RIP LKY, founder of Singapore who raised it from a 3rd to 1st world country within 40 years. When Deng Xiaoping visited Singapore right after Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution, China held poverty rate of 80%. Deng was amazed at the advancement of Singapore. Lee Kuan Yew told Deng "if Singapore can do it, China has no excuse not to do better. You have 5,000 years of civilization, millions of highly educated citizens with long line of high intellectuals. All we have were landless peasants." After he provoked and challenged Deng, Deng went back to his dinner silently. Deng returned to China later and had the famous "white cat, black cat, only the cat that catches mice is a good cat" speech, and turned China towards open market economy. The rest is history. 40 years later, the poverty rate is merely 10% (as defined by national poverty line), and China became the largest economy in the world by PPP in 2015. There is no doubt that China (and in turn, the United States and the global economy) would be much different today if it wasn't for Deng's 1978 visit to Singapore. Thanks to Mr. Lee who provoked Deng. The great mind enlightened each other at the perfect time. I wish someone of similar stature can talk some sense into some other certain world leaders. RIP Mr. Lee

China has a very big potential. China is like a massive dam that when you close, you are wasting the dam’s ability of generating power. But when you open it, it can gives power to millions of people. It is proved by Deng Xiaoping. Before the era of western colonization, China is always the world’s no.1 super power. Not western nation. Mao Zedong closes China, wasting it’s potential. Deng Xiaoping saves China. Now, Xi Jinping continues Deng’s great work.

That made subsequent openings of floodgates that imported so many foreigners and made Singaporeans unhappy with this. Job , culture and mindset..changed. some even says from 3rd world to 1st world back to 3rd world again lol..well also everything is so controlled in the media that they want what they want you to know. And nothing beyond that. And some of them (those pioneers) are slienced and branded to leave singapore (some are living in exile in Thailand or Malaysia)..that many people do not know or maybe knows little..So you need to hear from those. Theres 2 sides to a story. There is a documentary by tan pin pin - to singapore with love- but was banned in sg as it is said to contain views that is distorted(so they say). But whatever it is, it's up to the people to decide and see for themselves not the government telling us what is ok to watch or not. This sounds so communist that we are not much different from china or north korea or Russia.. sometimes people just got to take a step or steps back to see the bigger picture. In many cases just go overseas to real democratic countries (nordic countries as example) to live a few years and view sg politically. It will open your eyes.

@charlesha78408 жыл бұрын
The interview is very good, especially compared with those interviews to Lee by Western journalists. Western journalists are generally biased and keep asking preplaced quesitions (democracy -> prosperity or vice versa) which insist that democracy is the end of history as described by Frnacisco Fukuyama in his book. However, Lee has pointed out many times that you have to think out of the box, Asians, who enjoy a different culture and different history experience, cannot simply adopt western systems. The journalist in this video is keen to know how LEE sees China and if he can provide suggestions to the development of China, he truely cares about his country's future. The Western journalist, on the opposite, only cares about 'democracy' rather than the virtue of a nation.

I think the difference of Asia and the West in regards to democracy is that Asia is pragmatic and it's like "Democracy might be a good thing but If it doesn't work well we'll dump it" while to the West, it's an ideology and it's not a solution that works or doesn't, it's a value, it's a fundamental thing that you would sacrify any other things to protect, it's what the country is built upon, because it's born in the West. And note that neither the West nor Asia consider prosperity as the result of democracy.
@limitlesssky30503 жыл бұрын

@@iluvmusicqwe As a westerner (Denmark) I completely agree. Democracy carries a sort of moral aura where Democracy implicitly = good. A democratic decision, in this mindset, is simply good by default, even though most people wouldn't admit this explicitly, they still think in a way. Lee Kuan Yew is still wrong in 1 aspect though. Chinese communism wasn't homegrown, it was a cultural export of the west along with liberalism, humanitarianism, free tradism, and other western revolutionary ideologies of the 1900 and 2000 century. Lee did what was best, not believing revolutionary propaganda and just look at results. This was basically the same as running a country like a CEO of a publically traded company. However, do not be fooled into believing that Singapore is a model of development. Yes, for such a small country with no natural resources, Singapore is an inspiration. However, upon closer inspection, Singapore has one of the largest income inequality, maybe the highest among developed countries. The gap between the upper middle-class and the lower third is frightening. The problem with countries like Singapore, is that no one in the country dares to speak openly about such issues for fear of repression.

As for so-called degeneracy encountered in youths, I do not find people lapsing into this situation natural, believable, without the explicit actions, of questionable intent, from non-ministerial occupants with actual position to influence matters. I keenly do not find the youths of today, actually partial towards such behaviour, but were rather more likely, actively induced to this state, instead. Certain elements ostensibly under civil service, do possess such means, and DO utilise as such. So...NO... I do not lose faith in inherent nature of youths today. But rather, am highly Fascinated, on how they are Influenced/Shaped/Coerced/Induced/Molded/etc, into Being so. Many people don't understand why China is going after Jack Ma, but if you as a business man, attempts to change or influence how government operates and constantly pushes "996" work style the average people will lose their desire to live and have a life. Just look at Korea and Japan, people facing so much stress from just their daily lives they refuse to get married, have children and do things that are considered normal in almost every where else. Moreover, had China not gone after those real estate moguls how can normal people afford housing there.

LKY's pragmatic attitude: "Does it work, does it not work. If it works, do it. If it doesn't work, change." / His political achievement: "I took this country from a very low base in the third world and in thirty to forty years gradually transformed it into a first world country." / LKY does not follow the political template of the west: "The people have ideas about the west's two parties system - a 1st world parliament must have two parties in a first world country. Their argument is simple, a first world country must have a first world parliament, a first world parliament must have a first world opposition, then you can change, guys. I think if we ever go down the road, I will be very sorry for Singapore."

Imagine if Singapore had significant natural resources. LKY would have taken Singapore top 2 economy in the world for along long time. LKY is top 5 leaders in human history. No leader has taken a tiny territory with 1.6 million people, from a fishing village to top 10 GDP percapita in the world.

Mr LKY not just developed Singapore into a modern country and economically progressed, the growing prosperity also get to trickle down to the masses and low income population instead of just a few well connected individual or family members , unlike many newly independent countries. 🤔

He didnt pull out of Malaysia. He and the people he brought into the federation were kicked out. It was a result of an internal coup against the elected Malaysian leadership by a small group of ultra ethno right wing politicians who have stayed in power since.

8:12 - sharp as always even in old age: "Their argument is simple. A first world country must have a first world parliament. A first world parliament must have first world opposition; then you can change size. I think if we ever go down that road. I'll be very sorry for Singapore." A two or more party government system is not a sure win; a single party government is not a sure fail. A lot of people just can't accept that.

Does China have no democracy? The forms of Western democracy are divided into direct democracy and representative democracy. 1. Direct democracy: People do not need to elect or appoint officials to participate directly in state or community affairs. Direct democracy does not require "one person, one vote to elect political leaders." 2. Representative democracy: The people elect or appoint officials to deal with state or community affairs on behalf of the people. Representative democracy requires "one person, one vote to elect political leaders." "Election" is nothing but a tool to protect the "leadership system." "Election" embodys "representative democracy", but not "direct democracy." Therefore, the absence of "election" does not mean that there is no "democracy". European and American democracy: representative democracy (indirect democracy). Bipartiy or multiparty system of competitive elections. One person, one vote elects political leaders, directly or indirectly. Divided into ruling party and out-party (opposition party). Chinese-style democracy: The Communist Party representing the interests of the overwhelming majority of the people leads the multi-party cooperation and the people's masters of the country (deliberative democracy and democratic centralism) are the direct democracy of China's native growth. Therefore, it is not necessary to elect a "political leader by one person, one vote." The number of Communist Party's members is about 90 million, accounting for 6.7% of the total population of the mainland. Party members are the most outstanding members of all walks of life in various industries, and then form the party's organizations at all levels to represent the interests of the overwhelming majority of the people. Direct elections are carried out at the grassroots level of villages, townships and urban communities, and indirect elections are carried out above the county level. The President of the State and the Premier of the State Council are elected by the National People's Congress (the highest state authority that the people exercise power) in accordance with the talent selection system for selecting talents. Deliberative democracy requires the participation of citizens, mutual exchange and communication on issues such as decision-making and legislation, and finally reach a consensus and mutual help. Democratic centralism and collective deliberation have fully expressed and reflected the wishes and demands of the people. Concentrate on correct opinions and make collective decisions so that the wishes and demands of the people can be implemented and satisfied. Who has the right to speak, who decides the form of democracy. If European-American democracy (representative democracy, one-person, one-vote election of political leaders) is said as the sole criterion for democracy, China has no democracy. If Chinese-style democracy (direct democracy, without one person, one vote, electing political leaders) is said as the sole criterion for democracy, there is no democracy in Europe and the United States. If European and American democracy and Chinese democracy is said as the standard of democracy, both European and American countries and China have democracy.

China biggest weakness is the housing policy. Lee said in one interview that when Singapore broke away from Malaysia, the first task was to hold Singaporeans for the defence of Singapore from it’s neighbours. Without owning a home, Singaporean may not die in defending the land as there was nothing to defend for. With that HDB was borne.
