Hard agree on the s-video point. I got s-video cables for my N64 (the best it can do, stock) and it looked so much better. (I still ended up modding it with eTim/Borti's board for the deblur). Also, hard agree on cost of an RGB setup. I started at a higher cost, because I got a Framemeister before the OSSC was a thing, but even knocking $200 off the cost of that, the price of a full RGB set up is massive. Between mods, cables, and a gscartsw, it's well over $500, not including whichever device you choose as your upscaler. For me, it was worth it, but for a lot of folks, the RetroTINK is more than adequate.

It's a shame that there isn't a cheaper alternative to the Retrotink 2X Pro which does more or less the same thing (aside from the Retrotink 2X Classic, which is out of production now). The 2X Pro is still rather expensive for most people. The 2X Mini could make sense for a lot of people, but it's also out of production, and it was still very expensive, especially for a device which is basically a 2X Classic with no component input. A lot of older consoles support RGB/ component output by default, and component cables aren't necessarily THAT expensive.

I think it should rather be called a line-doubler, as scaling has this sort of bad stigma associated with a scaler's processing. This implies perceptible input lag, whereas line-doubling is widely known as a zero-lag inducing solution. Scaling typically uses buffering, which most of the time is the main source of input lag from this sort of device. The RT2X(P) has no framebuffer, which is definitely a plus.
@Izquierda4 жыл бұрын
A framebuffer is not necessarily bad, it can be a plus for instance to avoid video drop outs when the source changes resolution. Ideally we want something with a framebuffer that can be turned on and off to suit the needs of each case. The OSSC Pro is planned to have this.

I bought this recently, and mine did not come with the micro usb cable which is OK because I had a boatload of those kicking around. I promptly added it to my setup as follows NES | SNES | N64 | Gamecube | Wii | PS2 > Composite Switchbox > Retrotink > HDMI Switch box > Television I quickly learned that my old unpowered composite switch box needs an upgrade as it is almost 20 years old and is starting to fail on input 1 wherre I had the NES connected and it does not currently like to produce sound on that input with the NES plugged into it (I tested the NES direct to tink and the sound was fine). I will upgrade that as soon as I can When I do I plan to look for one that also supports S video so I could run S-video out for Svideo capible consoles. Since only one of Composite / Component on the tink can be used at once I swapped my Wii Component cables to my secondary wii setup and I also swapped out my unmodified NES-101 (Toploader) for my childhood NES-001 placing the top loader in my "Only works with CRT's setup" which is for use with Zapper, Power Glove and R.O.B. Titles. The nice thing I discovered was switching my TV to 4:3 for retro tink the TV automatically went back to 16:9 when presented with such a signal on one of the other inputs of the HDMI switch box such as my Nintendo Switch and went back to 4:3 when the tink input was selected. I will have to change manually in the settings when playing Wii games as it doesn't seem to interpret this change in the same way. so Once i get a newer updated Composite Switch box I should have a much better setup but I want to wait a little bit on that while I research which is a good one to get.

@ians_parks4 жыл бұрын
The retrotink2x doesnt accept 480p video. The majority of the ps2 library is 480i only so not a huge loss. You can still use a ps2 with component cables on a retrotink2x, itll just be either 480i passthrough or 480i bob deinterlaced depending what you have it set to. I wouldn't recommend the retrotink2x for the wii or gamecube. With the wii your options are limited but you could always get a component to hdmi converter that retains a 480p image and doesnt do any scaling which would introduce lag and possible mess with the color and brightness. Normally i wouldnt recommend hyperkin cables as they are often complete garbage but the wii one specifically doesnt require external power and it doesnt scale the image to 720p unlike every other cable of theirs. Its just straight 480p with no weird visual hiccups. For the gamecube id recommend getting a GCvideo device. You'd need to make sure you have a compatible gamecube with the digital out port. As far as which device id recommend the Carby. Its far cheaper then the overpriced Eon GCHD and functionally they are identical since they use the same GCvideo software. The only difference is you dont have dual output on the Carby. As far as component cables hd retrovsion cables pair very well with the retrotink2x, id recommend using those with systems such as the snes, genesis, saturn, ps1 etc.

What's the difference between using this upscaler and simply changing the aspect ratio on an HDTV itself? Also, is this a game changer? Doesn't an emulator always display best visuals? (not concerned with dusting off old consoles)
@ians_parks4 жыл бұрын
Its less about visuals and more so about compatability with hdtvs and having a lagless solution for your retro consoles. It specifically linedoubles to 480p so 240p consoles are more widely recognized by hdtvs. Your tv's own internal scaler wasnt design with retro consoles in mind so its liable to misinterpret the signal as interlaced while also introducing input lag. Assuming you are pairing good cables with the device the image will look great. Just dont go in expecting 1080p.

@CGQuarterly4 жыл бұрын
The Tink will take the component signal from your HDRetroVision cable and upscale 480i to 480p, but many HDTV's (including mine) already display 480i signals properly, so it would be useful for the smoothing filter and for times when you're playing 240p games, but otherwise not really needed. I am not familiar with the Pound cable, so I can't comment on that, and I've never tried hooking a PSP up to a TV with a video cable. Should work just fine with the Tink, though.

Love this and all, but all this hassle is just too much for me. I think it all still looks ok on a CRT. If the game isn't interlaced, and is in 60 FPS, it is usually ok.

@@TheAlphaOmegaX3 Retrotink only takes up to 480i. 480p doesn't work It's meant to be a simple solution for people who want to plug their systems as is to HDMI TVs and don't want to bother with RGB. S-video is good enough imo.
@TheAlphaOmegaX34 жыл бұрын
@@seraph4581 Yep. I was saying it can output 480p at best. That's all. I'm thinking of getting me one to hook to my OSSC. I'd like to use NES with composite and N64 with S-Video. Then use OSSC to output (yes line triple) 720p on both.
@jublington4 жыл бұрын
Honestly for the minor price difference you may as well just buy an OSSC which can output up to like 5x with no lag, and even has scart and vga inputs.
@traviscombs69474 жыл бұрын
Yeah but his point at the end of the video is, even though the OSSC device itself is in a similar price bracket, the total cost of a setup to get new cables for all of your systems makes that route substantially more expensive. OSSC doesn't do composite or S-Video.
@RediscoveringRetro4 жыл бұрын
I suppose it depends on where you live. Here in the UK, scart is basically the norm, we don't use s-video or component that much. Compare that to the US, where, I believe, scart is not that common? I know there's the cost of RGB modding a machine if it doesn't output it as standard, but yeah, I wouldn't go with device because no scart.

@vivisect534 жыл бұрын
Stop pushing the cheap $5 cables, they are a lot of times shitty. And what about systems that top out at composite or s video, or systems that are RF only and use a VCR to do composite. With some those are the best signals you will get, except maybe in a few cases when you need expensive mods. This is a far better option for me since I have about 15 systems an OSSC would be completely useless for. So even if I had an OSSC this is still be a very useful device.

Just so everyone knows, for anybody that has purchased any RetroTink products at the beginning of October, RetroTink had recently made significant changes to their store policies. See their site on the wayback machine for October 1st at web.archive.org/web/20200927124412/www.retrotink.com/store-policies for details. The changes include a refusal to take returns on RetroTink Minis, and that returns are now the customers responsibility. Please note the change if you are considering buying their product, and if you bought it on our before October 1st, you can rely on the aforementioned link for proof of what the policies were before the changes.

The retrotink2x also supports rgb assuming you are using hd retrovision component cables. The rad2x bypasses the need for extra cabling tho.

I feel like I should buy a 2x non-pro just in protest of scan lines. It's a limitation of the technology, not a feature.
@furiousfox77124 жыл бұрын
Keith Everson Well tbh it might be a limitation but a very beneficial one at that, scan lines help reduce image noises that composite consoles only such as the NES display. I have a crt and play castlevania with in composite, bought a Retrotink2x pro and was very horrified by the look of composite without scan line filters , so I put on scanlines and it is so much better! As for the genesis and snes I don’t use scanline since I got component and same thing for the N64 with s video.
