In order to make it easier for everyone to get to know Chen Jia, I wrote the following very long message, divided into three parts: (1) An Introduction to Chen Jia, (2) Does Chen Jia Deliberately Imitate Teresa Teng in Singing? and (3) Some Selected Songs of Chen Jia. You can read/listen to (by tapping the blue hyperlinks) the full text, or read/listen to the part you are interested in. (1) An Introduction to Chen Jia Chen Jia, born in the 80s, was born and raised in Beijing. Since the age of three, she studied piano with a professor of the Central Conservatory of Music. She passed the piano performance level exam at the age of 13, and at the age of 18 she took the national high school gifted piano students exam of Tsinghua University and obtained the first level (highest level) certificate, and the second place in the national high school students piano exam of Beijing University. At the age of 11, she was admitted to the Juvenile and Women’s Choir affiliated to the China National Symphony Orchestra. During the ten years in the group, she visited USA, Russia, Italy, Japan, HK, Macao and Taiwan many times, and participated in hundreds of performances and won many awards. She graduated from the Dept. of Finance of the University of International Business and Economics, and later went to Germany to study, obtained a master's degree in International Business Management from the University of Hamburg with excellent results, and returned to China to work in Bank of China Securities International Co., Ltd., specializing in A-share listing, a dream job with a high salary and job security. Chen Jia was obsessed with Teresa Teng when she was young. She collected a lot of Teng’s music tapes, CDs, posters, etc. When she learned that Teresa Teng had passed away, she was so sad that she hid in her bedroom and wept grievously for a whole week. Whenever she went to Taiwan, she tried her best to make time to go to pay respects to Teresa Teng. During a business trip in 2011, she held an 1.5 hours online solo concert in her hotel room to commemorate the 16th anniversary of Teresa Teng’s death. She sang a number of Teresa Teng's songs in multiple languages in different periods. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaPGoWyLn9aiha8 She was accidentally discovered by Teresa Teng’s third brother, and was invited to complete the album " 淡淡幽情 2" for Teresa Teng. After considering for more than a year, she finally gave up her well-paid and secured job to complete the album that her idol failed to finish. At the end of 2012, she signed a contract with the Teresa Teng Cultural and Education Foundation (TTCEF), and became a professional singer. Wang Jing, born in 1991, participated in the protagonist selection contest for the musical "Fall in Love with Teresa Teng" in 2010. She stood out from more than 5,000 contestants and acted as the main actress Teresa Teng in the play. She signed a contract with TTCEF in the same year, more than two years earlier than Chen Jia. Wang Jing and Chen Jia were the only two contracted singers of TTCEF. Being a contracted singer of TTCEF signifies the singer's singing skills have been affirmed, and is the singer's honor . Chen Jia is regarded by many as the best inheritor of Teresa Teng’s songs or Teresa’s successor. This is in line with Teresa’s third brother’s choice of her to complete the album "淡淡幽情 2". She is still the only singer who can accurately recite Teresa Teng's songs in various languages in various periods. Chen Jia has a wide singing range. She also covers beautifully songs of other singers in China, HK, Taiwan and Japan, and, in my opinion, some are even better than the original. Not only her Cantonese pronunciation is excellent (very few northetn singers can pronunce Cantonese so accurately) , but also her voice is very suitable for singing Cantonese songs, and sings the charm of Cantonese songs, and many of her fans love her Cantonese songs even more than her Mandarin ones; also she once said that if a song is available in both Mandarin and Japanese, she usually chooses to sing the Japanese version, and, indeed, the Japanese version of the same song she sings is usually better than the Mandarin version. Chen Jia can compose and write lyrics, and has her own songs. Many of her songs can be found in the program “輕談國學歌風雅” produced by the Chinese University of HK, which is played by her as the singer, music consultant and program host. kzbin.info/aero/PLuIAqtuIe6ADLv0Nv5NJizhy8ljQw9-l3 In my opinion, Chen Jia posses excellent "voice, beauty and art" as well as "virtues, wisdom and talents", and is a rare talented singer and is loved and admired by her fans: **Voice: Although her voice is close to that of Teresa Teng, she still has her own unique beautiful voice: sweet, mellow, fresh and bright. **Beauty: Medium figured, dignified and pretty, gentle and elegant. **Art: An Excellent Live Singer: live singing close to studio standards with no breathing noises, and no need to use teleprompters; Singing Characteristics: natural and comfortable, never pretentious or showing off singing skills, loudness, pace and transposition are particularly good, delicate, charming, emotional, and the artistic conception of lyrics is very well expressed. ** Virtues: Low-key, frank, perseverant, self-damanding, respectful to her teachers, loves children and small animals. **Wisdom: Intelligent, well-spoken, articles showing depth of thought. **Talents: A crossover talent: studied and worked in the financial sector, and has not received professional vocal training, but sings professionally; sings Mandarin, Cantonese, Fujian, Japanese and English songs accurately, although she has never lived in any of the related places except Beijing; can play piano, compose, write lyrics and dance ballet. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Chen Jia held about forty solo concerts each year. Up to the end of 2020, a total of 10 albums (8 in China and 2 in Japan) have been released, and won the Top 10 Hi-Fi Albums Award and the LP Album of the Year Award for several years, and the 2019 Female Voice Album of the Year Award and the 2020 Best Hi-Fi Vocal Award. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHi4lp6XfNyUirM She released her first pure Cantonese album "Seems Like an Old Friend" ( 似是故人來) in August of last year. It covers classic Cantonese songs by top HK singers. Teresa Teng didn't sing any of these songs before. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnqYZ3mQqNOmZ6c (2) Does Chen Jia Deliberately Imitate Teresa Teng in Singing? When Chen Jia was a teenager, she listened to and sang Teresa Teng's songs only. She said these songs are in line with her nature and resonate with her since she was a toddler. Every day she spent her free time on imitating Teresa Teng's singing, and tried her best to sing as close to Teng as possible. But as she grew older, she no longer deliberately sought to imitate Teng’s voice, but from a deeper level, studying Teng’s singing skills and vocal methods. Over the years, these skills and methods have been thoroughly drilled into her, and now can be freely applied by her as part of her own singing skills. Also, as her own voice is close to that of Teresa Teng, she just sings naturally, and doesn't need to deliberately imitate Teresa Teng. The followings are the pertinent interviews, and songs for comparison: 1. The third brother of Teresa Teng said that Chen Jia's own voice was close to that of Teresa Teng. She did not deliberately imitate Teresa Teng's voice. If she did, she could only sing a few close songs. It was impossible to sing so many songs so close. 2. In an interview in New York in May 2017, Chen Jia said her singing is a combination of the singing skills and music knowledge she learned from Teresa Teng, her choir conductor and her piano teacher, rather than just a mere imitation of Teresa Teng. 3. In November of the same year, Chen Jia said on Changzhou Radio, China that she didn't listen to Teresa Teng's singing anymore. She explained if you twist yourself to deliberately imitate others, you will be out of touch with your own essence, and will not sing naturally or sing well. She now sings only by her own feelings about the song. 4. Many of Teresa Teng's songs in Chen Jia's albums have been re-arranged, so they are not simply imitated. Although Chen Jia sang a lot of songs very close to Teresa Teng, actually she also sang many songs with her own way of interpretation. For example, the following songs (first sung by Teresa Teng, and then covered by Chen Jia): 千言萬語 kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6a7q414lLV1h6M kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmekhYZuhJ6XqK8 你怎麼說 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnOynGqkhdereKc kzbin.info/www/bejne/d32kaIysnJ6hoc0 天涯歌女 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aomxgY2YrqyWg5Y kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5zceYiYm7mam5o 人面桃花 kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2K9mJmko5lnn9E kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZXKY2aLrqqbg6M 愛的箴言 kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIWmXnmeibCNfMU kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXWrcnt4o6dkfrM (3) Some Selected Songs by Chen Jia Mandarin: 驀然回首(Original) kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHTLY6ZuqLWFoJY 春江淚(Original) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWapZqqFfZhlraM 在水一方(Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5jGhJKZod52mac 臉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2XTXqutpb-Gec0 雲河(Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp-sppuratepiLM 梨花又開放(Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqOXaGulg9qnrLM 紅豆詞 kzbin.info/www/bejne/q57CfmytmpuLd9E 一剪梅 kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5-alqKhfb6XbZo 嘆十聲(Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYKZXmSjl6mLbsU Cantonese: 有誰共鳴(Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXjZfKqKhpl0b5I 無奈(Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmHIk2ymdr2YoA 啼笑姻緣 kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWnaZZ1ml7iCitk 如風(Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZiceqmvnc-Xg5I 月半小夜曲(Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYOUaH-YrJWkqsk Fujian: 落雨聲 kzbin.info/www/bejne/j360h4yKmdtoqJI Japanese: 風姿花傳 kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGKonaaImqmDfMU English: Killing me softly with his song kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3WoimebaZlkors German: Was ich dir sagen will kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIWklGZ6l6x-oNl- Russian: 美好的遠方(Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5C7kKOqgs6CbKc Updated: March 27, 2021
