This dance originated from one of the top ten famous paintings in China, "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains". This painting was painted by Wang Ximeng (1096 AD - 1117 AD), a painter in the Northern Song Dynasty, when he was 18 years old. Unlike black and white ink paintings,the painting is named after it was painted with azurite-green mineral pigments. The choreographer abstracted the green colors in the picture of thousands of miles of rivers and mountains and abstracted them into a female character. This group dance is to express the concept of mountains.

For this dance ( according to the interview given by the Joint Directors & Choreographers [with my limited knowledge of Chinese, this is what I gathered] They came up with the dance moves a few mths before the Gala.At that time, the accompanied music was also not finalised until 2 wks before the Gala,they were informed to perform and intensified practise began. For this dance they wanted to use the backbone(spine) as the core of their movements[so there are no gadgets & props used] Challenges they encountered were ultra smooth floor which are LED PLATFORM cos their studio floor is solid wood panel,making it an easier gripe for their feet. The venue also has limited space for group practise. @Viễn-Phương In order for the dancers to perform in total calmness, they abstain from interacting with other ppl. Calmness is the priority of this dance to succeed. [I think they succeeded cos I felt the smooth calmness yet with strong undertone of a tough character when the dancers shrug the sleeves to depict anger and frustration in the Traditional Chinese Opera.]
Chinese culture is one of the richest cultures in the world, indeed.

These dancers here are probably the best of the best from millions of hopefully who tried to be in their place. All of these dances are probably 1 in a million.The amount of work they put in to reach there must be insane and also the passion and dedication. This is why you dont see anyone in the. group that feels like they are just giving 90 percent ;they are all giving 100 percent of the best 0.1 percent this is technically a million dreams behind this dance when you think about that in itself its quite a beautiful thought..

Hello China and all Chinese people, a big thank you to all of you for this gift you have made for humanity. I have no word in my mother tongue, French, to describe this artistic masterpiece. All the feelings and effects that flood my body, I'm hypnotized, the days of the Lunar New Year watching the live, and still a year later. I can watch it over and over without getting tired of it. In 34 years of existence it is the most beautiful living work of art I have seen in my life, I take the time to leave for the first time in my life a comment on youtube. Here we have a masterpiece of Chinese culture, a piece of art. Out of all the live performances during the Spring Festival (Chinese Lunar New Year) gala show, which I have watched for 6 years, this is definitely the most beautiful performance. In particular, I saw masterpieces on site in China, among the most impressive: two "Tang Dynasty" performances in Xī'ān 西安, Shǎnxī 陕西 province, or a show by 张艺谋 Zhāng Yìmóu on West Lake (西湖 Xīhú) in 杭州 Hángzhōu province of 浙江 Zhèjiāng , also a performance of 杨丽萍 Yánglí Píng in 昆明 Kūnmíng 云南 Yúnnán province which had marked me. But among all these shows, the 2022 Spring Festival is impressive, it stands out. As someone else here said, it's both simple and complex, it's both ancient and modern. It is a very complex mixture and a fusion between history dance music painting calligraphy poetry philosophy. The artistic team manages to bring to life the painting by 王希孟 Wáng Xīmèng entitled 千里江山圖 Qiānlǐ jiāngshān tú (A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains). Li = ancient Chinese unit for measuring distance. This artist was born during the Sòng dynasty 宋朝 Sòng cháo (960-1279) under the reign of the great Emperor 宋徽宗 Sòng huīzōng. Both had a very sad life during a turbulent period in Chinese history. 王希孟 Wáng Xīmèng produced his only work of art at the age of 18, in 1113, a 12 meter long, brightly colored silk painting (very expensive for the time). The CHINESE painting style is 山水 shān shuǐ, landscapes are painted on silk (this technique was invented in China since the 5th century, Japan did not exist, "japan fans"please do not talk nonsense .This painting can be seen in 北京 Běijīng at 故宫博物院 Gùgōng Bówùyùan, one of the greatest artist of China then died prematurely at the age of 23. This painting almost disappeared forever several times, notably during the Jurchen invasions 女真 Nǚzhēn (Wars between the Jin and Song dynasties ), and also during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the painting was lost circulating in flea markets, after the chaos that the Japanese had created in China since 1894 (First Sino-Japanese War). During Qīng dynasty 大清 the painting belonged to the personal collection of Manchu Emperor 乾隆帝 Qiánlóng (1711 - 1799). Taoism is true, the barbarians of the north have become fine amateurs of painting on silk? For information the Manchus are the descendants of the Jurchens mentioned above. Emperor 宋徽宗 Sòng huīzōng saw the potential of 王希孟 Wáng Xīmèng and took him personally as a student. Emperor 宋徽宗 Sòng huīzōng had a sad but fascinating story, he is one of the greatest Chinese artists, he loved all the arts more than anything else: music, painting, calligraphy, poetry, ceramics, etc. He could spend days watching birds and paint them. As you can guess politics and war were not his passions, so he was the last Emperor of the Sòng 宋 dynasty, the Jurchen 女真 Nǚzhēn one day captured his capital and eventually deported him and his entire court children all his concubines in Manchuria , in the great Siberian cold of the 黑龙江 Hēilóngjiāng province, it is well written by Chinese historians that his end life was miserable and that he died a broken man. The traditional Chinese musical instrument that stands out is the gǔzhēng 古筝, an instrument that dates from the Warring States Period 战国时代 Zhànguó Shídài (475-221 BCE). The touch of modernity is brought by a classical European instrument: the violins. The hairstyles as well as the traditional clothes are 唐福 Táng fú (or 汉服 Hànfú dating from the 唐 Táng dynasty 618 - 907 AD). I give you my little opinion: you have to see Chinese civilization as a continuity, there is no beginning (birth) nor end (death). This binary vision is very Western and Christian. The concept of copy/copying does not exist in China, it must be understood that for millennia copying imitating the greatest artists / paintings / calligraphers / poets is a must, and that there is no harm in copying . This artistic masterpiece in 2022 is therefore a living continuation and refinement of the work of 王希孟 Wáng Xīmèng produced in 1113: we see the painting appear as it goes along as well as scroll. Try to display the painting on your computer you will not be able to visualize it you will have to zoom and drag it because it is so big. The sensual dancers to the rhythm of the gǔzhēng 古筝 are gradually incorporated into the painting as if it had been painted like mountains and rivers. This complex work of art dating from the year 2022 is a tribute to the ancient Chinese civilization: we can travel in time from the Warring States 战国时代 Zhànguó Shídài to present-day China (People's Republic of China) via the 唐 Táng and 宋 Sòng dynasties. The homage to the ancestors, which has always been so important in this country, the cradle of Confucianism 儒家 Rújiā, is paid. Confucius 孔子 Kǒng Zǐ would be proud of the long road traveled and the continuity of the middle empire 中国 Zhōngguó.A big congratulations to the Chinese civilization: I think that the Chinese of today as of yesterday and in particular the first author 王希孟 Wáng Xīmèng and the Emperors 唐高祖 Táng Gāozǔ, 唐太宗 Táng Tàizōng , and thoses who was able to touched this silk scroll 宋徽宗 Sòng huīzōng ,乾隆帝 Qiánlóng , all have tears in eyes seeing this performance and the long journey made. Thanks from France. love you . 中国女婿

@@Indian_gae_boii Not Vietnam. Saying Vietnam’s culture is from China’s influence is like an insult. to Chinese culture. If you know Vietnam history, then you would know that Vietnam didn’t use Chinese culture until the late early 18 century. After they drove the Ming soldiers out of Vietnam, Vietnam’s Le emperor of Le dynasty stated to imitate and adopt Chinese civil system, legal system, Chinese names and surnames and then all Chinese culture. The Le emperor first forced people in northern region of the country to adopt Chinese culture, and then slowly spread southward following territory expansion.

@@Indian_gae_boii In fact Korean culture and Japanese culture are so much more closer to China than Vietnamese culture. Korea and Japan were in contact with and influenced by Chinese culture more than a thousand years earlier and soon per than Vietnam. Whereas Vietnam did not send people to learn Chinese culture like Korea and Japan. Even if you were an emperor of China during one of its former dynasties in its 5,000 history, you would not have witnessed an amazing artistic performance such as this one. This performance is so symbolic of where China is today. The dancers' simple elegance, grace, harmony of movements, power, flexibility, cultural awareness, and unity of purpose spoke volumes through their beautiful performance. It is so beautifully performed and powerfully expressed the feelings and emotions of the culture in our times. The performers had such incredible control and flexibility to bend their bodies so far back that it symbolizes how China has been able to bend but never break over its history. The harmony and unity of the performance also was impressive and symbolizes how China is aligned with its leadership with a 95% approval rating of its government. This support is shown in the battle against Covid as well as withstanding the lies and China bashing from countries that want to destabilize China. Through it all, the beauty, harmony, and peace of the Chinese civilization comes powerfully through the performance as it takes its place of leadership in the world today. Bravo indeed.

Oh, that shoulder sinking at 5:12 takes my breath away! Such delicate choreography to such details! It's like a sigh of the painter himself and the mountains ... and then builds up more emotions that follow! The choreographer is a master and so is the dance performer! And this is a true masterpiece!
I love the sound of traditional Chinese string instruments and drums, really makes me immerse into the world of ancient China.

i love the way the choreography and music were made to correlate with the backdrop. the precision of their timing created a sense of collectivism and togetherness that really lines up with the country's mentality. at first, i found their spacing to be peculiar but slowly i realized that i was watching them shape a landscape right before my eyes. each dancer displayed a precision that alluded to a complete sense of control over the form of their bodies. and just beneath the elegance of their forms, there was calculated intention in their manner of coordination as well. from my perspective, the nature of their initial movements as one big group showed them pulling up enormous mounds of earth from the sea together before splitting it up into smaller piles. some clearly began carving out sharp cliff sides and rocky mountain faces while others began shaping the rolling valleys separating these giants. the flowing of their garment sleeves mimicked the fluid way in which water would flow in rivers and creeks or how a breeze would run wild when released into a seemingly endless valley. there was motivation that echoed in the force of each step and power that radiated from each stroke of the arm. pieced together, it all showed exactly how each shift was meant to sculpt the landscape and therefore change the painting behind them. the contemporary, digital addition of color to the ancient black and white painting mirrors our historical change from b/w to color TV. that, combined with the gentle ending of the choreography, just added an overall sense of completion to the story by creating an extension into the modern day where we are now. it's almost as if it was saying, "this is the story so far, but where it goes from here, now, is still up to you."

Excellent vivid description. You've got the exact message of the poetic painting that the choreographers want to send to audience and using human dancers to paint the landscape based on the real 900+ years old masterpiece painting. Wow. You are really good to be able to see the purpose of the dance/movements using your good imagination while many people cannot see that. At the minute 3:33, different dancers moving up and down out of sync describe different mountains with shorter and taller shape, either during formation or the formation been completed. Some people cannot understand why the weird hair or sudden quick hard moves and gentle at the same time. The hair piece helps audience to imagine the dancers acted like the strong hard rocky mountain, and their soft flowing train and long sleeves are like flowing water. The dancers dance between the gentle and quick jerky movements with gentle flowing dresses are exactly what the masterpiece of "Thousand Miles of River and Mountain" poetic painting is.

And actually the real painting is not in black and white but in blue and green colors like in background of stage in video. This masterpiece painting is currently sitting in national museum in Beijing. You can see this real painting of Thousand Miles of Mountain And River in the Beijing museum.

I am in awe of this art. It's a masterpiece inspired from an ancient Chinese masterpiece. One of the reasons I love Chinese culture is in the aspect of arts, which conveys narratives of life (dao, tao) and one's being in harmony with nature. Being harmonious with nature can help in the proper flow of life force, spiritual energy resulting to great wellness and longevity. Many of the Chinese arts and teachings have exemplified that -- harmony of life with nature and the elements. The dance performance is one of many and by watching it, I am mesmerized and at the same time enlightened by the flow of energy of the kinetic movements and also the sound of the music accompaniment. It's not something I can freely discuss here as its profundity can't be comprehended by mere mortals. Do you think this performance is only elegant and superb? I believe it's more than that.

This is as close as you get to the definition of elegance and beauty in the context of cultural China that lasts for centuries. It is one of the best performances that connect the present to the past, nowadays people to their ancestors. The dance is accurately executed with a perfect balance of being emotionally enthusiastic and yet reserved, which is the core of Chinese culture. Kudos to the choreographer, the music composer, and the dance performers. Bravo!

An amazing piece of art. It could be used to define the meaning of the word "sublime" (other comments accurately use words like "awe", "jaw dropping" and "goose bumps"). For me, it also sums up much of what is good about China: remembering long history using cutting-edge technology. Discipline striving to achieve excellence while remaining delicate. Teamwork. I very much hope the current tensions with the West can be resolved and excellence like this can be shared without prejudice or political disparagement.
@haniahannslew41083 жыл бұрын
The tensions are created by the west that always want to suppress China for fear of China's growth and back to where China is supposed to be a strong and rich nation in term of culture and economy. In other words, it's racism and arrogance from de west.
@johnie49573 жыл бұрын
Love your choice of the word "sublime"! :) The tensions between China and the west will go away when the communist party is out of the office or at least the current leader, an extreme Maoist who knows nothing but being ignorant and arrogant, steps down. China and U.S. were allies before the communist stole the country. What you see in this performance is the real cultural China passed down to us from our ancestors. China is NOT the China presented by the "Wolf warrior" diplomats around the world who claim they represent China(they don't, nobody votes for them). What you see in this performance carries the real spirit of China, enthusiastic, calm, and peaceful.
@bilibasket79513 жыл бұрын
@@johnie4957 nonsense. Read history first before posting ridiculous anti China comment. You totally ignore the fact that foreign invasions from the west and jpn forced China to open its doors, to swallow opium, to change its culture to accept abrahamic religions, and then looted China's treasure and exploiting its poor people. Instead of blaming the west and jpn, you ridiculously accuse communism.
