I have that exact splash top. Excellent jacket but terrible off-brand velcro on the wrists made it unusable without additional elastic to keep the water out. Mine was on closeout - hopefully they fixed that before you bought yours. Great video. Thanks

I’ve recently read that the 120 rule is not quite the safest guideline because if the water is cold enough, the air temperature doesn’t really help offset that. The most important factor by far is water temperature. Enjoyed your video.
@ChadHooverFishing3 жыл бұрын
Yessir. It’s just an overall guideline and if you use it, you are close, obviously if it happens to be 70 degrees with 50 water temps you are better off in anti-exposure gear and will die if you spend very much time at all in water that cold
@pdfahie3 жыл бұрын
@@ChadHooverFishing that’s what I thought but wasn’t sure what water temperature is considered very dangerous for a short time period. The more I watch of safety kayak videos, the more reluctant I am of fishing in December and beyond, even in my 10’ pond prowler plastic bass boat
@lightfeather995325 күн бұрын
@@pdfahiejust as a newbie trying to learn this stuff, I wouldn't trust going on the water if I've never practiced falling in and getting back in the boat or kayak in that water temp. If you don't know how your body will respond to cold shock, that seems very dangerous. It can prevent you from even having the strength to shout for help, let alone be able to get back in a boat.

Great video! To keep fishing in colder weather (we're nearing the "120" threshold fast!), I took your advice and bought NRS cold-weather gear. It's an expense, but it should allow me to fish for another 6 weeks or more. Then there's ice! And no, I'm not interested in ice fishing (though if I change my mind I got the gear!). BTW, I indicated my purchases were due to your recommendation. Love your channel and videos! Another "large" fisherman: Roger, The Smiling BassHole

Been reading your book Chad, I appreciate you being the leader and pioneer to the kayak bass fishing world; it has literally changed my life. My dilemma, I went to pick up those NRS sidewinder bibs and noticed that the new version is no longer made with the belt that allows for sealing into a dry top etc. Do you run the new version? Would you even recommend it? And if not, what other product could stand in? Especially here in Texas, I feel like the versatility of those bibs were awesome. I just don’t know if want to spend that money on the new version if it’s an inferior product.

Have you taken a swim with the bibs paired with a dry top? If so, how did they perform? I think I’ve narrowed it down between the sidewinder and the Nookie Pro Bib Double. Even the people at Kokatat don’t express much confidence in their Whirlpool Bib as immersion protection (when you actually talk to them).

Chad, Great content as always, I'm glad you focused on layering your gear appropriate for the water conditions as well as the outside air temperatures. Whenever the water temperature gets into the mid 50's I switch over to my waders and once I put the waders on I always wear my #SilkWeightUnderwear under them (courtesy of the USA) moister winking base layer and I build from their all determined on how cold the air temperature is during that trip.

I'm an older dude looking to get a very stable kayak, so I'm curious what gets people in the water. The Bonafide ss127 seems really stable. Yeah, that’s a myth. Especially if you wear a belt, a dry top and/or the PFD snug over the top. I plan to do a visor on this topic this winter to further prove that it is a myth that waders will drag you down.
