Not necessary, unless mayday. some airport ATC doesn’t manage the emergency vehicle and fire department. The airlines actually need to have trained staff to arrange with the according to the situations, like medical conditions, death on board, or minor technical issues. There is a department or specialist at the local airline that handles all this procedures

Not sure if Senior Flight Officer ( Three Stripe) is capable to make adequate decisions as he/she may not be trained as a relief commander therefore it became a concern from the company. Operate an aircraft is more than just fly it well, also how to make decisions, arrange resources and communications. etc.

@@Mrboom0930 if you look at the chapters before I think it mentions Sam was on the way to be promote as Captain, first HK Captain at that time, they even did interviews already. Surely thinking , he should hv enough experience and training ? Or else he need to have extra training after gets promote ? Not familiar with how the aviation industry works.

@@遲了悔改 You’re right, Sam was still under go training however he may not be competent as captain unless he passed the command course. Exams, simulator assessments and even line checks ( left seat line flight with passengers) are also required for signing off as a captain. Felt lucky to witness the path of some good friend who succeeded to get their fourth stripes. Tremendous hard work indeed.
