I feel this is the best place on KZbin to look at Soutine, the clarity, texture and pace of this is wonderful. He was one of a kind in his time and a big influence later. AbEx is one example (deKooning et al). Thank you for your wonderful work.

Chaim Soutine; Landscape At Ceret Everything strains. The jumble of walls of the town strain. The trees that screen the town strain. Soutine strains as he hurries to cover the canvas. Ceret is a French town in the Pyrenees Near the border with Spain. Soutine went there probably after seeing paintings, Cubist paintings, by Picasso and Braque. Soutine is not a cubist. He painted Ceret ten times, probably fifteen times. What we see is the jumble of walls of the town Screened by trees. Sometimes a tight screen as the tree trunks are close, Sometimes a loose screen. Soutine walked away from the town and downhill. What we see is the view back; back and up. The jumble of walls is a light yellow With some yellow ochre. The walls are light colored, The trees, or tree trunks, are a mid-range Mix of brown, yellow and tan. The tree trunks lean to the right as they rise. In some of the paintings the trees reach the top Of the canvas. In some we see a bit of sky -- blue and white. The roads out of the town Widen at the bottom of the canvas. They are almost the same color as the town. Even the bits of hillside or mountainside At the edge of the paintings is strained, A town behind a wavering screen of trees is what we see. The thick paint on the tree trunks is sculptural. The town walls are not painted quite as thickly. Soutine will never be as famous as Van Gogh or Picasso. Why is difficult to say. Van Gogh was also an outsider But is now loved. Picasso is a household name. Soutine wil never be loved.
