Most people are talking about the sexual tension in the song but I feel the need to mention Lucas Grabeel’s (Ryan) commitment to this performance. He had knee surgery right before they started rehearsing and it hadn’t healed properly. During this entire scene he is wearing two knee-braces and a back-brace (you can actually see the back-brace under his shirt in some of the shots). He said he was in so much pain he would literally collapse in-between takes. And yet he still gave it his all and managed to produce this absolutely iconic performance? So much respect for that man.

i’m as much a fan of the gay undertones here as anyone, the lyrics are so subtle that i didn’t get them as a kid, but as an adult i can appreciate the subtext so much better and it’s amazing. BUT I think the mixing of music style is equally great! we go from pop (Ryan’s style) to swing (the predominant lyric) to hip-hop (Chad’s style). this is my favorite song in the whole series because of how it conveys the story through lyrics and tone, and absolutely slays while doing it.
