What significance do the HOMO and LUMO have? Do all nonbonding molecular orbitals have 1 node?

greetings from Nepal sir..sir,i want to ask you a question..In the allyl anion or radical, the non -bonding two and one electrons respectively are shared by end carbon (c1 and c3),how is it possible for sharing of there is a nodal plane in the middle?

Greeting Bipin! This is one of the great mysteries of electron delocalization. These electrons are shared in more than one location at the same time. And the electron density is indeed shared on C1 and C3 but never on C2. You really might think of the electrons as being able to move from C1 to C3 without ever passing through C2 (which just seems crazy!). We actually encounter similar situations with the atomic orbitals if you think about it. Look at a simple 2p orbital. There is electron density on two sides of a nucleus but the electron can never be found at the nucleus as there is a node at the nucleus of a p orbital. So how would an electron pass from one side of the nucleus to the other side without passing through the nucleus? I have no idea but just accept the fact that electrons have the ability to pass from one side of a node to another without ever actually being present at the node. In the early days of quantum mechanics one of the few to have a good grasp of it said something to the effect that if quantum mechanics makes sense to you then I am sure you don't understand it, the point being that in many ways the quantum world is so different from our everyday experience that it just doesn't make sense. Hope this helps!

@@ChadsPrep thank you so much sir...That question made me think like i am not understanding the topic at all☺☺but now it is clear that wasn't my fault

No..as there are 3 atomic orbitals so there are 3 molecular orbitals..that's the rule No. of Atomic Orbitals = No. of Molecular Orbitals
