Part 13: • Chaka Khan: Whitney Ho...
Part 11: • Chaka Khan on Her & Ar...
Part 1: • Chaka Khan on Growing ...
--------
In this clip, Chaka Khan starts out by revealing her full name, which was given to her in Africa. She then detailed how she gave Kanye permission to use her song "Through the Fire" on his breakout single "Through the Wire." Chaka revealed that her son was friends with Kanye at the time, and he told Chaka that Kanye listened to her song a lot while he was in the hospital recovering from a car accident that led to his jaw being wired shut. Chaka explained that she was touched by the story, and she thought that he coudn't mess up the chorus, but Chaka felt that the speeding up of her voice on Kanye's song is an insult. She then stated htat she's done with both Kanye and "Through the Fire," which you can hear more about above.

Someone said in the comments of this video “She thinks our generation was wack” And someone commented “Well.” Never forget, we ALL were younger at one point, and the generation prior felt the same way about us. Hip Hop is an expression of how we feel. Each generations direction will constantly change the sound, but you will always be able to find something you like because of how diverse we are. There’s nothing that can be done to stop that, but you can find your community, and forever enjoy it. Cuz its only going to get bigger and bigger, and new communities will always be created.

@davidmatlock5075 3 жыл бұрын
@@ksager123 It absolutely is. She can't naturally roll off the low end frequencies of her voice, cut the frequencies necessary to make the vocal cut through, the speed at which the tape(ADAT) plays back the vocal after capturing is not the same as how she performed it, she can't create the effect of her being in a space like the reverb does. Then there is the process of mastering the recording which again changes the dynamics and overall sound of the vocal performance. If Kanye did what Eric Sermon did on the song "Just Like Music" where he has the isolated vocal tracks of Marvin Gaye I could see it being about the vocal but ultimately the purpose of using that sample was to draw the parallel of Kanye going through the accident to going through the fire. Musicians are not as special as we think we are and it's not a hit unless the fans tell us it is.

As a life-long hip-hop head, I get a kick outta older people that don't understand sampling. I remember trying to explain what was happening in "Gold Digger" to my grandpa years back as a teenager. The video was playing and he was like "That boy not singin' that right!" lol As for Chaka, she has to understand that you can't make the sample match the BPM of the rest of the song without altering the pitch, so it (and "Overnight Celebrity") will have that "Chipmunk" sound. Kanye would have had to slow "Through the Wire" down drastically to keep the original pitch intact. Either that, or Chaka Khan would've needed to provide new vocals for the sped up version. When using an original sample, most programs/equipment DO allow you to keep the pitch, but the sound gets compressed. Doing this doesn't yield the best results if the BPM is too far away from the tempo of the new track. Whatever the case, both tracks are classics and she looks AMAZING for 67!

@@sanjayaiyar4351 Right, but if it’s too large of a jump in BPM (like in this case), the sound is compressed. It almost sounds like it’s being fast-forwarded. I think that’s why Ye decided against using time stretch in those older beats.

The person that “named her” doesnt have his facts straight…as a Zulu man myself I’ve been told stories about the great warrior for as long as I can remember. The man’s name was Shaka…not TCHAKA.🤦🏽‍♂️ and Shaka Zulu isn’t even west African, she clearly didn’t do her research

And to add…to my knowledge, there isn’t a female version of the name. Shaka in English means Shark…and it’s a good name for him as he was king of the Zulu kingdom

I was 7 when Ye dropped the song. He put me on to her simply by sampling, because my pops heard it and played the original for me. I hope she knows there is a whole generation of 20 something year olds that discovered her because of that song.

Dee 972 She did previously mention that she got paid for it though... which is fair enough. Her vocals were used. If Kanye used another singers voice, she would’ve got nothing.
