I saw Esther and Abi Ofarim at a 'folk club' in Birmingham(UK) in the late 60's and thought they were great - thanks so much for bringing back those times for a short while.

This song is Easter for me. We used to hear it over and over then when I was small, sung with and were happy. Happy Easter 2014, Mama, Opa and all who went away before me! We'll meet again, this is the Easter promise.

Elle avait beaucoup de potentiel et une voix remarquable. Quel gâchis.

Thanks, I had been watching out for that song, as I liked to listen to it on the old LPs from my mom ;)

Chanting mantra or rhythmic Latin or african chants are most suitable for the limited vocal range. Most agreeable to my ear. And a bit of fun to watch for anybody who enjoys a theatrical performances.

Did anybody ever understand the lyrics to this beautiful song? I probably never did. At 10 or 11, I remember, I used to sing along with some probably very funny misheard lyrics....

Me too, and still just hear my childhood text "Fish come in go down the chacha..."

@@romanlach4033 What's wrong about it? I think you were absolutely right according to the lyrics page. www.esther-ofarim.de/chacha.htm I was about 11 when this song came out, maybe 12, in my second or third year of learning English (I'm from Germany) and very eager about it. I sang along with every American and English song I heard on the radio, and of course, didn't understand an eighth of what they were singing about. My version of this song went something like: "Fishkamengo down the chacha wounin chacha fillmincattle"... or something like that... 🤣

Ah yes, calypso is also the genre that would suit this pair of singers very nicely.

I know that Abi's family comes from Germany (family name, Reichstadt), but he was born in Israel, in Tzfat, in 1937, so his parents weren't running away from the Nazis, or maybe they did, because the Nazis really started up in the early 30s. I'd expect Abi to have become the strongest Zionist. So how is it that he ends up moving back to Germany, marrying a German woman... actually two of them, he's on his third wife now... how can any Jew... any Israeli... do that?

Nationalism is not the highest and most important value in life. There are other reasons to live besides one's country.
