For the English speaking Teochew nang. Why is the song called Hong Sian 鳳城 ? In Teochew there is a mountain which is called Hong'Huang Suan 鳳凰山 where our famous Hong'Huang dê 鳳凰茶 is grown and it is a type of ou'lêng dê 烏龍茶 [oolong tea] Therefore, this Hong Sian is actually Teochew City, the thousand years city 千年個府城 coin1nin5 gai hu2sian5 and why did they add hu2 in the verse? Hu2 comes from zêng'hu 政府 as in government because Teochew city has been governing the area for over a thousand years. Further on in the song, she sings 千年個古城 coin1'nin5 gai gou sian thousand years old city. I suppose you are aware that Teochew city goes back to the Tang Dynasty and you can see signs of the Tang and Song Dynasties in the city, our culture and language. If you were to read about Chinese history, you will find out that when the Qing army came to our city, they killed almost all the people and left only 20,000 people. Qing are Manchurian which does not exist anymore. There are less than 60 people in Beijing [we call Bag'gian] who can speak Manchurian. The famous temple 開元寺 Kai'Ngang Dzi, in our home town, was built during the Tang dynasty and named after the Emperor Kai'Ngang 開元 . And we have a saying in Teochew 大過開元寺 dua7 guê3 Kai'Ngang Dzi which means bigger than KaiYuan Temple which just means very big as in super huge.

Another input for English speaking Teochew nang over the world. You must be thinking why there is a Hang Gang 韓江 [Han River] in our home town. Well, part of our culture is to have ganghu dê 工夫茶 [gongfu tea] and towards the end the tea ceremony when the last few drops of tea are dropped onto the three little cups, the person presiding would say Hang5Sing3 diam2bian1 韓信點兵 - General Hang'Sing 韓信 inspecting the troops. The river is thus named after General Hang'Sing and we call it Hang Gang 韓江. This Hang Gang is *NOT* related to Korea. Korea is known as Hang Gog 韓國 and this has nothing to do with the Hang Gang 韓江 in our home town.

Again for the English Speakers: I have been thinking of the line in the song 滿滿一腔思鄉情 muan2muan2 zêg8 kion1 se1 hion1 cêng5 and its meaning. I think it is something like this. muan2kion1 滿腔 means to have one's heart filled with joy 思鄉病 se1hion1 bên7 means homesickness and instead of illness bên7 病 the song writer decides to swap it to cêng 情 and therefore it could mean to be filled with feelings of the joy of home. What is your take on this?
