Is it just me, or is Yabusame’s character _obnoxiously_ static? Just about every other playable character in BPoHC has had some form of character development, but I have a hard time thinking of anything that we’ve learned about Yabusame since Evanescent Existence. And it’s not like Yabusame doesn’t have the potential to be more fleshed out- we still don’t really have an idea of why they even hang out with someone like Tsubakura.

Well JynX said that they are plain and boring person and common sense doesn't apply to them which IS strange. As their family name is Houlen(Hou translated as phoenix) and looking in their design they are feel so ash-y, so this fact led me to the three theories 1 - They just didn't revealed their true "form" and for this "form" they need some time 2 - From the generation to generation the Houlen clan was reborn to another(ex. grandpa Houlen reborn as papa Holden etc.) so the knowledge is lacking away from each generation(like the Para's situation but less troublesome) so they don't remember to much of its knowledge that passed over that's why they kinda of a moron but still can be smart at times. 3 - Same as the previous version but with one person consists - Yabusame. And probably each "Yabusame" was born in some other dimensions which WOULD explain the dimensional powers. Well.. This theory is a mess About the relationship with Tsuba idk. But JynX said they been known each other since they were young(including Kuroji). I have nothing to add here

I think Yabusame as a static character works well, as a contrast/foil to the other character's developments. Sort of a reference point. Their powers also either seem to be developing or being given more attention imo? Given that - spoiler? below - they were the only one truly unaffected by Suzumi's memory shenanigans.

One thing i dont like about the Len'en series (especially BPoHC) is how the characters feel.. flatter than their debuts? Like excluding a few, (Tsugumi, Iyozane & Shion mainly), everyone else feels weirdly.. blank. Yabusame you already mentioned, but In EE they felt like a childlike & yes, definitly stupid, yet still Heroic. In more recent games its more "haha whats a insect???" Even with Tsubakura in BPoHC with the lore added, They dont feel like an actual character before that, in EE (the real one) was generually concerned over their situation, and in EMS we see their adaption into Mugenri, we see an actual personality! In BPoHC, i dont see it. The entire Shitodo family. oh god Aoji's characterization was thrown out the window for BPoHC (though i like the confident strain, the main side we saw in EE isnt there, at all.) Hooaka turned into a boring straight man, and Kuroji is the WORST- Kuroji who was characterized as a somewhat sadistic trickster while maybe well meaning in very limited cases, and in EMS (or was it RMI?) Kuroji is noted to have a nicer side. In BPoHC, Kuroji turns Saragimaru into a slave of the Shitodo household what thats agh I like Len'en alot, characters are a main point, but BPoHC's characterization was bad :(
