Thank you for finally reviewing my personal Game of the Year. Everything about this game is so perfect. The tight control. The fantastic graphics. The phenomenal level designs. The fun bosses. But what made it soar to the top, for me at least, was the soundtrack. Never in my life have I loved a game's soundtrack so much. Kingdom Hearts comes close, but Tropical Freeze is just ridiculous in how good its score is. But most of all... I had genuine, heartfelt FUN with this game. I haven't had true fun with a game in ages, but Tropical Freeze was a magical experience for me. I know people wanted another Metroid, but it's my hope that people will get over it and come to appreciate the shining jewel Retro has crafted here. It's a game I don't think I could ever sell because I'll want to keep coming back to it simply to enjoy it. The Wii U may not be selling like it should, but it has an incredible library of truly solid titles, Tropical Freeze being one of the absolute best. Thanks for reviewing it, Derek. I'll stop raving like a maniac in the comments now.

Andrew Koloshinsky i agree about it being the best game we have ever played. although there are so many games in the industry that there just might be one to top Tropical Freeze. perhaps there is, perhaps there isn't. either way, we both still got to play a truly amazing game.

I'm not ashamed to admit that the Grassland Groove level made me tear up because of how beautiful it was. The music and the scenery were just perfect. (Yes, I was already in my late 20's when that game came out. And no, usually I'm not a Weichei like that. I don't know what it is, but there are only three games that make me emotional like that - and I have been playing games since the og Game Boy. The other two games are Final Fantasy 9 and Symphony of the Night.)

The Elsa joke - it had to be done. The hilarious live action segments, mixed in with the usual articulate reviews that Derek and his Emma Watson loving-tone bestows makes this one of my favourite CHR Undertow reviews ever. The skit was more than worth the wait, take a bow sir!

I got this game 3 days ago. If you are on the fence about getting it because you are a bit tired of 2d or whatever you should still get it. It's brilliant and the music ranges from good to excellent.

joesatmoes Other M wasn't THAT bad was it? I mean I enjoyed it, maybe not as much as the Prime games but it was still good....to an extent. It did baffle me sometimes with how lame the storytelling was.

kbutta01 Well, I think Retro is better suited for a Prime game, and if there was a Metroid game we were to get, I'd rather it be that one. But I think Miyamoto said that they are actually working on a 3D and a 2D Metroid game, so hopefully the 3D one means Prime (and hopefully it's coming to Wii U).

My cousin works at Retro in Texas. Fatasses eat barbeque every weekend. Lol Anyways. He told me that they started working on a new game in September. Almost a year already! Which is why DKC TF was delayed from the Holidays until February. They wanted to get a headstart on their new title and were looking to hire some new character/boss artists and 3D graphic designers for some new concept thing if I remember correctly. My cousin worked on MP3, DKC R, Mario Kart 7, and now DKC TF. Lol. Can't tell me about their new game though. We should see a new game from Retro at next years E3. Quite possibly a new Metroid since he says David Wise is taking a break. :)

I feel like I need both of them. I need Derek for his analyzing prowess delivered with passionate gusto and Mark for his manic off-the-wall perhaps Hunter S. Thompson-esque observations. TJ is also good for most other things. I like how his reviews never seem to have a proper ending, a lot like some of the crazier Adventure Time episodes.

Retro is like Rare in a sense. They make great games and push the graphical limits of the system more than Nintendo. The fur effect in this game is amazing! Also, the first two Metroid primes look almost as good as a wii game! And that game was on the gamecube!

Retro wishes they could be as good as Rare. Also, the Gamecube and Wii are about equal in power, so it's not really impressive that any GC game looks "as good" as a Wii game. That's just par for the course. And if you think Retro's DK games push the limits of their platforms more than Rare did on the NSES, you really don't know much about what "pushing the limit" of graphics really means across the console generations. Any 2D game can run beautifully on a console that's two or generations into the advent of 3D gaming. To not run well, these games would have had been developed by complete idiots. Making a 2D game on Wii is the opposite of pushing limits. It's conservative and safe. 2D is SNES territory.

Derek has the most badass hair I have ever seen. He's like a less-hideous Dave Mustaine. Speaking of hair...I have to admit that I am not entirely thrilled that they brought back the rocket barrel levels for this game. My hair thinned out by about 60% while playing those levels in the last game.

With the exception of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Tropical Freeze is my favorite video game of all time. It's a masterpiece. And the time trials with video uploads are even more addictive than the main game. Time running DKC is an art form.

I've played this, and I bought DKCR around three years ago. I can't put my finger on it, but there's something that the originals had that these are missing. I'm not an overly nostalgic person when it comes to games, either.

Dr.Beef I agree. I try to play through Tropical Freeze, but..it just seems more difficult to me. And the play control, isnt..the same I guess. I can go back and play Diddys Kong Quest, and fall in love again, and again. ANd even though that game is challenging, its nowhere near as hard as the new one is, for me anyhow..
