How do the themes of eyes opened, eating, and recognizing link Luke 24 to Genesis 3? Was Cleopas the uncle of Jesus? Was Emmaus possibly where the ark of the covenant had been kept? Why were the two Emmaus disciples prevented from recognizing Jesus at first? This story just never leaves me. I can vividly imagine being one of those disciples and the alarm, delight and awe that stuns them as they see him break bread and disappear before them. I have looked at many paintings depicting this very event. It is one of my favorite stories of the Bible and I pray it often, “Lord, open to me the scriptures so I can understand you more”. It helps me when I have felt like I am groping, astray in discouragement, or in sadness. I love this beautiful story. God did not have to include it, but he did. He reaches out to those on the margins, who need his assurance and care.

Thank you Chad Bird for the marvelous insight into one of my favorite post resurrection encounters w the risen Christ I have a painting, reprint, of the two disciples walking on the road w a third man in a white robe. I love that picture. I had never seen you in the bet before today and also viewed your commentary about our pets. Very soothing and empathetic. I will listen to you often. Shalom and maranatha. ✝️

This is my favorite story in the NT. This is the only story that makes me cry 😢. And, i found out about 3 months ago that Mercy Culture did a song about this story.

I pray daily for the past six years that Jesus save me from the horrendous suffering that is my marriage. Yet the suffering continues. Idk what to do

I read the Bible I prayed to remember while I read it that God is always good. If I think it reads otherwise, I assume I'm always wrong. And prayed for understanding or patience.

Good stuff. I saw this "recognizing Jesus" as a direct allusion to Joseph's brothers recognizing him after he had ascended to the throne and saved them. The last they knew of Joseph was that he was essentially dead. They later recognized him as the one who saved them, his brothers, after they rejected him...in fact their rejection ultimately was used to save them (Genesis 50:20). In the same way - Jesus left "the pit" we sent Him to and saved us and ascended to the throne.

wonderful hermeneutics on your part... I love the wording of scripture "that very day" (the day when the women went to the tomb) because it means it is still part of the 8 day Feast of Unleaven Bread. So when Jesus breaks the bread, it is the unleaven bread He is breaking. It also means it is a full moon (near the 15th day of Nisan) so the two have light to guide them on their 2 to 3 hour walk back to Jerusalem at night. As you indicate, the OT scripture provides meaning for much of what occurs in the life of Jesus.

Looking at the passage that talks about this "breaking of bread", in this text, as a reference to the Lord's Supper, and relating this to the "opening of the eyes", I think of two things: The first is that in the opening of our eyes we can see that He is present. Christ really presents the sacrament. And the second is that, in the opening of our eyes, we can perceive the new reality, something that the Supper itself gives us: the vision of eternity, that little piece of heaven that we have in the Supper.

Where is the cup of wine? We cannot assume that it was there. If is a reference to the sacrament we would have the cup mentioned.

Thank you so much for another wonderful lesson. Here are my comments: (3:50) "Jerusalem is where all events are heading, ... and then to the outermost ends of the earth." We humans are inclined to localize our knowledge and goals to sustain our own comfort zones of reality. But Jesus' command was to get out of those comfort zones, and our localities. His command was not to go back to Jerusalem but go away from it. Our preoccupation with Jerusalem has held us back, even to the point of romanticizing the region and landmarks which distract us from the actual site of these events-- the universal hearts of men as a global species. (11:30) "And they don't recognize Jesus", but this does not mean Jesus had changed his appearance. Recognition is perception by the viewer, and seeing a dead person would face a steep climb of cognitive dissonance. "He, she, they is dead" is as settled a reality as humans can attain. The overarching description of the apostles from day one until Thomas putting his fingers in the wound is that none of them could overcome this settled reality and simply believe. Jesus was standing right there talking to the two travelers, with his same divine face, same divine voice, same godliness, yet their disbelief blinded them, as it blinds me, and us. The scripture is not that Jesus changed his appearance, but that our disbelief blinds us to truth even when standing right in front of us. (14:47) "God's arena of work is what we refer to as failures". What a magnificent insight! If human failure is the stuff of the divine arena, it is inexhaustible, and our potential for coming to that amazing grace is limitless. (16:20) "We are not ashamed of the cross... we hold the cross high, our God has been crucified... We look at everything through the lens of the cross". Jesus did not prophecize that he would be killed on a cross, only that sinful men would kill him. Nor did the Old Testament prophecize the Roman cross. Would crucifixion be as terrorizing to the victim and spectator as damnatio ad bestias? Hopefully, the symbol of a lion crushing a skull in its jaw would be as ordaining as a crucifix. Our tendency of idolatry to icons requires periodic vigilance, as with Christian Orthodoxy. I attended mass in two churches this year (Panama City and Belgrade) that did not feature any crucifixion icon on the altar but instead Mary at Jesus' birth, and Jesus at resurrection, respectively. Are we crucifixion obsessed when Jesus did not tell us to be, but instead Himself emphasized his ascension? (26:34) "​[The teaching of Luke 24 is] ...​Jesus says come, I'm going to break bread with you"​. But that's not what happened in Luke 24, it was the opposite, as the two travelers asked Jesus to come and break bread with them.​ It was two disappointed and grumbling men inviting God to break bread, not knowing of their guest's divinity, and Jesus rewarding them by revealing himself in body, then disappearing rather than walking away. The grace Jesus gave them was the honor of adding their account of certitude that the resurrection was real at a time of widespread confusion, disappointment and grumbling. The lesson perhaps is the grace of witness is there if we open our eyes uninvited.

Shalom brother Chad. Is there a lesson overlooked in the “artos” (leavened bread) that Jesus broke instead of “azymos” unleavened bread)? This event happened in the third day of Passover. שלם
