Nice one Chad! loving these standard videos. Question for anyone who reads this, the A section to this tune, does everyone just see it as CMa7-EbMaj7-Dmaj7-Dbmaj7? using Ionian for each? See any of them #11/lydian M7s? I've seen different on some charts, just curious.
@alexambroise111
@alexambroise111 6 жыл бұрын
Jazzer Caster there is no "right" way, really. Play it how you feel it! Blues, Ionian, whatever, to get confortable with it, and then explore other sonorities after that! Good luck:)
@ChrisBandyJazz
@ChrisBandyJazz 6 жыл бұрын
Original changes are: Cmaj7 (2 bars) Cm7 (2 bars) D7 / C (1 bar + 2 beats) Db / C (2 beats) Cmaj7 (2 bars) So yeah, what you said definitely works! Just keep in mind that E-flat ionian will give you C aeolian-so you'd have an A-flat in C minor! And D-flat ionian will give you a G-flat in a chord that is resolving to C major. These are not traditionally common but like Alexandre said, there is no correct way. If it feels and sounds good to you (and whoever is paying you) then do it!

around 1:19, Chad plays an enclosure to land on Bb, the fifth degree of Eb which is the tonic chord in the phrase. In the enclosure, he plays an Ab and Db. It's obviously to make it sound out, but does anyone know what kind of structure he could be thinking about to organize that specific sound? Or does anybody else commonly use enclosures to the fifth of the tonal center that are either exactly like that or similar to that?
@georgehiggins1320
@georgehiggins1320 2 жыл бұрын
I guess the Ab makes sense since it's diatonic in Eb. Is the Db just a #9 of Bb sound?
@georgehiggins1320
@georgehiggins1320 2 жыл бұрын
For clarification, the six notes I'm talking about are Ab, Db, B, A, Bb, G. Maybe the Db, B, A (enharmonically, C#, B, A) could be an E natural kind of sound?
@georgehiggins1320
@georgehiggins1320 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. I don't think there's one "right" way to think about it, but I think having as many angles as possible to look at great improv from makes it a lot easier to understand and emulate. If anyone else has any other ideas about how to understand either this part of Chad's solo or ANY part of Chad, Steven, Michael, or Yasushi's playing, please let me know!

Connor Wilde Connor, this is the first I ever heard of chad, I know you probably are saying, WHAT? but I haven’t been keeping up with the newer younger players that much. I really don’t hear too many that impress me much. I’m a jazz drummer, so I focus more on drummers, with the exception of Keith Jarrett . His trio he had for quite a long time just knocks me out. In my opinion the greatest jazz trio ever, and dejohnette is one of my favorite drummers along with many others, and Keith Jarrett is to me the, the greatest pianist on this planet. He’s just a f---g monster.
