2016 saw many changes for Sunrise including a new weather presenter and a new entertainment and features role for Edwina Bartholomew. It also involved the biggest format changes for Sunrise in years. However, after being beaten by TODAY in the first three weeks of the ratings' year, this was the last day before the format was dropped. From the subsequent Monday, Nelson Aspen returned for entertainment and Nat read all of the news items (including the lead story).
It was also one of the last times that Sunrise broadcasted from their 'Melbourne Home' (the AFL Game Day set at HSV). With a live studio audience, it had become a cheap and creative tradition to connect with Melburnians, particularly during the AFL season. Mel Doyle was still the host when Sunrise started doing these Melbourne shows regularly on Fridays, so it went on for a few years.
Hosted by David Koch and Samantha Armytage, with Natalie Barr (news), Mark Beretta (sport), Edwina Bartholomew (social) and Sam Mac (weather).
