I am currently doing organic chemistry 1, and you are helping me understand this so much better than my professors lectures. I love how simple this is and visually not overwhelming. Thank you so much, truly.

first of all thank you for all these videos! i have a question here. at 4:02 why having stereo selectivity is only gonna get 2 out of the 4 product?
@ChadsPrep4 күн бұрын
What I mean here is if a reaction is "stereoselective" i.e. some of the possible products are favored over others due to kinetic or thermodynamic factors. For example here syn addition occus so the 2 syn products are produced

These reactions videos are great! I have a question regarding Catalytic Hydrogenation. My professor made a point in class that some catalysts are Heterogenous, which are in different ‘phase’ of the reactants and won’t dissolve in mixture while other catalysts are Homogenous, which are in ‘phase’ with the rxn and dissolves in the reaction mixture. What uses are there in knowing these two differences ? He also mentioned that since a catalyst is heterogenous, we can control the product outcome, or something like that. Can you explain that a bit more please?

There are benefits and disadvantages to both. Heterogenous catalysts are more easily recycled (because they are in a different phase to the reaciton mixture) which can reduce production costs. Homogenous catalysts usually allow greater control over reaciton conditions and increased efficiency because everything is in the same phase (think metal ions dissolved in a solution versus a solid metal catalyst)
