Gauntlet II review. Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Gauntlet II for the Game Boy developed and published by Atari.
Gauntlet returns for more hacking and slashing on the original Game Boy! Gauntlet II is a 1990 release that keeps much of the original’s gameplay in tact, but it also makes some subtle changes and additions that give the game its own feel. Players choose one of four Tolkien-like characters and slash their way through enemy-filled dungeons. Gauntlet’s claim to fame has always been its overwhelming amount of enemies and multiplayer, two things that are more difficult to achieve on the Game Boy, but Gauntlet II is still a decent handheld adaptation. Gauntlet II features single-player and local multiplayer play.

Nice review Derek. I understand what you are saying but in context of when this game was released it was a darned impressive portable version. Slow down was par for the course for many Game Boy games and, in my opinion, did not ruin the experience. The version to own was Gauntlet IV on the Nomad for Gauntlet on the go (if only for a couple of hours and a ton of batteries!!!). Also the Atari Lynx got a very interesting version of Gauntlet (The Third Encounter) with a good selection of characters. Maybe you should look at these versions too.

You know what is better than gauntlet? Dungeon Explorer on the Turbografx 16! It's basically Hudson Soft's version of Gauntlet except with better graphics, way more characters, with music and with 5 player support! C'mon admit it... Hudson > Atari

***** you can also try these emulators called Hu-Go or Ootake. And yes Dungeon Explorer on the TG16 is awesome and they did a remake on the DS which was surprisingly good!

One thing Derek didn't touch on, is the audio samples seem to be messed up if not playing on anything but a Game Boy, GB Pocket, or Super Game Boy. Guessing the doubled clock speed for GBC screws with the voice playback.
