I’m watching this for the first time 2 days after the death of Bud Grant; a great man and a great coach. That 60s and 70s era of football was incredible. Tom Landry was such a huge part of the landscape then. It’s the kind of life that Jimmy Stewart would play in a movie. Landry was a WW2 hero and you’d never know it, he was genuinely humble and never a bragger. He was a teacher, he was a hard worker. He was also misunderstood by fans and players alike. He had to separate business from his emotions; win or lose; it always seemed like he had no emotions. He had tremendous self control and maybe not so much an extrovert and ppl mistaked that for coldness and being uncaring. His relationship with Tom Henderson years after TH was out of the league shows how much heart Landry truly has. How about Landry taking a washed up Mike Ditka; making him a player-coach and giving him a future beyond alcoholism. When Ditkas Bears beat Dallas 44-0, Ditka felt bad about it. Landry was pure class, he made no excuses, he gave the Bears credit. Landry won 2 SBs but easily could’ve won 7 or 8. Hard luck in close playoff games was more often than not the story in the Landry years. He never cried or whined or offered excuses. That was a man, a great American man, Tom Landry

I started watching Coach Landry in 1969. He was my role model growing up. I have a paver that honors his accomplishments about three feet from the base of Coach Landry's statue at Cowboys (at&t) Stadium. The sun cast his shadow on it every day. More proud I could not be.

Richard Durrett Reporter for Dallas Sports 1998-2014 Died suddenly by heart attack at age 38. Totally devoted husband, father, and man of integrity. Total respect by his colleagues and peers. Dallas sports and reporter community wept for weeks after he died. "do it for Durrett" benefit founded in his honor. In it's first year, the Rangers and Cowboys raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the family. Now it's an annual charitable event raising money for the poor and disadvantaged.

You are probably right, going 3-13 in his last season after 11 years without winning a Superbowl a lot of people said he was out of touch with the modern game, whatever that is supposed to mean. Then Jimmy Johnson comes in and goes 1-15 in his first season and Landry still got the blame because they were HIS players. When Johnson won the two Superbowls of course they were Jimmy Johnson's players. It usually never ends well, even for the great ones.

Rick Lozano Johnson said when he took over from Landry ' I could not believe how slow this team is at every position, at Miami we had speed everywhere, here we have none'. So thats kind of putting the knife into Landry from the start. Then of course they ripped off the Vikings with the Herschel Walker trade and got a shedload of picks to reload with quickly which made him look like a genius. It happened so fast it made people wonder what Landry had been doing for the last few years and that affects his reputation unfortunately.

He died a Giants fan. He loved and rooted for the Giants until his dying day. We love Tom Landry! Obviously he'll be remembered as a Cowboy, but Giants fans have nothing but respect for him.

I've lived in Southern CA since I was 9 years old in January of 1978 but my first two years of baseballand football were played in Plano Texas in 1976 and 1977 and to this day, as hard as it's been the last 10 yearsI have been a Cowboy fan, and even though I was very young I very much remember the feel of Dallas Texas when I went to party's with my folks to watch Laundry, Staubach, Dorsett, Newhouse and the crew play. You wouldn't know it if you weren't from there but there is something very special about Texas, and especially Texas football in the 70's. Also watched Earl Cambell and Johnny Lam Jones kicken some serious ass with UT back then. Despite it being a little hard to watch at times this is a great post. Thanks!

Mr Lewis I have seen bits and pieces of this but never this show in it's entirety.It's excellent. Being in Ct we were not exposed to a lot of Cowboy news but I set up the old 12 foot satellite dish in the 80's and over the years amassed lots of stuff. I flew down for Tom Landry day April 22 1989 and drove out to Hall of Fame for his induction.. It was great. But this video is nice. Lots of little things I've never seen. Thank You for posting

I'd really like to see a video of just his playing days. He practicality invented the modern pass coverage defense. He was so slow but he got alot of picks by just knowing through preparation. Charlie and Cliff, Everson, Dennis Thurman. None of those guys could play today. Belicheck took alot from Coach Landry. When Charlie talks about foot placement every team does that now, on Madden you can really see it, the game is practically built on foot placement.

He didn't get to be an All-american college fullback at UTexas by being a slow runner. But I think I get what you mean......he wasn't exactly Bob Hayes on the field. 😂

Today is the 20th anniversary of Landry's death. I was 7 and in the 2nd grade at the time. My dad met him and got to shake his hand sometime in the 70s when he was living in Dallas.

The great coaches that enter the conversation have a quarterback that they won with... Coach Landry won with Dandy Don, Craig Morton, Roger Staubach, Clint Longley, and Danny White. That separates him from all the rest of the men in that conversation.

I have nothing but positive thoughts and comments to add about Tom Landry. But I have to also comment on those people who got on Jerry Jones' case for firing Landry. A lot of those people were actually calling for Landry's dismissal in the late 1980's when the Cowboys were one of the worst teams in the NFL. Coach Landry had a great run for 30 years as head coach and was an innovator in terms of how the game is played today...But being a head coach of a pro football team is not a permanent job, it's not written on a contract made of stone. Even the guy who replaced him, Jimmy Johnson, was temporary. As Bum Philips said: There's two kinds of coaches in the NFL..them that's fired, and them that's about to be fired...

I found an old VHS tape and in spite of the poor tape quality I had to post the memories of one of the greatest coaches and men of all time. I am glad that others can share and enjoy the memories as well! Every Sunday as a kid I would watch my beloved Cowboys and the man in the fedora, standing arms folded, was a presence that I couldnt explain, but it was reassuring...as long as Tom was there, all was right in the world. I always felt that the Cowboy's stadium should have been called "Tom Landry stadium" especially after his passing in 2000. Green Bay did that for the great Curly Lambeau after he died in 1965. It would have shown a bit of class on the part of Jerry Jones but I guess that's expecting too much.

Because they never got "set" before doing the shift. Funny thing, even though they did the same thing for years they would still get penalties on the defense a few times a season.

Coach Landry was a great coach and innovator until he wasn't. I always respected Landry, but two things tainted his legacy for me: 1. Acting like a pouting girl when Jerry Jones was trying to fire him in person. Jones finally caught up to the Runaway Bride Landry on a golf course in Central Texas. Then, in the first Super Bowl coached by Jimmy Johnson, Landry was interviewed about the state of football but said he'd be "too busy" to watch the Super Bowl with Cowboys in it. Imagine that. A snake he turned out to be.🤔

My family had season tickets in 72 and 73, and we were all big Cowboy fans. Landry was a man of sterling character and true integrity and morality. That said, I think he was overrated as a coach. He sometimes valued the Xs and Os of the game more than the human factor, and I think it cost him and the Cowboys a few championships.

Johnson won 2 super bowls with Tom Landry's team including Michael Irvin, Nate Newton,Kevin Gogan, Mark Tuinei, Bill Bates, Chad Hennings, Ken Norton Jr., Robert Williams, Mike saxon, Danny Noonan, Jim Jeffcoat, And he already Drafted Troy aikman, Tony Tolbert, Mark Stepnoski and Daryl "moose" Johnston. Then there was of course The Hershel Walker Landry pick that enabled several more draft picks and players to be brought in. All those players remained well into the 90s and brought about the Dallas Dynasty. Almost all of them Hall of fame material. Jimmy Johnson.....great motivator, but please don't put him in a class with Tom. His tenure in Miami states he wasn't able to win without Tom Landry backing him with talent.

Ah Yes...4 out of 5 of the offensive line were Tom's. One of the greatest O-lines in NFL history. Dallas gained from Hershel Walker trade, Isaac Holt, Emmit Smith, Alvin Harper, Dixon Edwards , Darren Woodson. Because Danny White got injured and missed a season and a half....is why Tom lost his job.

Landry did NOT draft Aikman, Moose or Stepnoski. Those guys came in the '89 draft. Great coach but credit where credit is due.
