I am a 70 year old woman whose landlord tried to evict illegaly. Real estate has recently created such a windfall for landlords, they realized double rental profits where within reach...if they could find a way to oust their present tenants. Luckily, Canada's Landlord Tenant Board protects tenant rights from unscrupulous greedy landlords. After a year of having unrelented repeated attempts of takeback of my sweet 550 sq. ft. little apt. I just can see your concept become a reality here in our country as weĺl. So many would have dreams come true finding peace and contenment in an ICON home. Jason your iconic 3-D homes would be much needed here. Collingwood, Ontario. This may never be realized for me in my lifetime, but for others, the sanctuary of a home for $4000 at base material cost is ingenius and affordable. Although purchasing land / lot is a consideration. You have my deepest gratitude wnd respect because you are goingbto change lives...one home at a time. ❤🏠❤

I really love this concept. Being in the industry for 30yrs I see it has great potential. Affordable housing is just a phrase, like the other comment made we are still under the thumb of corrupt governments and corrupt industry who controls the products we require to build new homes. Until that changes we have big challenges ahead. It’s a step in the right direction. Living in Canada, our engineering requirements make it tough to build such structures at this time but I see there are ways to overcome it. Other countries with less stringent building standards and lower income areas, this could be a win?? Costly? Who knows. I’ve seen claims of 5k to print a small home? It does not explain what that includes? Considering it being new tech, I would imagine the costs to completion to be much higher. Most developing nations run around 60-100$/sqft. I will be keeping a close eye on future developments, thanks for sharing!

@datatwo74054 жыл бұрын
Less stringent building standards? Really? What, the current manner of warehousing poor people in tiny two-car garage size apartments is too extravagant? I understand you're from Canada, but considering the U.S. population is 3rd behind China and India and has increased by over 130 million since the 1960s the market should be quite large and profit potential abounds. Being that the rate of poverty and substandard income has increased exponentially since then, this kind of thinking is right up the American alley, and if the big boys can refrain from being too greedy the U.S. should look like a tiny house park from sea to shining sea in less than a generations time.
@SugarRay24 жыл бұрын
Data Two developing countries do have less stringent standards. Have you seen how houses are built in India or Vietnam compared to the US in general? In developing countries people need jobs, this machine will take away jobs.
@grandvizir4 жыл бұрын
Data Two you can’t build new appartement complexes in Europe if they don’t have fire/water hazard safety build and plenty of stuff like that, which increase the time, materials and price. In my country you have to build it for wheelchairs ( not an option ), meaning a huge bathroom, kitchen, room and corridors. All that kind of stuff is not required in a lot of countries. He probably meant it in the opposite way, not despising the 3rd world but the first one, where you probably couldn’t build that because of safety requirements. Rice in the walls, yeah, how to start a fire 101. Great stuff but will never be taken seriously until they drop the money saving stuff. This will work in the future, no doubt next generation won’t build without this kind of machines , but for huge stuff, not for ecological poor housing or particulars, at least at market price, the construction business is way too huge to let that slide.
@grandvizir4 жыл бұрын
@Leicester City F.C. Chiming in from the residential construction industry here. IMO, robotic 3D construction is almost certain to disrupt the construction industry like nothing has been disrupted before. My industry is one of the most antiquated and slow moving industries in existence and as a result, we continue to face ever greater challenges from labor, materials, land development etc. Barring another economic collapse, the cost of residential dwellings will continue its dramatic ascent while wages stay flat....making housing become ever more unaffordable. As a result, the companies showcased in this video, along with others like Katerra, Entekra, Plant Prefab etc will step in and take over, radically changing the look of future homes and the types of people involved in their construction. Mark my words, the investment opportunity in these companies will be staggering as the residential housing industry takes a warp speed leap from "prehistoric" to "Star Trek" seemingly overnight.

As the cost of land grows in value at the same time as the population increases the need is for good quality high rise buildings, as much as I love this technology I can't help but think the dream has blinded the tech firms from the real need. For me the winner here is the block laying machine, that is until the printers can prove their worth as multi story builders.

There are many sides to homelessness. Those who live in destitution, those who are homeless, these provide for a great need. Also, these are houses that can be owned. Property gives you a serious asset, even if it's only worth 25000 to 35000 all told, that's meaningful. Economic displacement from lack of housing deficits is different. For that we need to simply build more and more. That requires cities to get their house in order with zoning and more people to simply want to be construction workers. What's essential is that we need them all. Just one won't do. Too many people argue over doing one or the other, we need all kinds of actions and innovations.

Interesting information. Shame none of these are currently commercially available for general use. Once it is done, and updated to where you can do multiple story structures, this would be ideal to have on a homestead where you could print the buildings you need as you need them, and at a much lower cost. The printer that used the local soil with discarded agricultural waste would be ideal for this. It would be interesting to test the thermal effects and long term viability. I currently reside in southern California but trying to relocate to southern Utah where I want to setup a niche farm, along with a veteran service organization to assist homeless veterans get back on their feet, and having the ability to create housing as needed would be ideal for this situation, as we could build as we need them.
@sspiker4 жыл бұрын
The last LITERALLY works with non-profits... their whole purpose is affordable housing. So maybe they would work with more non-profits? However, it would be senseless to make this information "free' because not everyone could afford to build or utilize them, and those that could would be companies for profit... sadly. They are also working on multistory homes and can do up to 2000sqft last I saw.
@oakld3 жыл бұрын
I think thaat 3D printed houses will never be cheaper than those assembled from prefabricated concrete slabs. You get a same result FASTER and CHEAPER. And the technology is here, still it's for various reasons not the top choice for small housing (but rules multi-story building). I'm not saying 3D printing is useless, but sometimes a common sense is lost in the hype.

I have much less optimism for 3D printed houses. I'm not saying they won't find their place on the market, but the enthusiasm is overhyped. Here in Europe, you have so many ways to build a good house. How could be the 3D printed concrete house cheaper, than the one made from prefabricated concrete slabs, for example? Especially talking about affordable housing, where you're going to build number of same designs at a time. Pouring time is really small compared to printing and they can assemble half a dozen houses in two days from prefabricated parts (outer walls typically with insulation) a time required just to unpack, calibrate and set and then pack the printer (printing time excluded). Another thing is, where's the insulation? Even with hollow walls, which are probably comparable to usual hollow bricks, you still need to add a lot of insulation. Curvy wals are nice, but you wouldn't like the job insulating them (or paying for the job). But as I said, I'm not against it, the technology will surelly find it's use, with more significant share in some climats and for some type of buildings.
