Chad Hedrick brought a lot to the sport, as did Derek Parra, K.C. Boutiette, shani Davis (who has a huge Dutch fanbase) and quite a few others (ladies as well). I remember the older Dutch coaches criticising their unusual technique, mainly brought from inline skating and (Davis) shorttrack. Chad and Shani seriously kicked ass in the years they were preparing for the 2006 Olympics and the year after that. the Dutch scratched their heads and had to adapt, trying to learn techniques that enabled them to accellerate in corners instead of using corners as a moment of maintaining speed gained on the straights. This 2008 race was inevitable, as Chad Hedrick was losing interest in the ice and Sven Kramer was becoming the next big thing in skating. Chad had his Olympic medals and for him it was probably time to move on. Fortunately for us Shani and some other US speedskaters stayed true to the sport and gave some fierce competition. It took Sven Kramer a very long time to overtake the Americans on the Adelskalenderen. I think that the American influence was a well needed push of the envelope in our sport and for that and more Chad deserves tonnes of respect from the fans of the sport.

I once watched Pete Rose go 0-5 with four strikeouts and two errors in the field. I once watched Peyton Manning throw more interceptions for touchdowns than tds to his own Colt teammates. But despite these bad days, do these two athletes measure among the best who have ever played? Of course. As a speedskater who moved to inlines, I will testify that Chad is one of the greatest to ever lace them up. Humiliation is kind of a strong and value heavy word, and only Chad knows....

10 km: Sven Kramer 5 km: Sven Kramer 1500m: Shani Davis 1000: Shani Davis 500: Jeremy Wotherspoon Team Pursuit: Netherlands thats the way its gonna be, Kramer and Davis are unbeatable on 'their' distances, i reckon. 500m is a tough one, but i think Wotherspoon will be in top form just in time again. as for the team pursuit: there is no country in the world that can select 3 better skaters in this event than Netherlands. im guessing Kramer, Verheijen and Wennemars will bring home the gold!!!

@fastj1962 your comment just prooves how little you know about what happend. I bet you didn't seen any interviews after and such? Sven knows the rules or he wouldnt be number 1 with all his medals he won last few years. Lee did an outstanding 5k in Vancouver, no discussion. But let's see if he can do it again. There is the difference. Sven Kramer has 3 (three) consecutive world titles. petterhny, you also forgot to mention Cycling, Baseball, Volleyball and some other sports, but that's ok. Good thing we are not discussing why the U.S. is sooo good at so many sports... Caeurt: I agree with your argument about the conditions, but remember, most Brazilian kids don't even have shoes and still they have thousands of great soccer players. It's not that there is no competition. Differences in funding etc. will exist everywhere in any sport. It shouldn't take the merit away...

In Holland, if we don't know a sport that well, we usually introduce the candidates for medals, by airing a short documentary before the event, so people know who and what they are watching and there is no need for such an introduction afterwards. So it was all a big misunderstanding that led to some funny television. I really don't understand what all the fuss is about

Unfortunate for Kramer, but -4 seconds at the finish line with an inner-course error is a big "IF". If Kramer had -7 second lead or something, that would mean he was already besting a time less that 12:55:00, which obviously means he would have won the gold. If Kramer was having a WR time like run such as the 12:40:00s, it would be obvious... An Inner-course DQ run with -4 seconds from the previous leader is vague. It's not convincing enough that Kramer would have won either...

Chad is a legend in inline speed skating 52 world championships and winner of multiple Olympic medals. He had to change his technique to skate on ice, which gave him a disadvantage. His technique on inline “ the double push” revolutionized in-line speed skating. He began speed skating on ice at the end of his inline career and very soon after got to be world champion. I would like to see the same from ice speed skaters. Chad was the first skater to break the one hour marathon. Let’s see Sven race inline and see his results.
@bjornar90263 жыл бұрын
But Chad was great at skating on ice as well. In 2004-2006 he was, together with Shani Davis, the best ice skater in the world. The result we are seeing in this video is just due to Hedrick stopping his serious training after the 2006-season. Hedrick has skated faster than Kramer’s winning time here.

It's all a big miscommunication. The reporter had done her research. She had even been to Holland before the games to find out all about our speedskating culture. But American media report on the premise that all viewers are dumb, so they are used to having less known athletes introduce themselves. She should have told that to Kramer before putting him before the camera. Kramer as a foreign athlete did not know this American habit, so it is understandable he made the mistake.
