Who Exactly Was John the Baptist?

When John the Baptist asked Jesus, via his disciples, if he really was the Christ, why didn’t Jesus just say, “Yes”? Why did he respond by pointing to his miracles? This passage has always confounded me because I find it troubling that John the Baptist could have had doubts. Even when he was in the womb, John ‘leapt for joy’ in the presence of the pregnant Mary. I believe it was Dr. Brant Pitrie that offered John’s message was more for the benefit of his disciples who may have had doubts - but hard to know for sure. These passages are another example for me that every word Jesus spoke was imbued with deep and multitude levels of meaning.

I don’t find it hard to believe that he doubted. John was a mortal, a sinner, like we all are. Plus, he was in a horrible situation (prison) when he sent those disciples. What would have been unusual is if he didn’t have doubts.

I wonder if John the Baptist is a connection between Exodus offering mikvah to the people before the Lord came down on the mountain... the LORD said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments -Exodus 19:10 John was preparing the people for Jesus.
