This is not impossible to follow a righteous and pious path without renouncing worldly affairs and duties. Humanity lies in full filling our duties and not in withdrawing from it and becoming a monk or nun of any religious affiliation. Every human being has a God-gifted right to live a happy life, well connected with his or her relationships and be duty-bound.

Those are the run off the mill religion "followers" who don't follow their own religion in toto but are extremely traditional and zealous of their religion. For them their religion is like a group which provides them their daily dose of collective effervescence and social well being but they would tend to run away and escape from anything that they don't like in their religion but would very much subject others to it and would praise, glorify and genuflect towards those who do it. This is interesting to me as a westerner, because in most western contexts a child is concidered to not only have certain rights but also to have certain responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is to be able to live and function democractically. In order to do that it is generally concidered that a child has to undergo education both in terms of facts and theories, but also a kind of social education in which the child learns to socialize and cooperate with people from different ethnic, class and religious backgrounds. This is what strikes me: if someone from the age of 8 leaves school to fully pursue religion in a context in which everyone or nearly everyone they encounter is of the same background, they will in practice become outcasts living on the fringe of a society they do not understand and to which they do not fully belong. If we say we take democracy and living together in a common society seriously, putting an age limit on the practice of living secluded from the rest of the world makes perfect sense.

All jain monks are given very good and detailed education not only of Jain religion but also of all major religions of world. They are taught languages (In India almost all monks and nun are taught English by default), they are taught law and justice, then interested monks are taught about politics awareness, civics, legal systems and so many more things we cannot even imagine. Its a image made that as they have renounced worldly things they know nothing. They stay perfectly between the society. Most monks are found mega cities of India like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Indore. So no where they are disconnected. Infact the core of Jainism is to stay happy without possession. Being happy is the the the most important thing. Western media and many people who do not know jainism tries to just make sensational headlines. The ultimate goal of any Jain is Moksh. Moksh means salvation. For your kind information the defination of moksh is as follows. A state where there is extreme and maximum happiness and that happiness is permenant. Meaning the happiness does not reduce at all. And its the maximum happiness one can find anywhere in the universe. Its for this goal all Jain's practise what they practise. Not just this, monks and nuns are the most ecofriendly people in whole world. If you read about that in detail or come to India and see their lifestyle you will be shocked and so happy that nothing else in this world can even reach near to them in terms of eco friendliness. Then why to stop a child from becoming the happiest and the most ecofriendly being. Is it bad? If child agrees and parents agrees no one else shoudl have any issues. And if some one pressurises a child then it is anywhich ways not allowed as per the scriptures. And some exceptions will always be there where a parent forces a child or the guru forces a child. But we cannot ban the system because some handful of illeterate people in a community.

So, if you get offended easily during discussions regarding religion, or do not like questioning religion, then I suggest you do not read further. Thank you.***** I have a question for people who really believe that kids should be allowed to make decisions about religion at such a young age. Would you be on board if your child asked you to attain Diksha at a young age? Would you still be on board if your child said he wanted to practice some other religion, and not the one his parents, i.e., you and your spouse, practice? The man at 14:16 mark talks about the right to practice a religion of your choice. So, would he still defend this fundamental right if, for example, a kid, around 9 or 10 years old, told his parents that he was going to practice some other religion. Would the child still be allowed to practice his fundamental rights then? It's just a question that I have, and in no capacity do I mean to offend any person of any religious background. If you still, somehow, find it offensive, then I apologise for it as that was not my intention.

I think Diksha should be a very liberal way to be accepted , at least for children, they should be imbibed in Diksha partially ,allowing him/her to enjoy childhood as and when he matures he can fully be absorbed in Diksha.

The whole concept is not for all I guess, suppose all 7-8 billion people want to take Deeksha, tell me the way how the world will survive then? Where they will go for getting food.. Eventually they are dependent on the people who can give them food so that they can survive.. Practicing this for a shorter duration like one year or two seems good.. I mean by that way we can control our feelings and get over ample of worldly things.. But for whole life I don't thing it would work in totality... These are my personal views, I'm not trying to offend any practice or religion here..
@manishshah22642 жыл бұрын
First of all 7-8 billion won’t take diksha. There are only 4-5 million Jains. Diksha should be taken after understanding the world and pains. One only matures at a certain age ( 25+ at least) so these kids or parents have no idea but want to do best for them. Unfortunately most of these parents are only following their own dreams and presence in society. The parents of these kids are not giving up their own lives but living this through their kids unfortunately.

Children who are made to go to school and sit for long hours and have to endure tuition class after tuition class and enrichment class after enrichment class after school are also in a state of slavery. The monk's right on that one. Lots of grown up former child academic slaves like me are willing to say so. I endured such a childhood.

@ြ ķ76ထüß Then why is it that of the children raised in cults; children raised by Amish; children raised by non traditional couples (I hope you understand my meaning, because if I write out the words this comment might not post), so many come forward as adults to say that they were wronged during their childhoods, and that something essential was taken away by them, but not children raised as Jain monks? How is it that children of other cults who are openly acknowledged by psychiatrists to have been brain washed can speak up as adults? Has any psychiatrist interviewed child and adult Jain monks and found them to be brain washed, for you to make that claim? Please provide me with the links to those studies.

@ြ ķ76ထüß Then why do you bother? If it is such a non-issue, why do you bother to post comments on this subject which is obviously so pressing otherwise you wouldn't do it, then you delete your comments. Why? Obviously, it is not just a numbers game. Do you have any data on the numbers of dikshas from ancient times till now? I refer you to the Times of India article of 19/10/2015. // In the 12 month period from 01/08/2014 to 31/07/2015, the Jain community saw the largest count of people taking the vow if diksha. Doctors, lawyers, businessmen and teenagers were among those taking the route to monkhood. Today, the number of monks in the community is a whopping 16,000. In 1986, there were 9,426 monks, and their numbers rose by 836 over the next decade. This, despite the fact that there are about 1,200 deaths among Jain monks each year. // I also refer you to BBC news 08/07/2019. // There used to be hardly 10 to 15 dikshas a year until a few years ago. But last year (i.e. 2018), that number rose to 250 and Dr Joshi says this year is likely to see 400 dikshas. Last month, in a procession of 600 attendees, most under 25, reportedly hundreds expressed a desire to take diksha. Among them was a 12 year old, who wants to take it before he turns 15. // Please do not change the facts to suit your convenience. The total number of Jains is 4.5 million, not the total number of dikshas. So from these, the numbers of dikshas are slowly and steadily climbing, at a comfortable pace. And you seem to have a problem with that, or you wouldn't comment here.

@ြ ķ76ထüß 2nd comment for today : Jainism has survived since the 9th century B.C.E., according to Western sources, though the Indic sources put that date much much earlier. Many Hindus also agree with the tenets of Jainism, and Hindus have no problem following multiple religions. So Jainism as as ideology will never die out. It will always have new adherents. And that bothers you, otherwise you wouldn't comment here.

hey rahul , i saw your research . and would like add my views over this topic. as far as children rights is considerd you must stay with jain saints how they keep the bal muni ,such caring, love n with responsiblity. even if they are though on them they are just like the parents. to stop them from going to wrong path. And even before giving deeksha they testify wheter the child is suitable to observe the muni life. ALTHOUGH ITS NOT RIGHT TO FORCE A CHILD FOR TAKING DEEKSHA BUT YOU DONT WORRY IN NON OF THE JAIN SECTS NONE OF THE MONK GIVE DEEKSHA IF THAT PERSON IS INTERNALLY DONT WANT.HE IS TOLD EVERTHING THAT AFTER DEEKSHA WHAT HE HAS TO DO , WHAT HE CAN NOT DO AND ALL THAT. AND TO WHAT MR. SHAH SAID THAT TIRTHANKAR 'S ALSO TAKE DEEKSHA AFTER CERTAIN AGE ,EVEN LORD MAHAVEERA HAS GIVEN DEEKSHA TO BAL MUNI AIMUTTA MUNI AT THE AGE OF SIX. AND IF YOU THINK THAT IN THIER YOUNG AGE THEY WILL WISH TO COME TO MATERIALISTIC WORLD ,WELL I PERSONALLY KNOWN MANY SAINTS WHO HAVE TAKEN DEEKSHA IN THEIR CHILDHOOD AND ARE REALLY HAPPY TO TAKE THIS PATH AND ALSO INSPIRES OTHER FOR IT. THATS WHAT I WANT TO PUT. AND REALLY ADMIRE YOUR WORK , WHICH HAS CONSIDER ALL SORTS OF VIEW , BUT WOULD REQUEST YOU TO STAY SOME TIME WITH ANY LEAREND SAINT AND GET THE ESSENCE OF THEIR LIFE.
