at a raw book than wondering what is actually sealed in the case. Also 9.9 screens seem real stupid, would you pay $9 or more by then for a prescreen and not take a 9.8 anyway?
