I'm an ex-blockbuster employee and we had several regulars that would rent 15-20 movies every week. Most of them were night guards or had a job that required them to sit in one place for hours with no interaction. And yes, there was a limit you could rent - 9 or so - but we could override the computer, for example, if they had a seasoned rental history.

In regards to the question of why there's the whole thing with people talking to other people from within a television or computer, it was at a time where the Internet was becoming more usable for the masses, companies were developing newer and more powerful technologies, and advertisers just didn't really know where all of it was going, so they all came to the conclusion that the apex of digital hardware would ultimately be people merging with technology, and the best way to get that point across was to show people literally inside of technology. It was the fastest and most efficient way to convey this idea, so everyone did it. I don't know how old you are, Mr. Tronic, but it's just something that I always saw, and it was pretty easy to figure out.
