Thanks! Great to hear the video was useful! 🙂 Another video I recommend is this one. I've not reached his level of expertise, but have made a few tables for use at our camp in the woods using the technique. Though I prefer to use an auger to drill holes for the legs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJKUomSjgN6Dq5o

Mike Pepler I was thinking that. I made the first one, it didn't come out too bad considering. My first cuts were a little bit off so the legs aren't centered too well, and I didn't have a big enough tree anyways. It's kid sized though, and I'm happy enough for a first time. Next time I go out I'll try and find a bigger log.
@mikepepler
@mikepepler 11 жыл бұрын
Mike Giuliano My first ones wasn't great, but after 2 or 3 I'd got it sorted. Bigger logs are easier, and the key, as always, is to remember than you can always cut some more wood off, but you can't put any back on! ;-) I learned it while chainsaw training - the accuracy to make a good stool was useful for accurate tree felling.

Have fun! I found by the third one I'd got the hang of it. Once I had an order for 30, at £20 each. I found I could make two an hour, allowing for sharpening the chain every other stool. I got good at it, but it also became boring... I enjoy just making one or two at a time now.

I have designed more stools out of hard rock maple here in Nova Scotia, Canada. They all crack, but I am working on a design for a butterfly wedge to lock the cracks from growing. The logs that I use are from 200 +/- year old trees harvested locally. I have given some to friends, and my designs have evolved to where I use a squaring tool and bevel gauge. Many people cannot tell that it wasn't purchased.

Cheers! :-) It's good fun, isn't it? I'm making some out of seasoned Ash this year, will be interesting to see if it is more resistant to splitting than Sweet Chestnut, though it probably won't be as durable for outdoor use.
@mikepepler
@mikepepler 11 жыл бұрын
How long they last depends on the wood. Sweet Chestnut is prone to splitting but even that lasts several years. When it does go, it's usually either half way along a leg, or a split across the top of the stool. But you can make it more chunky or use a better wood - though not all are durable outdoors.

@mikepepler
@mikepepler 12 жыл бұрын
@STREETRAT211 You could do them straight, but it'd be quite hard to cut them out where they meet the seat. Doing them splayed means the saw cuts meet, and you can lift out a wedge of wood.

Not while I'm cutting it, but Sweet Chestnut tends to split as it dries, so sometimes bits of the top of the stool split off over the next year or two. If you use a wood less prone to splitting this wouldn't be a problem.

@mikepepler
@mikepepler 12 жыл бұрын
Yes, I found some types of wood tend to split when made into these stools. Chestnut is my main material, but after 2-3 years it does split. Ash is better, but not as durable.

@wheelori814 True, it could have been used a stool already! But it would have been heavy... To be honest though, these stools get used more upside-down as a saw bench then for sitting on, though we've sold a few as stools to people. Mike

That is a kickass, manly, rugged, multipurpose stool! Do all those sharp edges and corners coming together so closely make weak points? It looks like the legs would snap right off when the wood dries out :(
@mikepepler
@mikepepler Жыл бұрын
They eventually fail in one of two ways. 1. the seat splits 2. a knot in a leg weakens it. The splitting wouldn't be so bad if they weren't sweet chestnut, but I'm using that because it's durable outdoors.

@mikepepler Yes it is! : ) Let me know if there's some difference with Ash. I was using seasoned 'carpinus betulus', (don't know the name in english) and not even a little crack or split. With one I was using teakoil, ended up pretty sweet! /Nic.
