It was 1977...There was a hippie trail land route which connected Nepal and India to Turkey via Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran... And from Turkey crossing the bosphorus strait by ferry and then through south and central Europe to Western European countries. It was a famous land route used by American and European hippies to travel by land to India and Nepal cheaply....The border control and customs was lax and not strict like today. The hippie trail closed in 1979 due to Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the Islamic revolution in Iran.

For someone wondering why this story has never been made into a movie, the reason is again caste. The pan indian film industry which is otherwise called Bollywood is occupied by upper castes( more than 90% of the film directors, actors, and actresses belong to the upper caste) and they never ever bothered to make films based on stories about lower castes.
