The primal fears are defined as categories all fears fall into. As such, the Darkness Devil is not exactly the "fear of mutilation", but rather might just fall into that category. However, darkness has been listed to fall under extinction, rather than mutilation, although as mutilation has been described as losing a natural function, darkness may qualify for that.

I mean, the powers a devil has doesn’t necessarily have much of a connection to what abilities they possess. The Chainsaw Devil, for example, erased devils from existence after eating them, but even putting him aside, we have the Spider Devil with her zipper that lets her act as a portal. Not like I can’t come up with some esoteric interpretation to link their abilities with the concepts they represent, but it’d be delving to symbolism and the occult for that.

The dark is a common fear, so that is probably why it is associated with a primal fear, but chainsaws, while they can be dangerous, don't seem like they would create a very powerful devil. So the Darkness Devil is 100% about mutilation, but the first thing I thought of when it first removed everyone’s arms was that: if you try to navigate in the dark, your eyes are useless so you’ll rely on your other senses, using your hands to monitor the ground in front of you with touch, as well if you walk on all fours you’re less likely to trip as you’re more stable. By removing someone’s arms they’re now incredibly vulnerable due to losing the stability of four points of contact with the ground and the ability to perceive what’s in front of them, and humans panic if suddenly they have no way of knowing what’s going on around them

It's important to note that the series is implied to take place sometime before modern day, or at least in an alternate history timeline, since there's a quick mention of the Soviet Union still being a thing at some point. Stuck alone, in the darkness.

I was thinking about the symbolism and the theme of the closed door in the manga, but seeing the picture of the gang ariving in hell made it so clear. The five primal fears you brought up aren't imperially THE anything. The idea that there are only five primal fears was the hypothesis from a 2012 psychology paper by Karl Albercht-- it's not really the accepted definition of primary fears or even a very popular idea in psychology. I don't really think this manga was referencing this "five primal fears" essay. I think the term "primal fears" was probably meant to be interpreted in the usual way-- as in an ancient commonly shared fear. The definition is just an innate fear that is programmed into our brains. What the fiend actually says is, "the devils with the names of the five primal fears... are watching us." Darkness is a devil named after a primary fear. Most people see the fear of darkness as a primal fear. I suspect the reason that there's the space motif is probably an aesthetic nod to the genre of cosmic horror, which is often associated with space travel and body horror (a few examples of movies which contain both are The Color from Outer Space, Annihilation, and Event Horizon).

Then going by that list of primal fears, we'd have the darkness devil being the fear of mutilation, control devil being the fear of loss of autonomy and chainsaw devil being the fear of extinction. So devils names and the fear they cause aren't necessarily the same. It would also explain why makima could go toe to toe with the darkness devil, since the control devil is also based on a primal fear.

Techincally both Makima and Denji can be 2 of the other Primal fears. Denji can be the Extinction devil since the fear of annihilation, or ceasing to exist describes his true powers that he displayed. Makima could be described as the Loss of autonomy,the fear of being immobilized, paralyzed or controlled by circumstances beyond our control, this sums up Makimas powers pretty well too since no one can escape her control once she holds you. This could also probably sum up how Makima survives being eaten since primal devils powers may not be able to work on the other primal devils much like how Makimas powers couldnt work on Denji.

I know this is late but during the darkness devil mutilated the crew Denji stand up and started buzzing through the darkness devil as he buzz through darkness devil a spark was created and show bodies surrounding darkness devil all pointing toward to spark to shut it down. I think those bodies who is in command of darkness are the one who cause those injuries to the crew and also the sword floating in mid air. If only someone who is calm and in control of the situation except Makima could exploit its weakness which is light then start killing those bodies.

Curious about where you got the list of primal fears from, i don't remember it being mentioned in the manga, and I would've said that darkness was up there for one of the most primal fears of all life, so it seems weird to me that a specifically darkness devil would not actually represent darkness but mutilation? I'm not sure I completely follow the logic there. With That Said: I really enjoyed this video, it's not too long and you don't yell and even though I'm not sure I agree with your point, you've clearly researched your angle and I can definitely get behind that. I wish you would've explained your take on the astronauts but that's my only real complaint. Personal biases aside, 9/10 video Imma subscribe

I appreciate you! The primal fears I worked with weren't listed in the manga but they are what are identified as shared fears among the masses. I have a link for my source on that but that was from a few recognized scientists within the neurology field including Aarsland, and Kragh-Sorensen. That's just a few out of the many listed as a source for the information lmao.

Most demons don't remember anything from their time in hell after getting killed in physical world. A few of them remembered the sound of a chainsaw though.

The first part of this video is quite the stretch. The division of the fears you used, the 5 primal fears is a relatively new categorization and is in fact one of many that can be used. The reasons why this categorization probably isn't the one that was used in Chainsaw Man are two: Firstly, you have to close your eyes on 80% of Darkness Devil's nature in order for this category to work. Okay... he's the Mutilation Devil... so where does the fear of the dark fit in there? Why does light counter a supposed devil of mutilation? And second is that the categorization is already fundamentally conflicted with things already established in the manga. The third fear - "loss of autonomy" is Makima's power - the conquest/control/domination devil. Yet it is strongly implied the Horsemen devils are not primal devils, and Makima is a horseman devil. Though we could argue that controlling people is not the same as robbing them of their autonomy, I don't think Fujimoto is likely to make that distinction. If he does then fuck it I was wrong.

Why does he have chainsaw arms and head? Thanks state's that their appearance will correspond to their names and what is feared in them, I don't see the connection between chainsaw and extinction, other that chainsaw can kill and go brrrr

Devils gain power from other being's fear of them. Note "Other Beings". Not just humans, but other animals AND other devils too. It's why primal devils are strong, a fear that is inherent in most living beings. It's also why the Chainsaw Devil is so strong. Not only is it a weapon that induces alot of fear, but that also Devils fear the Chainsaw's ability to completely erase devils. Question is how and why. Maybe it's explained more in part 2. Maybe not. That's the fun of CSM.

Isn't it the fear of the unknown though? The series is usually pretty straightforward with their naming, so I'll have to disagree entirely. Past precedents would make this not make sense. On top of that their presentation makes sense with the darkness aspect. And the fear of the unknown could be considered a primal fear in it's own right. Everybody has it and it's why it's reassuring to know what's going on in any given situation. It's also why paranormal situations freak people out so much, and more so than someone who believes in and accepts said supernatural phenomenon as a part of their reality. Honestly I as thrown off by the mutilation thing as well but it's still make sense because it's something that'd make you question in panic what in the world is happening, which would fees the devil as well because they feed on fear. I also think it's possible that the author will make their themes something else entirely and just make them have these aspects on the side. Thanks for the video!

The fear of the unknown isn't necessarily a primal fear because there's so many different versions of it. There's a fear of space because it's unknown. There's a fear of deep sea because it's unknown. There's a fear of the darkness because it's unknown of what is in the darkness. For example uncanny valley. It's not classified as a primal fear but it is something that most people experience. I was going solely off of what has been scientifically theorized as "primal fears"

@@PapaTraffy I know that this is going off of the scientific definitions of primal fears, but I think the author has a different idea of them in mind, or else the Darkness Devil would have simply been called the Mutilation Devil. Not to mention that darkness, as you said, is feared because of the unknown, and is not defined solely by mutilation. Also, on the comment that the unknown is too broad in it's variety, I'd argue for that being a case for calling the unknown a primal fear. It's something that everyone conceivably experiences in some way or another *because* it's so broad, meaning that it's primal in the sense that it exists everywhere because of that.

Could be that, makima embodies the fear of loss of autonomy. As in she controls people beneath her. She could be as powerful as the darkness devil but chooses to run to save denji? Just speculation on my part tho

Makima was extremely powerful. The only people stronger than her were Chainsaw Man and Darkness devil. The control devil seems like it starts off a lot weaker and gradually gets a lot more powerful over time and had insane potential. Because of this I think Nayuta can become really OP in later parts of chainsaw man

What i dont really under stand is why the Darkness devil is referred to as a primal fear. Wouldnt it just be an offshoot of the primal fear "Loss of Autonomy". Darkness in itself is only scary because we cant percieve the world around us and are bound to a world without sight

It's hilarious that you went on Google to look up "primal human fears" to explain the Darkness devil. The name of the devil is what fear it represents. The fear of Darkness. Haven't most humans regardless of their origin been afraid of darkness at least at some point? It's not scary at all that the protagonists lost their limbs -- they'd been losing them left and right. It's scary that we don't really see how it happens. The characters are in complete darkness the entire time, except for when Denji used his chainsaw. The frog is there bc it can see in the dark and it's the only thing seeing or anticipating the devil's movements. Not because people are afraid of them or because of some ancient Greek tales. You really dragged everything by the ears with your Google searches
