I was "Recycled" back in 81. I never let the others get to me. What I will say from my experience is that it made me a better operator. The guys who I keep in touch with to this day are mostly the recycle crowd. Most of us had successful careers after we left the Navy. In fact, we get together every July 4th weekend. We'll be in Santa Barbara in 2022.

Incredible human being I owe you so much! Two years ago I lost the mother of my four kids to an unexpected illness. I was left to raise four children under 10 years old three boys and one girl. I let myself go and got lost in every way and was hanging on for dear life! A year ago I dicscovered you're channel by chance and I decided to listen to what you preached! In 2005 a hurricane took the roof off my house. All the roofing companies were busy helping everybody. So a retired navy seal helped put my roof back on. He was such a great person. That was such a wonderful thing he did. We paid him and he was not a roofer. But I had it for 17 years. It did the job. He had one helper.

I had 6 years in the Navy. Went through S.E.R.E. in San Diego in 72. I used to watch the seals train on the beach. Lots of respect for those guys. I flew off the Forestall, E2 squadron. Miss those days.

@@jrossnjax7 Yes . I reported to squadron, VAW126 , about a year after repairs to Forrestal were completed . I would probably have been one of the victims had I been aboard when the fire occurred. Our berthing area was directly under arresting wire 3 , where the fire was .

I am an ex 11 bravo (infantryman) in the Army. Back around 2002-2003 time frame me and about 7 other guys from my company got tasked out with guarding the merchant marine ship the "cape horn" . We were carrying military cargo from Rota naval base in Spain to kuwait through the suez canal and alone the horn of Africa. They were worried about being hijacked by pirates so that's what we were there for. At all times there was a gaurd at the front a rear of the ship at night I used to sit up there and look over the front of the ship and watch dolphins swim with the ship. They would jump out of the water and be glowing green. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Loved that trip had a blast in Rota too.

At least you didn't get sent to Afghanistan or Iraq. It sounds you had a fun military experience. I got out in May 2001 with my honorable discharge and never went back. Long before 9/11 I was working with Special Forces hunting high value targets in Kosovo. That opened my eyes. I knew Bush Jr. was similar to his father and going to be starting wars that I didn't want to be apart of.

You just got a new subscriber. I was just regular ol’ infantry, USMC 1/7 B Co. 1990-94. Totally respect you brothers. I left Dec. 10, 1992, for Somalia on the first plane to hit the runway in Mogadishu, Somalia. We had about 3 hours after we hit the ground to hydrate, and 5 ton to the embassy.

I'm guessing he got an attitude adjustment from his CO at some point.. or several points. Kudos to Chad for your service and being one bad m-fer... but seems like you still have a bit of a chip on your shoulder. Those guys were injured going through the same intense training you did.... just because you didn't get rolled, doesn't mean you were better... you just had a better luck of the draw, perhaps a better boat crew, or ...... perhaps you sand bagged where you could, while another guy was putting out and got F**ked up. Saw it happen over and over again... to others and ultimately myself. Either way, you're a hard man and I salute you for making through the hardest training on the planet.

@@b9285 I absolutely see why he would be pissed they should put thoes guys together in there own class not around the ones that were injured and I’m sure some of them used that to get a break on something that wasn’t bad enough to warrant it you can ask seals they will tell you those guys do make it but it’s known in the community who they are and they aren’t trusted and usually get the shit jobs so it all come around and I’m sure he saw that once he made it threw that they got what was coming like Jocko said there are some that live on the reputation of the seals and Those that maintain the reputation of the seals.

Chad thank you for this video. Eveybody talks about BUDS but almost nobody about SQT. Others SEALS talked about this as "gentleman course", which does not seems to be at all these days - still selection after previous selection.

I’m glad a seal actually gave us a better understanding about this sqt. It gave me a abroad perspective on the matter and I can sense just by his very detailed memory of the ordeal that it was that hard of a tough experience and he tells it like he remembers every single minute of it everyday. that should tell you how much it sucked. I think the worst part is truly getting injured and not be given the option to continue, I know I know there’s a lot of stories of recycles but honestly I think that’s why they got such an attrition rate all it takes is one bad injury or getting sick, get bad peer rep or failing one of the qualification operations and your done… that shit is crazy… and I respect those who make to this wether they fail or pass… if you reading this mad respect love you guys for your effort thank you for going through this shit future and past servicemen 👌🏼👑💯

I never had a diploma so it felt good to finish and be a part of something bigger than me. I was in 72 to 78. My duty station was a sub tender. I played poker with the divers, and the dive division Master Chief was a SEAL. He was injured. Somehow don't know the story, but it was in Vietnam. A real tough dude. As an ET 2nd. I love taking his money. He told me many times he would kick me so hard my mother would feel it. He said that because I told him my mother taught me how to play Seven card.

As an Navy Diver I loved the water and would have loved the combat diving. Now passing buds, hell week, the obstacle course and of course San Clemente Island demolitions - I don’t think so. Thank you for being a SEAL.

I know that around year 2000, those rebreathers were limited to like 40 or 50 feet deep. Maybe a bit before. But they used to have a fairly low max depth range. Hope they've improved it...and considerably.

I went through navy SERE school in 1991 below San Diego. It was now joke. Try being smooshed up in a box for over (12 hours I think.) It's not like you had very much track of time while you're in there. But I understand. They got to weed out the one's that are going to freak out and go bonkers. Lol. I spent some time in Niland. One night we were floating the irrigation canal with homemade fishing poles we made out of pool sticks. We saw a huge rattle snake drinking from the canal, surrounded it and beat it over the head with a pool stick . We took it back to the compound and bbq’ed it… I’ll never forget that…

I was on a in water beach run for over 10 miles forward and backwards... both arches collapsed and it took me around 2 years to heal properly from plantar fasciitis! Also, the flesh of my nipples was completely gone after the run. Probably the hardest thing I've ever done

Back in the 1960s we dry camped out by NiIand, in the desert. WouId get into jeeps and dune buggies and head out towards Buttercup, then afterwards, us kids go miII around in the sandy washes with the firm sandstone waIIs. This was for weeks during our breaks. OnIy thing we had to worry about was fIashfIoods. There is a US MiItary training range in that area. Good times!

Of course you probably all ready know this however Maybe some of the other people here don’t but they keep the people that get rolled big those guys proved themselves as worthy navy seal candidates during training. You have to also prove to be a “team player” which means getting along with others. Just because one never gets hurt during training doesn’t mean that they are a better man than the guy who does get hurt and rolled or rolled because they did not pass an evolution. They take your whole character into consideration when going through the process. There’s a number of seals who are bad azzes, even some Team 6 guys that were rolled at one time or another in the process.

HA. Excellent honest self-evaluation Chadd. I got rolled ("recycled" in Army parlance) through half the shit I went through. And was top of the class in other courses, sometimes the top of the class after the second time through. Phase one of SFQC ( failed land nav). LOTS of failures in that test before somebody figured out an eight-digit grid coordinate can, at best if everything goes perfectly, get you within ten meters of a small orienteering marker and you can spend all night searching the bushes in that ten meters for that marker and never find it. Yeah they changed that years later to finding an old fat guy in a tent instead of that marker and suddenly the pass rate shot up. HALO (pretty sure my instructor 'NO GO Rondo' was fucking with me in the air because his Ranger'ed-up ass didn't like my cool-guy haircut. Anybody heard the story of Rondo's LAW 'bank-shot' at Desert One? ). 18D course ('Trauma 3'). Jumpmaster (JMPI). Not Ranger school though. NOBODY wants to go through a single day of that again if they can help it. Frankly I think there is an ego problem in the SO community that hurts us. There are selection courses, and there are training courses, and sometimes the lines are blurred between the two. Sometimes intentionally blurred because some jackass thinks he is the gatekeeper to some imaginary higher level of bad-assary when in fact his real job is to teach a skill set deemed desirable or necessary for mission accomplishment. He thinks his job in a training course is to FAIL people when in fact it is to TRAIN people, and if people are failing (or getting hurt) it is HIS fault at least as much as his students. 'Students' are not always 'candidates'. I remember the first couple of HALO Jumpmaster courses had near-zero pass rates. Somebody had to hit reset on that and explain to the cadre that it was a course to teach a skill set and not a trial-by-fire cooler-than-thou dick measuring contest. Just my 2c having tried and failed and tried again several things, and having been cadre for both selection and training courses. And consider this: some guys HAVE to make it through without getting rolled because they know their egos wouldn't let them survive getting rolled. It takes something to fail and start over that not everyone has.

I was a combat diver in the Army. The worst water I ever dove was in the Philippines at Subic bay. Olongapo City sewage flows through. Every dive we had ear infections and every cut and scrape was infected and running pus. Nasty stuff!

About the only thing I have in common with this guy is a fact I have a red beard. That’s a lot of training to go through and to know that you could still be dropped. Why things that I say I wish I did in the military But when I hear stories like this all I can do is think to myself and I have to be honest and say no I really don’t think I could’ve done it. That’s a really humbling thought to know that I wouldn’t have been good enough on my best day. I have a Lotta respect for these guys. Whatever I guess that statement is pretty dime a dozen but I do. I’ve never heard a seal talk shit about the seals or say that they regretted it I’ve literally never heard that. I think that says a lot.
