Ivo's performing powers were at its hight of the supreme Titans and Genuises one can only dream of those days back in the late 1980's. Pogorelich is simply a rare one-of-a- kind of a born-artist-pianist-genuis who is born evey couple of decades, if not centenary. In 1980, after the scandal uproar at Warsaw concours where Martha resigned as a jury to protest against Pogorelich having been eliminated not to reach the Final rounds, the scandal fueled Ivo to reach a super-stardom rare in history haven been declared "Genius" by Martha herself. I was among the lucky ones to hear his first recitals immediately following the Warsaw Drama at Canegie Hall and Lincoln Center where I truly was flabergasted and mesmorized by Pogorelich's "perfect-physical technical abilities and mastery over the keyboard," but not only, with his deepest musicality, architectual approach to music-making and exuding 1000 palette of colours and nuances, exceeding perfect finger articulations he drew out from the gorgeous Hamburg Steinway. So dramatic and effective was every detailed and analyzed performance of "Gaspard de la nuit", the sounds and the tone poem Ivo drew from the piano gave me shivers down the spine and tears down my cheeks. Yes, Ivo is a Genuis without a question, his perfect musicality enables him to perform at the same most demanding earnest level of highest state whether it's Bach, Scarlatti, Chopin or Ravel. To our chagrin, he was unable to keep up this level of the "highest state of being" as a performing artist, due to his life threatening illness and sadly losing his right-hand/twin soul, his beloved pedagogue wife, Aliza Kezeradze, who passed away in 1996. Whether the loss of his beloved teacher-wife was too great for Ivo, combined with fighting to stay alive and healthy led Pogorelich to eventually fade and deteriorate into "shadows" of his former Glorious self, we do not know exactly. What is clear, is that this 1986 recording of Bach English Suites will remain my treasure of all treasures which I shall cherish to my death. NO such equivalent of absolute perfection of Bach performed on piano will be surpassed or ever repeated. My deepest gratitude to Ivo and Aliza, who taught Ivo to reach the Heavenly hight of the greatest and the most exquisite leve of piano playing ever. I only wish and pray that Pogorelich would one day be able to raise his state of health and being to his former Glorious Self.

I bought this vinyl a few decades ago and it still is my favorite rendition of Bach's English Suites. It is simply amazing, stunning. I really love Pogorelich's interpretations of pretty much everything he played. That being said, not so sure I would give that amount of importance to the Warsaw competition. The very notion of music competitions is quite pathetic. The proof that they are useless is the fact that Pogorelich became a pianist with a fantastic career.

At first I thought the speed is too fast. But if you listen to it very carefully, then you will find out that Pogorelich plays every note with utmost control and concentration. In that sense, this is not a 'rushed' performance at all.

One of the greatest Bach keyboard records of all time. Terrible that he didn't survive to keep playing. Madness is very close to this kind of genius talent. I am so grateful that I got to hear him give a great recital at his own Pogorerelich Competition in Ambassador Hall in Los Angeles many years ago, although the real star that year was the then-contestant Sergei Babayan, who many said was denied the top prize by Pogorelich himself because he was too potentially as great a pianist. Fortunately, Babayan has had continued a great career as pedagogue as well as a performer (of, and with, his greatest pupil, Daniil Trifonov) Still, of all the "mad" pianists, one misses Ivo, and has to be eternally grateful this recording.

One of my favourite Bach records too, but unfortunately P did survive and is still playing. I've seen him twice in the last 5 years or so, and it's embarrassing: phrases drawn out until they lose any meaning, inability to project any connection of musical ideas, absurd pauses, a lot of painful banging (though he still has a great pianissimo tone)... I stayed until the end of the first concert because I thought he might play at least one piece well, but no; and I left half-way through the second. It's sad that this has happened to such a great pianist. There's some examples of recent concerts on KZbin.

Stating that P "unfortunately" did survive is not a very nice thing to say but there are all kinds of people. Actually P is 61 years old and still playing, His health was never good and he has to tread very carefully to keep himself alive. His playing is controversial (always was) but Argerich was very right in calling him a "genius" and leave the jury of that contest rigged, as almost always by nationalism, politics and ignorance. His Scarlatti is insurpasable (perhaps Alice Ader) and these Bach Suites would make poor Glenn Gould eat his fingers if he could listen to them.

I remember sitting in the basement with my late dad and feeling his sheer delight while listening to this recording. Although I prefer now the aesthetics of Bach performed on the harpsichord, this interpretation still has a spark so many years later, and it brings me back to those precious moments.

This man is a great Maestro with a lot of personnality, i enjoy this kind of musicien. The polyphonic music of Bach is the most difficult music to play on keyboard because Bach thinks music first, dialogue between severals melodies, and after, how to realised on keyboard ?... It's not a pianistic music like Chopin, Liszt or Rachmaninov who composed for keyboard, you see what i mean ? With 10 fingers you have to conducted the 2, 3, or 4 polyphonics lines, trust me it's not easy, not easy at all.

I wish another really experienced pianist could tell me if this is possible . Everyone talks about michelangeli but I don't hear this separation and character in ever voice in his famous Debussy preludes or in his Scarlatti as wonderful as they are . Pogorelich and DG made the best pair This is the most impossibly perfect , musical , dancing rhythms you will ever hear in Bach . Did Tureck ever hear theserecordings . When I listen I believe it must be mostly studio work each voice in some areas is like a pianist in a different room . Perahia and all the rest are perfect but these recordings . i grew up with Gould and Argerich in No. 2 .

I have not heard him play recently, but he will always be one of the two or three greatest Bach performers of all time, IMO. I don’t include Glenn Gould in those top positions, btw, though he was also a genius of sorts, and his quirky performances will always be around for people to make up their own minds. What makes Ivo so great is his understanding of voices and lines. Few performers of any period do this so well. I was immediately taken with his performances after hearing a few movements and realizing that he’s playing what I imagine when I play. Except that he’s succeeding, where I… um… continue to work at it. Bach is the place to learn that. If your Bach is square and awkward, your Rachmaninov will be similar. It’s all about lines and voices, which of course includes phrasing, accentuation, dynamics, timing, and grace. But those are the nuts and bolts of the beautiful works of art whose lines you imagine. In the end, it’s about lines.

I would love to be there in your listening room to hear the LP being played...because no matter what, once the sound has been digitized and transmitted via your computer to the Internet, then compressed by YT and decompressed on playback...it is no longer the same sound that you hear coming from your speakers when you play it on your hi-fi system.

The faster movs are even faster than Argerich and likewise impose romantic phrasing. However he better keeps Bach’s glassy objectivity in view while cultivating a more percussive and ravishingly precise style, somewhat in contrast to his natural technique; much intelligence and creativity here. Understands Bach’s emotional language; very impressive and no question of the overall conception being completely committed and serving the music.

Oh, you do realize that this recording was/is digitized and compressed then decompressed at the replay stage (when you and I listen to it here on YT), don't you? The vinyl sound you idolize can be heard only when you listen to an LP being played on a record player in front of you. Even radio broadcasts are no longer analog...everything is digital now.

Notes for myself: Suite No 3 begins at 28:20 Suite No 3, Henle and Schirmer editions end at 31:04, Pogorelich repeats from that point to bar 33, al fine. Is there an edition with this notated? Maybe del segno [bar 33] al fine? Or is this Ivo’s own addition? However he came to it, I like it this way. If anyone knows of such an edition, please do tell.

Because the concert world is stupid and "demands" more virtuosic/bravura music. It's a huge loss for us as a culture that young talent can't spend any meaningful time with Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Scarlatti because they have to play Liszt and Rachmaninoff flawlessly by the time they turn 16 to have hopes of an international career. Sad

I agree with other comments - too fast. No doubt he his highly skilled, and it's probably great fun to play it this way! But I guess Bach is so much more open to interpretation than other composers
