Hi Charlie. When building my viaduct I had some great advise on RMweb - not to have my viaduct square with my backscene. After much messing around I must say it did look alot better at a slight angle. Something you might want to try?
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, Isn’t it bazaar that placing it at an angle never even entered my head. You’re right it might look better, and would even help on the curve issue coming off onto the right hand board. Sometimes you can’t see the wood for the trees. I will certainly size up that option later today. My sincere thanks Paul.

Great video, Charlie! Nice to have you back! I plan to use EnviroTex Lite myself, one of these days when I get around to pouring the river. I notice you have two S curves coming from the old Chadwick TMD to the viaduct. Those could very well cause you problems. When the front end of one freight car is going one way and the other is going the other way, it does not make for pleasurable operations. If you could figure out a way to have a straight section of track of at least one car length between the curves, that will eliminate most of the issues.

Hi Charlie. If you used a curved left point on the old Chadwick board instead of a straight left-hand point you could relieve your track radius to the junction before the viaduct. I know this would mean taking out more of the hill/cliff of old Chadwick, but I think it would flow better. Anyway just a thought - Keep up the great work!

Nice progress Charlie. As well as moving the twin track tunnel back a bit, have you thought of a road in the hillside coming out and crossing a bridge where your single tunnel is now, or something in that vein? Have been looking at Lukes channel for a while now and it amazes me as to what realism he achieves. I will never get to 10% of his achievement but have picked up some good tips, as I have from your channel. Barry.Devon.

Hi Charlie I've figured out a track plan that works with your intended plan. Junction remains where you sited it. Down Line 3 2nd radius curves. Up Line 2 and a half 2nd radius curves. Remove Double Slip "Y" point and Left hand point. From Double Slip position install Left hand small radius point followed toe to toe with a Right hand small radius point (from which will come your new curved and extended Head Shunt track) then a left hand Curved point. Existing main line can then be realigned to follow the curved points radius and connect with their respective 2nd Radius track ends, the resulting curve will be much gentler and visually more appealing. So the entry to the TMD for the down line track is sorted for the UP line track you would need to install a Single Slip at the crossover on the other board and relocate the other Right hand point at the appropriate place in the track above. I hope this makes sense and that you gain inspiration to have a plan that satisfies your operational requirements. Regards Gary (Models Australia Victoria V/Line era)

Maybe it's worth considering running the lines into Chadwick in the open on an embankment on the hillside, while the lines to the fiddle yard dissapear into a tunnel in the hill behind? Especially if you are thinking of moving the scenic break on the left of Chadwick TMD anyway? The double junction and diamond looks really great and it would be a shame to hide it.

Love your videos and your layout and I’m sure your valley will be spectacular once done but I’m not 100% sure on your track plan in that area. I suspect that those 2nd radius curves (which I’m guessing will be covered) are going to give you no end of derailments and by putting the viaduct bang in the middle of that short edge and making it symmetrical it may end up looking toy like. I’d butt the viaduct right up against the left side and make the valley “lop sided” against that wall, then move the double junction further over to the left so you don’t need that 2nd radius S bend to join the double track main line. Maybe even consider a proper sweeping double junction from Marcway and keep it out In the open?
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway 5 жыл бұрын
Some great points thanks but I don’t understand Marcway? I’ve spent quite sometime on the track plan and I think that I have a way forward part of which you have indicated. I hope that you’ll be pleased at the outcome. Regards Charlie

Chadwick Model Railway Marcway is a Sheffield based company that do custom pointwork. They can make you a proper double junction where the cross over rails on the diamond junction are curved all the way through like the prototype rather than curved on the point, straight on the crossing then curved again on the other side. marcway.net/point.php

Hi Charlie I've been watching your videos for quite some time they are both entertaining and informative. You do have quite a problem integrating the TMD portion the big problem is retaining the head shunt. That small "Y" point certainly throws the track geometry out. Iv'e spent a couple of hours using Anyrail trying to designs options to eliminate or reduce the dreaded "S" curve. The only viable option I came up with is to run the Up line along the front of the TMD and the Down along the back track where the tankers usually are stored. There are probably prototype precedence's where this happens. You would still have your Head Shunt and both lines would do reverse movements into the TMD and can be signaled for these movements. Everything else on TMD remains unchanged. Regards Gary (Models Australia Victoria V/Line era)

Another great video Charlie. You recommended watching Luke Towan’s channel and having already viewed many of them myself I can also recommend him but, you should try watching “Luke’s APS” (another Luke), he is from the U.K. and although he does a lot of war gaming tutorials he also has lots of excellent scenery tutorials. What makes him stand out isn’t just the fact that he has the ability to create stunning scenery it’s the fact that he has experimented it would appear quite extensively with cheap widely available products to create scenic materials that are often far cheaper than the well known brands that railway modellers and war gamers normally use, he then passes on his tips, techniques by way of easy to follow entertaining tutorials (much like yourself). You mention in your video “Sculptamould” and Luke at Luke’s APS has a far cheaper alternative recipe for Sculptamould that requires you to mix fine casting plaster, water and toilet rolls (not a crap idea, sorry couldn’t resist that). He also has great tutorials for making cheap flock, rock moulding, painting, water effects and many other scenic tips that are definitely worth watching. Keep up the good work on your layout.

Been following Luke for a while and he is very good. Loved the Wilson, Kepple and Betty sand dance during the backscene application. One question, you appear to have a broad plan for the layout but you also seem flexible when things are not quite as they seem, the purists would pour scorn on this as not "being cricket old boy". I have never been able to understand that attitude as surely things are never perfect and would need tweaking even for the best planners. Another wonderful video. Thanks Frank.

Hi Frank, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video. Yes I always think it best to constantly re-think your design as you go. There is no shame in getting it wrong and correcting as you go. We are only human. Good luck with your layout. Regards Charlie

Great video Charlie and very informative as usual. One question I have is what track base on the viaduct have used. I’m in the throes of relaying my layout and want a viaduct but wondered about the track base.

I had an idea that it might be the boss popping in but thought that she was either coming in to quality control your work or else find some of the equipment that you have “borrowed “ from her own craft room or the kitchen. Keep up the good work, Charlie!

Hi, I’m away from home currently but I recall the board is 36 inches wide and it has a a couple of inches spare. It’s roughly 34 inch diameter, 17 inch radius.

I only run diesels so I can’t comment on steam locos where I imagine there would be real problems. Only a warship had issues running but if I turned it around the snag disappeared. Please check out my very first video. Sadly you will rename your channel too!

hello , i have a question . the rails you are using are from the UK but are the HO scale or ? because i live in the netherlands and we have fleishmann and roco and piko . but with your railroad yunctions you can put the motor under the table . so that is why i am wandering if its HO scale because they look like the real railroad .
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Warren, the rolling stock produced in the UK, by Bachman’s, Hornby, Dapol etc, is OO scale with HO axels. I think that this has come about through years of HO track production and now it’s too late to change the track to the correct scale.
