With a population of about 10,000 , the Chagossians would be better off to remain or become British citizens.

These stories always forget the Britain bought the Chagos Islands from Mauritius in the 60s, paid resettlement fees and purchased all real estate from the Seychelles company that owned the islands.

@@thedamnedatheist The claim in the comment about the Chagos Islands contains elements that need clarification: 1. Britain and the Chagos Islands: • The Chagos Archipelago was separated from Mauritius in 1965 to form part of the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). • Mauritius was under British colonial rule at the time, and the detachment of Chagos occurred before Mauritius gained independence in 1968. • The UK did not “buy” the Chagos Islands from Mauritius; it effectively retained them during decolonization. 2. Resettlement and Compensation: • The UK forcibly removed the Chagossian people (the indigenous population) from the islands in the late 1960s and early 1970s to make way for a US military base on Diego Garcia. • The UK paid Mauritius £3 million in compensation for the detachment of the islands. However, many argue this was not a genuine “sale,” as Mauritius was still under colonial control and thus not in a position to freely negotiate. 3. Ownership and Legal Disputes: • In recent years, international courts, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the United Nations, have ruled that the UK’s detachment of the Chagos Islands was unlawful and that the islands should be returned to Mauritius. • The Seychelles does not play a significant role in this issue, and the claim about a Seychelles company owning the islands appears incorrect. In summary, while the UK compensated Mauritius, the process was highly controversial and is not considered a straightforward transaction. International legal bodies now view the UK’s claim to the islands as illegitimate.

Diego Garcia was a British military base since WW 2 .The Chagosians may return to the over 60 other islands of the archipelago of BIOT as British subjects as since before 1968 .

Has China 🇨🇳 ever handed back any territory that they have occupied? - Examples are Tibet, East Turkistan, South Monglia, and the islands and water in the South China Sea.
