Good job. Make you a lifting beam. Two hooks would go into openings and a u-bolt would hook to your hoist.

Get a couple soft ties for motorcycles. Wrap those around the front axles and then to your hook to hoist that gravely. They won’t scratch your paint. You can find them rated at 1800 lbs real easy.

Looks good. If you ever have a problem with the 2x4s you can always put a piece of plywood between the two and it will make it stronger.

TIP 1 of 2: to get through a ceiling to see where to drill in the attack, take a coax cable and strip it to the center wire, about a foot long. use pliers or fingers to push thru sheetrock. push entire center wire up thru sheetrock into the attic, or vice versa. the wire pushes up so you can see where you are to drill. TIP 2: use a smaller chain with a hook on both ends, put a hook on each side of where the chain hoist is, then hook thru the chain and lift the chain, instead of center, that way it wont buckle the center over time. the weight is then dispersed between two holes instead of center. thanks.

Great video dw6! I have a question why did you go with a chain hoist instead of a come along with a steel cable? We have basically the same setup in one of our barns and it works great. I wrapped a thick chain around a 12 inch tall, 8 inch wide, 1/2 inch thick I beam thats about 25 feet long. Then I leave a hook dangling down a few feet and hook a come along to it to lift up the front of the mower like you do. With a come along theres no chains dangling down to get in the way. It works great and so will yours. You'll use this thing for more things than you think. Something for you to think about, try wrapping a strap around the frame where the casters are from one side of the frame thru the chain hoist hook and then down to the other side of the frame so you know it won't go anywhere just to be safe. That's what I do after every mowing to clean out the deck and we mow our grass sometimes every 4 or 5 days in the spring. You could also use two straps too instead of one. Love2boat92 With the come along you have to stand right there, at least with the 10 foot chain I can get out of the way. Either system would work. I really like the strap idea going around the casters. I don't have a big enough strap yet but I will get one. Do you put any jack stands under yours?

That is a good point about getting out of the way. I do not put any jack stands under the mower. I really should but i find they get in the way a lot.

Yeah its a good habit to get into. Maybe I'll start using Jack stands when I'm under the mower. My trouble is how would you put them under the mower so if it falls it falls on the jack stands or I'd have to get really tall Jack stands.

Like your install-you could make a spacer out of wood to put behind for your tow ball lip to hinge into to raise that mower up higher-my two cents.

I did the exact same thing in my garage/shop, except I went with an electric hoist. I used a heavy steel pipe strung between the rafters to hang hoist from. Works like a champ. Loving the Gravely!!! Best damn mowers ever built IMO.

The two 2X4's are OK. But capping them with 2, 1"X 36" angle iron sections , such as a U on top would lift the World. 4, 1/4 " holes drilled at the end of the angle iron ( 1/4" X 1" lag screws ) would stop distortion. Just thinking out of the box.

Robert Davis the way he did this was over doing it already I am lifting my entire mower off the ground with a heavier hoist rating and way less support from the ceiling

SuperDuckman24 Yeah, great machine. I still have it and it has been a money maker for me. The gravely is used to get inside 45" gates and as a back up if the toro is being serviced.

Doublewide6, you did a fine job but if your anything like me, you would install an electric hoist in your garage. I'm getting too old for manual stuff. Harbor Freight has a $1300 LB winch (model # 60344) for less than 150 shipped :)

I'm thinking of the future day you sell the house, along with the hoist. New owner decides to lift the front of his pickup the same day there is a 12 inch snow outside. He reads on the label, hoist rated at one ton; bearing for the hoist set up to fail before the hoist fails.
