A phenomenally skilled jazz and rock drummer, Chad is an authority on the teachings of Murray Spivack [Murray taught Vinnie Colaiuta, David Garibaldi, Louis Belson, Brooks Wackerman and many others.] Chad has amassed a remarkable body of work including a seven-year association with Frank Zappa. Chad's "rhythm words" can be found on records by James Taylor, Barbara Streisand, Steve Vai, Andy Summers, Men At Work, Ed Mann, Albert Lee, Colin Hay, Dweezil Zappa, Pasqua/Holdsworth/Haslip/Wackerman Group, Terry Bozzio, Carl Verheyen and David Garfield. He is a first-call studio drummer and world-renowned educator, no wonder he is so knowledgeable about modular drumming.

If you were lucky enough to see Holdsworth in the 80's you no doubt remember Chad's extraordinary playing and the symbiosis between the three men on stage, be it Jeff Berlin or Jimmy Johnson. It was a must see for all musicians in the Los Angeles/Orange County area, which is where most of us were, stapling flyers to telephone poles, playing shows on the Sunset Strip and mailing the occasional cassette tape to one of those giant, insurmountable record companies.

Saw Chad w/ Allan at least twice in NYC -- the Road Games tour w/ Jeff Berlin, and later the Metal Fatigue tour w/ Jimmy Johnson. No shade intended on Gary Husband, who's a damn fine drummer (and keyboardist!), but my favorite AH trio became and still is Chad + Jimmy. Otherworldly interaction among those three.

I remember when Chad filled in for Marco Minneman on the Steven Wilson tour for the Raven album. His appearance was pretty impromptu so one could forgive him for any discrepancies on such involved material. Not a chance, this dude didn’t break a sweat. Pulled it of flawlessly. The one thing that stands out is a really involved musical section and he pulled out of it a crazy fill that fit perfectly and was technically breathtaking, so much so the whole place collectively gasped in amazement because it was such a deft display of pure craftsmanship. A true legend of the instrument and a national treasure as far as I’m concerned…

I had the experience of a lifetime when little old me, once a goofy boy from the South Shore of Massachusetts, helped Chad Wackerman set up the merch table at Jonny D's in Somerville before a gig with Allan. I gave Chad my Swiss Army knife to open up a box of compact discs that would be up for sale post-show. He thanked me and smiled. We got a little bit of merch out on the table and then he said he could do the rest. He was so 'normal.' Then he played a great show with Allan and (I believe) Jimmy Johnson. Thank you for all you have contributed to this weary world, Chad!

Well, us standing 1st row with a jawdropper flatrate after the show: ALLAN, CHAD, MARKUS and OLIVER (US) sitting in a Corner of the Venue with a whole BOX of BEER (incl.24 bottles of a 0,5 liter), which ALLAN had ordered, and oh my GOD, if you want to play like THAT, we painfully learned back then, that you ALSO have to DRINK like them. 😂

Watching and hearing him play with Allan Holdsworth always gave you a face busting grin. It seemed like the best kind of musical sensory overload possible. Like he was trying to break everything and still make it work, (it looked like a kid having too much fun). He gave you way more than enough to try to focus on. When you took a break from zeroing in on Wackerman, There was Holdsworth putting out such a vastness of brain melting excellence that there was no chance of soaking it all in. There are lots of brilliant guys doing shows now, but that was some of the greatest %&*# of all time.

I guess you could say I speak the language of Zappa drummers. Bozzio is my nouns. Vinnie is my verbs and Wackerman is the punctuation.

Brill filming of one of my favourite drummers! So skilled, yet so chilled if you meet him. His FZ days were pretty special too! x

So relaxed in his torso, just sittin' still. All the reaching and moving about done with his arms. I would recommend you youngsters pay heed if you want a long career free of nasty ailments.

I went on an IOU tour in Japan in 1984. At that time, Mr. Chad still looked like a boy.

Although I prefer Gary Husband out of all of Allan's drummers, this is a FANTASTIC performance here by Mr.Wackerman!!

Para tocar batería con Allan holdsworth y Frank Zappa hay que tener medallas..este las tiene.

Allan didn't compose in terms of time signatures (to him, everything was in one)- it was up to Chad to play what fit with the phrases.

why the fuc# do drummers need a laptop or "display" by their side ??? it's a new trend i guess where they can appear to be "technolgical"
