Mr Lau was incorrect about the construction workers in Canada. He said no workers are willing to work overnight to maintain roads/highways. Maybe in BC but not in this part of Canada where I live. They often worked 24 hours for a few days (with different shifts of course) to maintain major highways/roads. Mr Lau should also stop comparing workers from different countries as standards are different. After working in Canada for many years, I found that local people (people born in Canada) in the profession that I am working in are more willing to work over-time if necessary than immigrants from Hong Kong.

Hi Sai-Leung, thank you for responding to my comment regarding Canadian education system. Take it easy, don't have to be too radical. As a father of 2, and being raised and having my education in Canada, I am not trying to fully defence the education system. For your information, basically elementary education is mainly focusing on development children basic learning skills and cultivating kid's curiosity towards knowledge and education. My 2 kids were studying in private school in HK before moving back to here 5yrs ago, the transition i cannot say was seamless. but was quite smooth. The curriculum is not too much focusing on academic, and the basic gradings are divided into Not Yet, Emerging, Developing, Proficient, Extending, which are similar to A to E grading. Once the students get to high-school, the first yr, Gr8, is the year of adaptation/transition, and that's why remaining the general grading scheme, but the school will give general guideline, stating what % of mark is representing for each grade. So, once reaching Gr9, the marking scheme for each subject is very clear, the weight for homework, classwork, test, exam, are fully transparent. Nowadays' competition to getting into top University is very high, basically without reaching 90%, the chance of getting straight offer is very slim. Be honest, from today's standard for UBC admission, I don't think I have chance to get straight offer from UBC. The competition is really really high nowadays, and I agree with you that as Chinese ethnic, our advantage is that we have the tradition of caring our child'd education so much giving us the edge. Kung Hei Fat Choy, Happy Lunar New Year. Cheers.
